Human and organizational factors in European nuclear safety: A fifty-year perspective on insights, implementations, and ways forward

Abstract In this essay we investigate the “lessons learned” within the domain of human and organizational factors (HOF) from operating European nuclear power plants (NPPs) in a fifty-year perspective. Specifically, we consider learning processes at an industry level that aim at promoting human contributions to nuclear safety. This is done by bringing together two main perspectives: (1) a historical perspective on HOF-related institutional and research initiatives is presented by outlining the history of nuclear safety according to three major nuclear accidents, (2) an applied perspective is provided on how HOF are managed in the field. The effect of culture on requirements: a value-based view of prioritization

This paper examines how culture affects requirements and their prioritization. We analyze the requirements of a mobile service, which were collected from Helsinki, Hong Kong, and Las Vegas. We argue that the current prioritization techniques for requirements do not sufficiently account for the cultural effects, nor does the literature offer information on ways of prioritizing such requirements according to users’ values. We see this as problematic because the literature suggests that culture should be viewed as a set of values. An Interview with the Brother, Micheál Ó Nualláin

This interview with Micheál Ó Nualláin, Brian O’Nolan’s brother and the only surviving member of his generation of the family, was conducted on 10 June 2014 in Monkstown, County Dublin. Its purpose was to obtain information about Brian O’Nolan’s private library at the John J. Burns Library, Boston College; the archive being the focal point of this issue of The Parish Review. It was Micheál who sold the last of his brother’s effects to Boston College in May 1997 and therefore he is in a position to answer questions about the purchase of the library, its contents and their provenance, and the reading practices of Brian and Evelyn O’Nolan.To read the article, click Download or View PDF.

La atenuación de los marcadores de control de contacto en PRESEEA: un estudio comparativo entre España y México

En el presente trabajo se estudia el valor atenuante de los marcadores conversacionales de control de contacto en el corpus de entrevistas PRESEEA en dos ciudades de España (Valencia y Madrid) y dos de México (Monterrey y México D. F.). A partir de la inclusión de las intervenciones tanto del entrevistador como del entrevistado, se observan una serie de tendencias que resultan comunes en estas dos variedades geográficas. Effects of authority: voicescapes in children's beliefs about the learning of English

This paper examines learner beliefs from a dialogical point of view. Drawing on the writings of the Bakhtin circle, it sees beliefs as shared and recycled viewpoints that are multivoiced: they echo the voices of others as well as the voice of the speaker. A longitudinal interview study was conducted among a group of young Finnish learners of English. The analysis of the data focused on the voicework present in the learners' answers: how they, on the one hand, echoed or even repeated the voices of authority, and, on the other hand, brought forward their own insights. Two ways of spilling drink : The construction of offences as ‘accidental’ in police interviews with suspects

This article explores the construction of offences as ‘accidental’ in police-suspect interactions. The data comprise audio-recorded investigative interviews, which were analysed using conversation analysis. In these interviews, suspects often do not explicitly state the nature of their defence when answering police officers’ questions; instead, suspects’ defensive practices or techniques are embedded in the narrative accounts they give of what happened, thus exhibiting rather claiming their ‘innocence’. espanolEste trabajo explora la creciente conversacionalizacion de los discursos mediaticos a partir de un analisis contrastivo del genero entrevista frente a dos generos vecinos: la conversacion coloquial y la entrevista sociolinguistica. Para ello, en primer lugar, se comparan los patrones interaccionales de los tres generos mediante una herramienta de visualizacion.
