The influence of international ownership on the performance of microfinance institutions
2016
Master thesis Business Administration - University of Agder 2016 The microfinance industry is experiencing rapid growth and financing this growth is a legitimate concern. During the past decade, international commercial funding in the form of international equity and debt has played a remarkable role in this regard. Until now, microfinance research that focus on the performance implications of international funding of MFIs is inadequate even though microfinance literature is voluminous. Our study focuses on the presence of international shareholders in microfinance institutions. Using data from 148 Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in 51 countries, we empirically determine MFI characteristic…
Understanding Finnish education: science popularization and scholarly work as intertwined activities
2015
Moving to Finland two years ago had given new push to my work in many ways. I have been studying Hungarian educationfor about thirteen years and I have been addressing the general public with popularizing materials for nearly five years now. However, in Finland these activities become more complex than in my native country. Here, I wish to discuss how my research found larger and larger contexts in two steps: First, by starting to make my research available to wider audiences in Hungary, and second, by turning my focus to an international environment. I claim that these two types of recontextualization are not only beneficial for me as a researcher personally but also serve the researched c…

On the link between urban location and the involvement of knowledge intensive business services firms in collaboration networks
2013
Knowledge intensive business services firms can play a key role in modern economies by linking localized collaboration networks to global knowledge flows, and by actively serving in support of knowledge diffusion across institutional and sectoral divides. The extent to which they do is dependent on the markets, partners and human resources available locally. This paper uses the unique establishment-level innovation data available in Norway to investigate whether location in urban labour market regions influences the geographical scope of collaborative linkages maintained within and outside the realm of clients. It proceeds to consider whether the diversity of partner types used locally, dom…
Internationalization and democratization interconnected : the Swedish and Finnish parliaments debating membership in the League of Nations in 1920
2019
In the aftermath of the First World War, constitutions of European states were widely democratized and parliamentarized, and similar turns were expected in international relations as a consequence of the creation of the League of Nations. This comparative analysis of Swedish and Finnish parliamentary debates on the League membership focusing on conceptualizations of the national versus international demonstrates how democratization and internationalization merged discursively. This happened to a greater extent than in the British parliament or the First Assembly of the League. Such entanglements followed from the interconnectedness of constitutional and foreign policy questions during prece…
International opportunity recognition among small and medium-sized family firms
2011
Current research in the field of entrepreneurship emphasizes the importance of opportunity recognition as a key element in the entrepreneurial process. It has been recognized that network ties, activeness and alertness, and prior knowledge are related to how entrepreneurs recognize new opportunities. However, it is unclear how important these factors are when a firm explores opportunities for entry into a foreign market. In this exploratory case study, covering the international opportunity recognition of eight family-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we found that the firms in question mainly recognized international opportunities by establishing new formal ties rather than …
Policy is what happens while you’re busy doing something else: introduction to special issue on “language” indexing higher education policy
2016
Traditionally, language has had three functions in higher education. It has been seen as a medium of teaching; as a means of archiving knowledge in different text depositories like books and libraries; and as an object of theoretical study (Brumfit 2004, 164). Brumfit’s typology acknowledges the fact that language somehow crosses the everyday experience of everyone working, studying or otherwise engaged at universities—in other words, in knowledge production. In recent years, however, two major trends in higher education policies have challenged Brumfit’s classification and called for attention to language in a new way: internationalization and globalization policies on the one hand, and kn…
