Screening for Bacillus thuringiensis Crystal Proteins Active against the Cabbage Looper, Trichoplusia ni

Abstract Toxicity tests were performed to find among Cry1 and Cry2 Bacillus thuringiensis crystal proteins those with high activity against the cabbage looper. Tests were performed with neonate larvae on surface-contaminated artificial diet. The crystal proteins found to be toxic were, from higher to lower toxicity: Cry1Ac, Cry1Ab, Cry1C, Cry2Aa, Cry1J, and Cry1F (LC50 of 1.1–4.1, 3.4–4.4, 12, 34, 87, and 250 ng/cm2, respectively). Cry1B, Cry1D, and Cry1E can be considered nontoxic (LC50 higher than 2500 ng/cm2). In and out: crystal engineering for reversible iodine uptake

In this issue of Acta Crystallographica Section B, Moghzi et al. (2020) report the chemical design of a metal-organic compound with an outstanding iodine (I2) sorption capability. Sequestration of I2, an extremely volatile gas, has important applications in terms of controlling radioactive gases, as various radionuclides of I2 are released during the fission of nuclear fuels. Thus, the preparation of porous materials that can efficiently capture and store I2 is of importance not only from an academic point of view, but also for real-life applications.

Prekallikrein, a glycoprotein involved in contact phase activation, circulates in plasma in the form of a binary complex with high molecular weight kininogen (H-kininogen). The binding to H-kininogen is mediated by the prekallikrein heavy chain consisting of four repetitive domains, A1-A4. To define more precisely the region(s) involved in kininogen binding, we have employed an affinity cross-linking strategy with a synthetic peptide of 31 residues which mimics the prekallikrein binding site of H-kininogen. Abstract Background Pleural angiosarcoma is a rare tumor that causes diffuse pleural thickening and effusion, mimicking mesothelioma. Immunohistochemistry is needed to highlight endothelial differentiation. We describe the first case of pleural angiosarcoma with lymphatic differentiation following radiometabolic therapy for thyroid carcinoma. Biochemical properties of MHC class II molecules endogenously synthesized and expressed by mouse Langerhans cells

The cell surface expression and biosynthesis of Langerhans cells (LC)-derived major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules from epidermal cells (EC) prepared freshly and cultured for up to 3 days was investigated. Based on the constitutive expression of MHC class II determinants by LC, a panning and magnetic bead selection procedure was employed, yielding 65% and 86% of I-A+ cells, respectively. Phenotypical and cytochemical examinations revealed that the two LC preparations were free of contaminating macrophages as well as B and T cells. Intraoperative localization of malignant pheochromocytoma by 123-i-metaiodobenzylguanidine single probe measurement

Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging is a well-established method for locating intra- and extraadrenal pheochromocytomas. We investigated whether preoperative injection of 123-I-MIBG might be useful for intraoperative staging of chromaffine tumor cells. This was performed in a 46-year-old patient in whom the diagnosis of a malignant pheochromocytoma had been established by 123-I-MIBG imaging and enhanced catecholamine secretion.
