Intellectual engagements of accounting academics: The ‘forecasted losses' intervention
2022
This paper explores the social and political potential of accounting scholarship, presenting and discussing an intellectual intervention challenging a legislative reform that significantly affected Spanish industrial relations. In this reform, an accounting artifact (forecasted losses) played an unexpected role and was misrepresented, prompting a sizeable number of scholars to sign two manifestos in 2010 and 2012 against the use of forecasted losses made by the new legislation. As promoters of this manifesto, we perform in this paper a collaborative autoethnography to reflect on the context, events, reactions, and significance of this intervention for both the academic and the industrial re…

IL VICERÉ E LA CITTÀ: INTERVENTI DI MARCO ANTONIO II COLONNA A PALERMO E A MESSINA TRA DECORO URBANO, MAGNIFICENZA CIVICA E PUBBLICA UTILITAS
2016
Gender, self-confidence, sports, and preferences for competition
2016
In the last years, research in economics has shown a gender gap in the willingness to compete with women shying away from competition more than men do. This gender difference in preferences towards competition has been considered a critical factor in explaining the small percentage of women found in top-level positions in business, science, or politics. Therefore, in order to improve women job prospects, research and policy interventions try to offer incentives for women to increase competitive behavior. However, other recent studies specifically point at men¿s competitive behavior as the responsible for some of the financial markets malfunctions, suggesting that an influx of talented women…
Online authority communication during an epidemic: A Finnish example
2011
Abstract Social media are creating new challenges for authority communications during crises, such as a pandemic. This study examined Finnish citizens’ opinions about authorities as crisis managers during the swine flu epidemic of 2009–2010 and examined the success of authority intervention to online discussion forums. Through a content analysis carried out at the discussion forums, the study showed that though authorities are highly trusted in general in Finland, this trust is not extended to the online environment. Online, civilians did not trust authorities and the protective actions taken. Moreover, the authorities’ intervention to the discussion forums aimed at correcting false informa…
Combining the COM-B Model and Habit Theory to Leverage Understanding of Adolescents’ Tooth-Brushing Behavior
2022
Although brushing teeth twice a day is not difficult, a surprisingly large proportion of adolescents do not behave accordingly. This paper brings together the COM-B model and the habit formation theory in order to create a basis for a more comprehensive, customer-oriented, theory-based understanding of the issue. A total of nine focus group interviews were conducted among adolescents to further understand underlying aspects and develop solutions. In findings, barriers related to adolescents tooth brushing behavior were identified in all areas of COM-B model. Especially the role of automatic motivation was highlighted as in mornings tooth brushing seemed not to have a stable place in daily r…
Minimal intervention in dentistry: Which is the best approach for silorane composite restoration repairs?
2021
Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:28:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-04-01 Background: This study aimed to evaluate surface treatments, adhesives and composites for repairing silorane based restorations. Material and Methods: One hundred and twenty truncated cones (2 mm smaller diameter and 4 mm larger diameter) made of silorane composite were divided in 12 groups according with the surface treatment (diamond bur and oxide aluminum abrasion), the adhesive (Adper Scothbond Multipurpose (3M ESPE), Ecusit (Voco) and Filtek P90 Adhesive (3M ESPE)). Each group was subdivided in two according with the composite used for repair (methacrylate and silorane). The rep…
Contributions of longitudinal studies to evolving definitions and knowledge of developmental dyscalculia
2013
Abstract In the last 20 years, longitudinal studies have demonstrated that it is important to attend to the stability of mathematical performance over time as a facet of dyscalculia, that the manifestation of mathematics difficulties changes with development, and that individual differences in cognitive profiles and learning trajectories observed in children with mathematics difficulties implicate differences between dyscalculic and non-dyscalculic subgroups. Intra-individual differences over time, and external factors related to children's learning environments, also contribute to performance trajectories; moreover, these factors may explain the inconsistent performance profiles observed a…
Towards the integration and development of a cross-European research netwerk and infrastructure : the DEterminants of Diet and Physical ACtivity (DED…
2014
To address major societal challenges and enhance cooperation in research across Europe, the European Commission has initiated and facilitated ‘joint programming’. Joint programming is a process by which Member States engage in defining, developing and implementing a common strategic research agenda, based on a shared vision of how to address major societal challenges that no Member State is capable of resolving independently. Setting up a Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) should also contribute to avoiding unnecessary overlap and repetition of research, and enable and enhance the development and use of standardised research methods, procedures and data management. The Determinants of Diet …
Career Adaptability Mediates the Effect of Trait Emotional Intelligence on Academic Engagement
2018
Abstract The present study tested the mediating role of career adaptability on the existing relation between trait emotional intelligence (EI) and academic engagement. The sample consisted of 590 Spanish university students with a mean age of 21.66 years. The results confirmed the positive relations of trait EI with career adaptability, as well as with academic engagement. A key finding concerns the confirmation of the mediating role of career adaptability on the relation between trait EI and academic engagement, supporting a model of total mediation. In confirming the existence of total mediation, this study makes a new and valuable contribution that allows for better and more precise clar…
