Early improvement as a predictor of remission and response in schizophrenia: Results from a naturalistic study

2009

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the predictive validity of early improvement in a naturalistic sample of inpatients and to identify the criterion that best defines early improvement.MethodsTwo hundred and forty-seven inpatients who fulfilled ICD-10 criteria for schizophrenia were assessed with the Positive And Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at admission and at biweekly intervals until discharge from hospital. Remission was defined according to the recently proposed consensus criteria, response as a reduction of at least 40% in the PANNS total score from admission to discharge.ResultsReceiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses showed that early improvement (reduction of the PANSS total sco…

Diagnosis of Influenza: Only a Problem of Coding?

2013

<b><i>Objective:</i></b> To evaluate the characteristics of hospital discharge diagnoses of influenza measured by using specific International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9 CM) codes. <b><i>Subjects and Methods:</i></b> The study was conducted for the 3 years 2007, 2008 and 2011. The database included (1) administrative and clinical data on Sicilian patients admitted to acute care hospitals and (2) data from the influenza virological surveillance of 10 European countries (FluNet database). All Sicilian patients diagnosed with at least 1 ICD-9 CM code for influenza (487.0, 487.1 and 487.9) were considere…

Assessment of functional outcomes in patients with head and neck cancer according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and …

2013

Background The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Set for Head and Neck Cancer (ICF-HNC) covers the typical spectrum of problems in functioning in head and neck cancer. This study is part of a multistep process to develop practical guidelines in Germany. The purpose of this study was to identify instruments for the assessment of functioning using the ICF-HNC as reference. Methods Four Delphi surveys with physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, and social workers were performed to identify which aspects of the ICF-HNC are being treated and which assessment tools are recommended for the assessment of functioning. Results Ninety-seven percent categorie…

Validity and reliability of the Migraine-Treatment Optimization Questionnaire.

2009

Our aim was to establish the validity and reliability of a patient-rated Migraine Treatment Optimization Questionnaire (M-TOQ in primary care. Patients who met International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edn criteria for migraine completed a 19-item questionnaire containing candidate items for the M-TOQ and three questionnaires designed to test convergent/construct validity [Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), Headache Impact Test (HIT)-6 and Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Scale (MSSQoL)]. A 15-item (M-TOQ15) and a five-item (M-TOQ-5) questionnaire were derived. Two hundred and fifty-three adult patients were recruited. Five treatment optimization domains were iden…

Long-term outcomes of short-term and long-term psychosomatic inpatient treatment and their predictors

2007

Abstract Objectives The Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the University Giessen, Germany, offers short-term (STT) and long-term inpatient therapy (LTT). Methods In a prospective, 3-year follow-up study, we examined therapeutic indication, short- and long-term results, outcome predictors, and the utilization of aftercare for both settings. Results STT patients were more frequently acutely ill, suffered from stronger symptomatic manifestations, and were more frequently employed. LTT patients had a greater rate of chronic psychosomatic disorders, personality disorders and somatic comorbidity. In both settings, distress strongly declined during inpatient therapy and remain…

The Calgary Depression Rating Scale for schizophrenia in a healthy control group: Psychometric properties and reference values

2005

Abstract Background Assessment of depression in schizophrenia is of great importance as depressive signs and symptoms and suicidality are highly prevalent in patients with schizophrenic disorders. The Calgary Depression Rating Scale (CDSS) is the standard assessment instrument for that purpose due to its proven reliability and validity. However, so far no reference values derived from an adequate healthy sample have been published. Methods The present study analyzed CDSS item scores and summary scores in 154 healthy subjects (49% female, mean age 32.8 ± 11.7 years) selected from studies as controls for schizophrenic patients. Results The total CDSS score was 2.6 ± 2.7 (range 0–12), about 1/…

Confirmation that the AKT1 (rs2494732) genotype influences the risk of psychosis in cannabis users.

2012

Background Cannabis use is associated with an increased risk of psychosis. One study has suggested that genetic variation in the AKT1 gene might influence this effect. Methods In a case-control study of 489 first-episode psychosis patients and 278 control subjects, we investigated the interaction between variation at the AKT1 rs2494732 single nucleotide polymorphism and cannabis use in increasing the risk of psychosis. Results The rs2494732 locus was not associated with an increased risk of a psychotic disorder, with lifetime cannabis use, or with frequency of use. We did, however, find that the effect of lifetime cannabis use on risk of psychosis was significantly influenced by the rs24947…

Patients' experiences of shoulder problems prior to and following intervention.

2011

Health can be viewed from several perspectives. It has been shown that impingement of the shoulder leads to functional inability and decreased life quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the complexity of the effect of shoulder problems and discern and describe what it entails to be a patient suffering from shoulder problems. The study delineated patients' situations prior to and following medical intervention. This study is qualitative, and the data were collected through focus group interviews. Interviews with 26 respondents aged 43-63 (mean age 53) were made in 2005-2007. The sample group consisted of patients with supraspinatus tendinitis receiving either conservative treatme…

Prediction of symptom remission in schizophrenia during inpatient treatment

2007

Standardized consensus criteria for remission in schizophrenia were recently proposed. The present study applied the symptom-severity component of these criteria to a sample of inpatients in order to determine the rates of remission during inpatient treatment and to explore predictors of remission.A total of 288 inpatients from a multi-centre follow-up programme who fulfilled ICD-10 criteria for schizophrenia were included in the present analyses. PANSS ratings at admission and at discharge from hospitalization were used to examine remission status. Clinical and sociodemographic variables at admission were tested for their ability to predict remission at discharge. In total, 55% of the sampl…

The histology of brain tumors for 67 331 children and 671 085 adults diagnosed in 60 countries during 2000-2014: a global, population-based study (CO…

2021

Abstract Background Global variations in survival for brain tumors are very wide when all histological types are considered together. Appraisal of international differences should be informed by the distribution of histology, but little is known beyond Europe and North America. Methods The source for the analysis was the CONCORD database, a program of global surveillance of cancer survival trends, which includes the tumor records of individual patients from more than 300 population-based cancer registries. We considered all patients aged 0-99 years who were diagnosed with a primary brain tumor during 2000-2014, whether malignant or nonmalignant. We presented the histology distribution of th…
