Protein transport through gold-coated, charged nanopores: Effects of applied voltage

The flux of bovine serum albumin and bovine hemoglobin through charged nanopores inside polymeric membranes is analysed as a function of the applied voltage to the nanopore surface, the solution ionic strength and pH. The electrostatic interaction of the protein with the nanopore surface gives low transport rates except at the protein isoelectric point and the minimum of the effective, voltage-induced nanopore charge. This electrostatic sieving effect allows for the separation of proteins with similar molecular weights.
Charge Transfer Transitions in Neutral and Ionic Polypeptides: A Theoretical Study

We report on the vertical electronic excitation spectra of neutral polypeptides and their radical ions. Model systems including tri-, tetra-, and octamers in an α-helix and β-sheet alike conformation are studied by various computational methods. The results allow us to assign the band centered at about 7.5 eV in the absoption spectra of proteins to charge transfer states. The calculations also support conclusions from recent experiments which propose charge transfer as a possible mechanism for photoinduced electron transfer in polypeptide cations.

Abstract Interaction of cationic host species, in particular Zn 2+ salts, with polyaza[n]paracyclophanes (i.e. 2,6,9,13-Tetraaza[14]paracyclophane, B323 (1a) ) directs their selective N-functionalization. In this way compounds mono- or difunctionalized with ArCH 2− groups at the benzylic nitrogen atoms can be easily obtained. Direct reaction with the alkylating agent, in the absence of the Zn 2+ species, produces, in general, very complex mixtures of mono- and polyalkylated compounds except when 4-picolyl chloride is used. The reaction of ethyl acetoacetate with meta-cresol in an acidic ionic liquid yielded a complex mixture of condensation products. 4,7-Dimethylcoumarin and the title compound, C20H22O3, were isolated. The title compound shows chemical but not crystallographic mirror symmetry. The two aromatic rings are inclined at an angle of 73.55 (6)°.

Abstract Monomethylmercury as one of the most toxic mercury species influences the health and development of higher organisms and tends to accumulate in the tissue of animals and humans. The aim of this study was to explore the mercury methylating capability of (1) intestinal microbiota of the soil-living earthworm Eisenia foetida (E. foetida) and (2) intestinal sulfate reducing-bacteria in pure cultures. The influence of hydrogen cations on kinetics and equilibria of sorption of copper cations by the marine alga Palmaria palmata (Linnaeus) Weber & Mohr was studied under static conditions. The competitive effect of the H+ cations is described, which influenced the uncertainty of evaluation of the alga sorption capacity. Under static conditions, the variation of the Cu2+/H+ concentration ratio during sorption was found nonmonotonic. The Langmuir isotherm model was used to determine the sorption capacity of the alga, namely 12.4 mg g−1 of dry algae mass. The effects of changes in the concentration of macronutrients on BA-induced caulogenesis from leaves of matureJuniperus oxycedrus cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog or Schenk and Hildebrandt media are reported. The bud-forming capacity of the explants depended mainly on the ratios among the levels of ammonium, nitrate, and potassium. The most favorable media formulations for differentiation of adventitious buds were those with nitrate:potassium, ammonium:potassium, and nitrate:ammonium ratios near 1, around 0.1, and between 9 and 15, respectively. The total ionic strength of the media limited bud induction, but only when a disequilibrium of these ratios was produced.

Abstract In reversed-phase liquid chromatography, the performance for basic compounds is affected by the interaction of the protonated (cationic) species with the anionic free silanols on the alkyl-bonded stationary phases. Using aqueous-organic mobile phases in the absence of additives, the retention may be too high, and the peaks be broad and asymmetric.
