Circular dichroism of polynucleotides: Interactions of NiCl2 with poly(dA-dT).poly(dA-dT) and poly(dG-dC).poly(dG-dC) in a water-in-oil microemulsion.

2008

The thermal behavior of the synthetic, high molecular weight, double stranded polynucleotides poly(dA-dT)·poly(dA-dT) [polyAT] and poly(dG-dC)·poly(dG-dC) [polyGC] solubilized in the aqueous core of the quaternary water-in-oil cationic microemulsion CTAB|n-pentanol|n-hexane|water in the presence of increasing amounts of NiCl2 at several constant ionic strength values (NaCl) has been studied by means of circular dichroism and electronic absorption spectroscopies. In the microemulsive medium, both polynucleotides show temperature-induced modifications that markedly vary with both Ni(II) concentration and ionic strength. An increase of temperature causes denaturation of the polyAT duplex at lo…

Supramolecular polymerization of sulfated dendritic peptide amphiphiles into multivalent L-selectin binders

2021

The synthesis of a sulfate-modified dendritic peptide amphiphile and its self-assembly into one-dimensional rod-like architectures in aqueous medium is reported. The influence of the ionic strength on the supramolecular polymerization was probed via circular dichroism spectroscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. Physiological salt concentrations efficiently screen the charges of the dendritic building block equipped with eight sulfate groups and trigger the formation of rigid supramolecular polymers. Since multivalent sulfated supramolecular structures mimic naturally occurring L-selectin ligands, the corresponding affinity was evaluated using a competitive SPR binding assay…

Systematic Approach for Calculating the Concentrations of Chemical Species in Multiequilibrium Problems: Inclusion of the Ionic Strength Effects

2012

A general systematic approach including ionic strength effects is proposed for the numerical calculation of concentrations of chemical species in multiequilibrium problems. This approach extends the versatility of the approach presented in a previous article and is applied using the Solver option of the Excel spreadsheet to solve real problems such as the calculation of the pH of buffer solutions at any ionic strength. It is useful for undergraduate programs, in post-graduate programs, and in professional laboratories to predict experimental conditions.

Ionic liquid-based single-drop microextraction followed by liquid chromatography-ultraviolet spectrophotometry detection to determine typical UV filt…

2009

Abstract A user-friendly and inexpensive ionic liquid-based single-drop microextraction (IL-SDME) procedure has been developed to preconcentrate trace amounts of six typical UV filters extensively used in cosmetic products (i.e., 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, isoamyl 4-methoxycinnamate, 3-(4′-methylbenzylidene)camphor, 2-ethylhexyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate and 2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate) from surface water samples prior to analysis by liquid chromatography-ultraviolet spectrophotometry detection (LC-UV). A two-stage multivariate optimization approach was developed by means of a Plackett–Burman design for screening and selecting the significa…

Determination of UV filters in both soluble and particulate fractions of seawaters by dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction followed by gas chroma…

2014

An analytical method to determine the total content (i.e., not only in the soluble fraction but also in the particulate one) of eight commonly used UV filters in seawater samples is presented for the first time. Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) is used as microextraction technique to pre-concentrate the target analytes before their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In order to release the UV filters from the suspended particles an ultrasound treatment is performed before DLLME. The ultrasound treatment time was studied in order to achieve a quantitative lixiviation of the target analytes. The type and volume of both disperser and extraction solve…

Sensitive determination of free benzophenone-3 in human urine samples based on an ionic liquid as extractant phase in single-drop microextraction pri…

2007

Abstract Benzophenone-3 (BZ3), one of the compounds most commonly used as UV filter in cosmetic products, can be absorbed through the skin into the human body, since it can be found at trace levels in urine from users of cosmetic products that contain BZ3. Moreover, different undesirable effects have been attributed to this compound. Thus, sensitive analytical methods to monitor urinary excretion of this compound should be developed. This paper presents a selective and sensitive methodology for BZ3 determination at ultratrace levels in human urine samples. The methodology is based on a novel microextraction technique, known as single-drop microextraction (SDME). An ionic liquid (IL) has bee…

Trace determination of volatile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in natural waters by magnetic ionic liquid-based stir bar dispersive liquid microext…

2017

In this work, a novel hybrid approach called stir bar dispersive liquid microextraction (SBDLME) that combines the advantages of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) has been employed for the accurate and sensitive determination of ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in natural water samples. The extraction is carried out using a neodymium stir bar magnetically coated with a magnetic ionic liquid (MIL) as extraction device, in such a way that the MIL is dispersed into the solution at high stirring rates. Once the stirring is ceased, the MIL is magnetically retrieved onto the stir bar, and subsequently subjected to thermal desorptio…

Polydopamine-coated magnetic nanoparticles for the determination of nitro musks in environmental water samples by stir bar sorptive-dispersive microe…

2021

Magnetic-based microextraction approaches have gained popularity in recent years due to the magnetic properties of the extraction phases allowing to handle them easier and more efficiently. This work describes a magnetic-based analytical method for the determination of the family of nitro musks in environmental water samples. These compounds have been of great concern due to their environmental impacts and potential health effects. The method is based on stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) as extraction approach, prior to thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (TD-GC-MS). For this purpose, polydopamine-coated cobalt ferrite magnetic nan…

A new method for the in situ determination of phospholipids after thin-layer separation

1973

Abstract A very sensitive method has been devised for the in situ determination of phospholipids after thin-layer chromatographic separation, which enabled us to investigate the phospholipid content of erythrocytes and ATPase preparations. The phospholipid compositions of the ATPase preparations and of the erythrocytes are different, and the relative phospholipid compositions of the Na,K-ATPase preparations are also different, which indicates that Na,K- and Ca-ATPase seem to be different with regard to their phospholipid composition. An increase in temperature during the preparation procedure yields a Ca-ATPase preparation (II), which exhibits different kinetic properties and a different ph…

The self-association equilibria of doxorubicin at high concentration and ionic strength characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dyna…

2019

Abstract The self-association equilibria of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DX), at high drug and NaCl concentrations, are studied by temperature scan fluorescence spectroscopy, with the support of molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. Even though all anthracyclines show dimerization equilibria, DX only can further associate into long polymeric chains according to DXmon ⇄ DXdim ⇄ DXpol. This is reflected not only in the mechanical properties of DXpol solutions (behaving as thixotropic gels) but also in their spectroscopic behaviour. Fluorescence, in particular, is the technique of election to study this complex set of equilibria. Upon increasing the temperature, DXpol melts into DXdim, which in …
