Evaluating evaluative bibliometrics: a case study of two research groups

2018

Bibliometrics is a method increasingly used to perform evaluations of scientific output and impact, in particular in order to distribute means, such as research grants. But also internally within universities and other research institutions. Various performance and impact meaures are used to establish quality of research. This can be highly problematic, not only in terms of ethics, but also with regards to method. Especially considering the proliferation of tools to perform bibliometric analysis, which means that analyses are increasingly performed without actual understanding of bibliometrics as a scientific method. In our research we have compared two research groups in the same field of …

Into the wild of long non-coding RNA in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) to explore new prognostic/predictive biomarkers

2015

Background: Long Non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) are emerging as essential regulators of genetic and epigenetic networks, and their deregulation may underlie complex diseases, such as carcinogenesis. Several studies have described lncRNAs alterations in patients with solid tumors. In particular, in Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST), upregulation of HOTAIR has been associated with aggressiveness, metastasis, and poor patients’ survival. In order to gain more detailed insight on the molecular role of lncRNAs in GIST, we analyzed in vivo the expression levels of lncRNAs H19 and MALAT1 in surgically resected patients. Material and Methods: The expression of the lnc-RNAs H19 and MALAT1 was evaluat…

Unraveling the three faces of self-esteem: A new information-processing sociometer perspective

2009

Abstract Based on an integration of sociometer theory and information-processing models, the present study investigated the predictive validity of three self-esteem measures: self-report, an implicit association test, and an affective priming task. In a first session, self-esteem measures were obtained from 93 participants. After an interval of four weeks, interpersonal perception ratings were collected in small round-robin groups. Participants were requested to briefly introduce themselves to the group before evaluating one another and indicating how they expected to be evaluated by the others (metaperceptions). As hypothesized, all three self-esteem measures independently predicted the pe…

Automated detection of protein unfolding events in atomic force microscopy force curves

2016

Atomic force microscopy is not only a high-resolution imaging device but also a mechanical machine, which can be used either to indent or stretch (soft) biomaterials. Due to the statistical nature of such materials (i.e., hydrogels or polymers) hundreds of force-distance curves are required to describe their mechanical properties. In this manuscript, we present an automated system for polymer unfolding detection based on continuous wavelet analysis. We have tested the automated program on elastin, which is an important protein that provides elasticity to tissues and organs. Our results show that elastin changes its mechanical behavior in the presence of electrolytes. In particular, we show …

Reactivity of Distibanes toward Trialkylalanes and -gallanes:  Syntheses and X-ray Structures of Bisadducts and Heterocycles

2001

Reactions between distibanes of the type Sb2R4 and trialkylalanes and -gallanes R‘3M in 1:2 stoichiometry yield eight bisadducts of the type [Sb2R4][MR‘3]2 (R = Me, R‘ = t-Bu, M = Al 1, Ga 2; R = Et, M = Al, R‘ = Me 3, Et 4, t-Bu 5; M = Ga, R‘ = Me 6, Et 7, t-Bu 8), which were characterized by multinuclear NMR studies and elemental analysis. In addition, 1, 2, 5, and 8 are the first structurally characterized neutral main group Lewis acid−distibane bisadducts. 1−8 are unstable in solution toward the formation of heterocycles of the type [R2SbMR‘2]x. [Me2SbGa(t-Bu)2]3 (9) and [Et2SbGa(t-Bu)2]2 (10) have been isolated and their solid state structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffrac…

Development of core-shell colloids to study self-diffusion in highly concentrated dispersions

2007

To study single particle motion in highly concentrated colloidal dispersions, a host-tracer colloid system was developed, consisting of crosslinked polymer micronetwork spheres placed in a good solvent. The host colloid is made invisible to the experimental probe by matching its refractive index to that of the solvent. For the tracer particles a core-shell structure was chosen to ensure the interaction potential to be identical to that of the host particles. Therefore the shell was made of the same polymer as the host. The core differs in refractive index from the solvent and is therefore visible due to scattered light.

Comparison of Split-Window and Single-Channel Methods for Land Surface Temperature Retrieval from MODIS and AATSR Data

2008

In this study, two different methods for retrieving the Land Surface Temperature (LST) from Terra/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Envisat/Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data are compared against a database of ground measured LSTs. These are the split-window (SW) and the single-channel (SC) methods. The SW method expresses LST as a combination of the brightness temperatures in the 11 iquestm and 12 iquestm channels with coefficients that can have local or global validity, depending on the way they are obtained. SC methods are based on the atmospheric radiative transfer equation. To solve this equation, convenient atmospheric temperature and water v…

Automatic generation of emissivity maps on a European scale

2009

The remote sensing measurement of the land surface temperature from satellites provides an overview of this magnitude on a continuous and regular basis. The study of its evolution in time and space is a critical factor in many scientific fields such as weather forecasting, detection of forest fires, climate change, and so on. The main problem of making this measurement from satellite data is the need to correct the effects of the atmosphere and the surface emissivity. In this work, these corrections have been made using a split-window algorithm. The aim was to define an enhanced vegetation cover method and develop a system that used it, in order to automatically generate maps of land surfac…
