The micellization of ionic amphiphilic diblock copolymers, polyisobutylene-block-poly(methacrylic acid) (PIB-b-PMAA), with a constant degree of polymerization of the non-ionic block ðDPn ¼ 20Þ and various degrees of polymerization of the polyelectrolyte block ðDPn ¼ 100 – 425Þ was examined in aqueous media by means of fluorescence spectroscopy using pyrene as a polarity probe. The molar values of the critical micellization concentration (cmc) were found to be around 2 £ 10 26 mol/l, being nearly independent of the length of the polyelectrolyte block as well as pH (in the range 6 – 9) and ionic strength (# 0.5 M NaCl) while the specific cmc values varied from 20 to 100 mg/l. Drug release from calcium and zinc pectinate beads: Impact of dissolution medium composition

The aim of this study was to investigate drug release from calcium and zinc pectinate beads and to understand the impact of medium electrolytes during drug transfer. A potential drug carrier for colonic drug delivery (rutin) was prepared with calcium and zinc pectinate beads and was tested in three different simulated intestinal fluids (pH 7.3) with phosphates (Sorensen’s and Mc Ilvaine’s buffers) and without phosphates (Tris-buffer). Thermodynamics of Proton Binding of Halloysite Nanotubes

In this paper, new information on physical and chemical properties of the widely used nanostructured Halloysite mineral are reported. Given that the Halloysite has a tubular structure formed by a variable number of wrapped layers containing Si-OH and Al-OH groups, their proton binding affinity was measured at different ionic strengths and ionic media by means of potentiometric measurements in heterogeneous phase. One protonation constant for the Si-OH groups and two for the Al-OH groups were determined. The protonation constant values increase with increasing of the ionic strength in all the ionic media. Zr, Hf and REE distribution in river water under different ionic strength conditions

International audience; The Platani River flowing in south-central Sicily, interacting with evaporite rocks, generates a wide range of ionic strength in the water catchment from 0.1 to 5.0 mol kg−1. A model of synthetic saliva (SALMO, SALiva MOdel) is proposed for its use as standard medium inin vitroequilibrium and speciation studies of real saliva. The concentrations come out from the literature analysis of the composition of both real saliva and synthetic saliva. Abstract In this paper, potentiometry and calorimetry were used to determine the thermodynamics of interaction between risedronate and four bivalent metal cations, namely: Mg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ in aqueous NaCl solutions at different ionic strengths and at T = 298.15 K. The data analysis allowed us to ascertain that the main species formed were the MLH2, MLH, ML and M2L; however scarcely soluble species precipitated at acidic pH values, between 4 and 7 depending on the metal cation involved, probably due to the formation of the neutral M2L(s) species. Ion-exchange fibers and drugs: an equilibrium study

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of drug binding into and drug release from cation-exchange fibers in vitro under equilibrium conditions. Ion-exchange groups of the fibers were weakly drug binding carboxylic acid groups (-COOH), strongly drug binding sulphonic acid groups (-SO(3)H), or combinations thereof. Fine-Tuning of the film thickness of ultrathin multilayer films composed of consecutively alternating layers of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes

We have recently introduced a new method of creating ultrathin films [1–3] based on the electrostatic attraction between opposite charges. Consecutively, alternating adsorption of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes leads to the formation of multilayer assemblies. Multilayer buildup is easily monitored by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). Isolation of human milk whey proteins by solid phase extraction with a polymeric material modified with gold nanoparticles

Abstract This work describes a method for the isolation of human milk whey proteins by solid-phase extraction (SPE) with a polymeric material modified with gold nanoparticles. Human serum albumin, α-lactalbumin, lactoferrin and lysozyme were selected as target proteins to establish the performance of SPE support. Several experimental variables (pH and ionic strength) that affect the SPE protocol were investigated to achieve the maximum extraction efficiency. Under optimal conditions, the SPE sorbent gave excellent recoveries, and offered a high permeability and reusability (> 20 times).
