L’occupation de l’Iraq. Le Conseil de sécurité, le droit de la guerre et le droit des peuples à disposer d’eux-mêmes

2004

By Resolutions No. 1483 and 1511 (2003), the Security Council authorized the occupying powers in Iraq to intervene in the political and economic affairs of the occupied territory beyond the limits provided for by international law of war. At the same time, this authorization restricts the right of the Iraqui peole to self- determination, considered in its external aspect. Thus, the problem arises whether it is within the Security Council's powers to adopt resolutions which restrict the enjoyment of rights protected by rules of jus cogens. Furthermore, because the occupying government interpreted these resolutions broadly, it may be asked whether this interpretation is lawful. From a close e…

Kayne's model of Case and Finnish nominal phrases

2008

The standard view concerning Case assignment or valuation is that Case is valued to determiner phrases (DPs) in syntax. Recently, Kayne has proposed an alternative model, in which Case is valued to lexical elements rather than to phrases. This article cites several facts from Finnish in support of this model. A detailed Kaynean model of Case is developed. According to this model, abstract Case is valued to lexical elements by the highest ranking c-commanding Case assigner when each phase (CP,vP) is sealed, where ranking is based on a particular Case Hierarchy and a simple notion of locality. Configurations in which Case is seemingly assigned under a spec–head relation are provided with an a…

El legado de las voces y los escritos: su valor como testimonio de la cultura escolar

2020

ABSTRACT The article analyzes the ways by which the voices and writings from the past, both those that have reached us as those that we still can obtain from living people, may contribute in a special way to the knowledge and interpretation of school culture from the past. We argue they make a very important and valuable historical and educational heritage, which must be saved and availed. The potentialities and values of these resources, "egodocuments", are indicated through it, and also their problems, as well as the limitations and cautions to be considerated by the researcher. Several aspects are reviewed and analyzed through the entire work: the “testimonies”' value as an object of int…

Inclusive Legal Positivism, Legal Interpretation, and Value-Judgments

2009

In this paper I put forward some arguments in defence of inclusive legal positivism. The general thesis that I defend is that inclusive positivism represents a more fruitful and interesting research program than that proposed by exclusive positivism. I introduce two arguments connected with legal interpretation in favour of my thesis. However, my opinion is that inclusive positivism does not sufficiently succeed in estranging itself from the more traditional legal positivist conceptions. This is the case, for instance, with regard to the value-freedom principle, which is commonly accepted by inclusive positivist scholars. In contrast with this approach, I try to show, in the concluding sect…

Piero Sraffa's lectures on the advanced theory of value 1928–31 and the rediscovery of the classical approach

2005

Abstract Sraffa's Lectures on the Advanced Theory of Value 1928–1931 and his two preparatory Notes of summer and November 1927 provide a wealth of material, up to now unpublished, for a reconstruction of the early stage of his inquiry into the cognate fields of pure economic theory and its history. The three manuscripts show that in the late 1920s Sraffa rejected the Marshallian constant-cost interpretation of classical economics, an interpretation to which he had adhered in his 1925 and 1926 papers. Moreover, in the Lectures, Sraffa presents for the first time his own interpretation of classical economics based on the concepts of surplus, physical real costs and asymmetric treatment of dis…

“Piero Sraffa: economic reality, the economist and economic theory. An interpretation”.

2007

We carry out a textual analysis of Sraffa's main published contributions to pure economics in order to elaborate a rational reconstruction of an aspect of Sraffa's implicit methodology which has not yet been duly investigated. We refer to the threefold relationship between ‘economic reality’, ‘the economist/observer’ and ‘economic theory’. We elucidate the constraints which, for Sraffa, should bind the economists' arbitrariness and we trace the elements of continuity and evolution from the 1925–6 critique of Marshallian economics to Production of Commodities.

Color superposition: a new modality for contrast echocardiography.

1987

To improve the estimation of endocardial borders in echocardiography, a technique has been developed to combine images from contrasted and noncontrasted echocardiograms of the same heart-phase using a color superposition mode. This method allows both experienced as well as less experienced examiners to define the endocardial borders more reproducibly and objectively. This is achieved by displaying tissue structures as gray level images while the ventricular cavity is marked selectively by the color display of the contrast material zone. Results of volume estimations of the left ventricle by different examiners using several imaging modes including color superposition display are presented.

Prediction of Molecular Volume and Surface of Alkanes by Molecular Topology.

2003

Molecular volume and molecular surface are expressed as a function of topological degree in alkane graphs. This allows not only a straightforward approach to calculate such physicochemical magnitudes but also an interpretation of the role of the local vertex invariant (LOVI) or valence degree, delta, as well as the connectivity indices in the prediction of physicochemical properties. The interpretation is based on the concept of molecular accessibility (as introduced by Estrada, J. Phys. Chem. A 2002, 106, 9085) for which precise mathematical definitions are provided.

To See More: A Model for Press Photograph Story Analysis

2013

AbstractThis article presents and evaluates an interdisciplinary model for press photograph story analysis. The research comprised two stages: (i) familiarizing study participants with the interpretation model and (ii) qualitative content analysis of the participants’ interpretations of samples of press photograph stories. The result is that the model could be used in the educational context to develop the skills of visual literacy among students. Although the study opens new directions in visual methodologies, the model requires further development.

What Are the Latest Fake News in Romanian Politics? An Automated Analysis Based on BERT Language Models

2021

Social media and news outlets facilitate information sharing, while the Web is flooded by information posted online on a daily basis. However, content may be differently transmitted from case to case, based on the authors’ intentions and vocabulary, to the extent that it generates completely opposite points of view. As such, fake news have become a global phenomenon, and recent events highlight a high impact of distorted or fake information, especially on the political side, when candidates’ discourses include tendentious statements that require careful validation before completely trusting the source. This paper proposes an automated analysis of political statements in Romanian by applying…
