Synthesis and characterization of catalytic iridium nanoparticles in imidazolium ionic liquids

Abstract The reduction of [Ir(cod)Cl]2 (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) dissolved in 1-n-butyl-3-methyl tetrafluoroborate, hexafluorophosphate and trifluoromethane sulphonate ionic liquids in the presence of 1-decene by molecular hydrogen produces Ir(0) nanoparticles. The formation of these nanoparticles follows the two-step [A → B, A + B → 2B ( k 1 , k 2 )] autocatalytic mechanism. The same mean diameter values of around 2–3 nm were estimated from in situ TEM and SAXS analyses of the Ir(0) nanoparticles dispersed in the ionic liquids and by XRD of the isolated material. Binary Mixtures of Ionic Liquids: A Joint Approach to Investigate their Properties and Catalytic Ability

The growing interest in the properties and applications of ionic liquids has recently led to research into the possibility of using their binary mixtures. This work reports on the effects of binary mixtures of ionic liquids on the outcome of organic reactions such as the mononuclear rearrangement of heterocycles and the solvatochromic behavior of Nile Red. Binary mixtures formed by ionic liquids differing in the structure of the cation and the anion are taken into account. The role of the dual nature of ionic liquids in the reversed-phase liquid chromatographic separation of basic drugs.

The cationic nature of basic drugs gives rise to broad asymmetrical chromatographic peaks with conventional C18 columns and hydro-organic mixtures, due to the ionic interaction of the positively charged solutes with the free silanol groups on the alkyl-bonded reversed-phase packing. Ionic liquids (ILs) have recently attracted some attention to reduce this undesirable silanol activity. Abstract Densities, speeds of sound, viscosities and refractive indices of two binary systems 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmim][BF4] + methanol and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [emim][BF4] + methanol, as well as of all pure components, have been measured covering the whole range of compositions at T = (278.15 to 318.15) K and p = 101 kPa. The first continuous, biphasic, Pd-catalysed dimerisation of methylacrylate is described. The biphasic system has been realised by using a tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid as catalyst medium and an ammoniumphosphine ligand to immobilise and stabilise the Pd-catalyst.

Abstract Eighteen new and three previously known but insufficiently characterized RR´3N+A− and R2R´2N+A− type (R = 2-ethoxyethyl or 4-methoxybenzyl, R´ = methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-pentyl or n-hexyl, A = Br, BF4 or PF6) quaternary ammonium (QA) salts were synthesized and characterized by using 1H and 13C NMR techniques, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. A new series of fluorinated salts, iodides and trifluoromethanesulfonates, was synthesized from perfluoroalkylated 1,2,4-oxadiazolylpyridines. Their thermotropic properties were investigated by combined temperature resolved small angle and wide angle X-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry and polarised optical microscopy. The UV–visible and photoluminescence properties were studied for all compounds. The results showed for two compounds the existence of an enantiotropic mesomorphic smectic liquid crystal phase. All iodides showed thermochromism phenomena suggesting prospective applications in optoelectronics.
