Explicit Oral Narrative Intervention for Students with Williams Syndrome

2018

Narrative skills play a crucial role in organizing experience, facilitating social interaction and building academic discourse and literacy. They are at the interface of cognitive, social, and linguistic abilities related to school engagement. Despite their relative strengths in social and grammatical skills, students with Williams syndrome (WS) do not show parallel cognitive and pragmatic performance in narrative generation tasks. The aim of the present study was to assess retelling of a TV cartoon tale and the effect of an individualized explicit instruction of the narrative structure. Participants included eight students with WS who attended different special education levels. Narratives…

Assessment and Intervention with Wii Fit in the Elderly

2015

Nowadays, the number of elderly people is constantly increasing, and the prospective is that this collective will continue to grow in the future. As aging is a process that implies many changes and consequences for the person, it is important to focus the research on the improvement of the quality of life of this increasing age group. Psychologists dedicate a great amount of time to design programs that improve the health of the elderly, and that includes gathering information and statistically analyze it to interpret and provide recommendations for an improved design. Expert systems are a good solution to reduce the amount of work that these professionals have to dedicate, automatizing tas…

Model of psychosocial intervention in organizations opposed to job stress: operational strategy

2009

The Impact of Working Memory Training on Children’s Cognitive and Noncognitive Skills

2020

Working memory capacity is thought to play an important role for a wide range of cognitive and noncognitive skills such as fluid intelligence, math, reading, the inhibition of pre-potent impulses or more general self-regulation abilities. Because these abilities substantially affect individuals' life trajectories in terms of health, education, and earnings, the question of whether working memory (WM) training can improve them is of considerable importance. However, whether WM training leads to improvements in these far-transfer skills is contested. Here, we examine the causal impact of WM training embedded in regular school teaching by a randomized educational intervention involving a sampl…

Intra-individual variability in task performance after cognitive training is associated with long-term outcomes in children

2020

AbstractThe benefits and mechanistic effects of working memory training in children are the subject of much research and debate. The cumulative evidence indicates that training can alter brain structure and function in the short term and have lasting effects on behaviour. We show that five weeks of working memory training led to greater activity in prefrontal and striatal brain regions, better accuracy, and reduced intra-individual variability in response times. The reduction in intra-individual variability can be explained by changes to the evidence accumulation rates and thresholds in a sequential sampling decision model. Critically, intra-individual variability was more closely associate…

Evaluation of the Effects of a Bullying at Work Intervention for Middle Managers.

2020

The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of a workplace bullying intervention based on the training of middle managers regarding bullying awareness, the consequences of bullying, strategies in conflict resolution and mediation/negotiation abilities. Overall, 142 randomly selected middle managers participated in the study. First, participants completed an information record and two scales assessing bullying strategies, role conflict and role ambiguity. The last two scales were completed again in a second phase three months after the intervention had finished. The intervention produced a decrease in the following bullying strategies: effects on self-expression and communication, effect…

Effects of school-based interventions on motivation towards physical activity in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

Introduction Assuming that motivation is the key to initiate and sustain beneficial health behaviors, the aim of this systematic review was to analyze the effects of school-based physical activity interventions on a variety of motivational outcomes towards PA in school-aged children and adolescents. Methods A comprehensive literature search was carried out in six electronic databases to identify randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental trials examining the effects of PA interventions implemented during the regular school day, e.g., during physical education lessons or lunch breaks. Primary outcomes of interest were students' motivation, basic psychological needs, goal orientation…

Plenary conference: Keys to successful physical activity during childhood

2014

Introduction Based on different theories of dynamic systems, children's development occurs through interaction between their genes, their physical and socio-emotional environment, and the amount and quality of earlier experiences. The amount of physical activity (PA) has been recognized as one very important mediator in supporting young children's physical growth and overall development. Moreover, PA has been shown to effect children's daily well-being and health [1] . Children are physically active through their play. When children engage in physically active play, they use their whole body with all their senses and large muscles. Through playing children learn to feel their body, recogniz…
