Risk assessment of benzene in food samples of Iran's market

2018

Abstract The concentration of benzene in ninety-eight collected food and drink samples (carbonated beverage, fruit juice, pickle, lime juice, mayonnaise and salad dressing, 16 samples from each) from Iran local markets were investigated using gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Moreover, the correlation of benzene concentration with sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid concentrations was assessed. Benzene concentration in carbonated beverages, fruit juices, pickle, lime juices, mayonnaise and salad dressing were 3.57 ± 1.70, 5.17 ± 3.63, 4.37 ± 2.24, 4.99 ± 0.54, 1.38 ± 0.87 and 1.47 ± 0.83 μg/L, respectively, being in all cases below the acceptable limit (10 μ…

Global social identity and global cooperation

2011

This research examined the question of whether the psychology of social identity can motivate cooperation in the context of a global collective. Our data came from a multinational study of choice behavior in a multilevel public-goods dilemma conducted among samples drawn from the general populations of the United States, Italy, Russia, Argentina, South Africa, and Iran. Results demonstrate that an inclusive social identification with the world community is a meaningful psychological construct that plays a role in motivating cooperation that transcends parochial interests. Self-reported identification with the world as a whole predicts behavioral contributions to a global public good beyond …

Occupational exposure to metal-rich particulate matter modifies the expression of repair genes in foundry workers

2021

Foundry workers are exposed to numerous occupational health hazards, which may result in increased risk of cancer, respiratory disease, and other diseases. Oxidative stress is known to be involved in the pathogenesis of such diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the association between multiple occupational exposures in foundry workers and expression of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair genes as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage. The study sample comprised 17 foundry workers and 27 matched control subjects. Expression of 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase-1 (OGG1), inosine triphosphate pyrophosphate (ITPA), and MutT homolog 1 (MTH1) in peripheral blood was examined using the real-t…

Determinants of Refugee and Migrant Health Status in 10 European Countries: The Mig-HealthCare Project

2020

In this study, we collect and synthesize information on the health status of the refugee/migrant population in ten European countries in order to map refugee/migrant health needs. With this information, we identify areas of intervention and healthcare system strengthening to provide the basis for future health planning and effective healthcare provision to migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees in the European Union (EU). Methods: 1407 migrants in ten European Union countries (consortium members of the Mig-HealthCare project) were surveyed on general health, mental health, and specific diseases using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and multivariable linear r…

Maxillofacial fracture epidemiology and treatment plans in the Northeast of Iran: A retrospective study

2017

Background: The epidemiology of facial injuries varies based on lifestyle, cultural background and socioeconomic status in different countries and geographic zones. This study evaluated the epidemiology of maxillofacial fractures and treatment plans in hospitalized patients in Northeast of Iran (2015-2016). Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the medical records of 502 hospitalized patients were evaluated in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery in Kamyab Hospital in Mashhad, Iran. The type and cause of fractures and treatment plans were recorded in a checklist. Data were analyzed with Mann–Whitney test, chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test, using SPSS 21. Results: The …

Retrospective study maxillofacial fractures epidemiology and treatment plans in Southeast of Iran

2015

Background: The epidemiology of facial injuries varies in different countries and geographic zones. Population concentration, lifestyle, cultural background, and socioeconomic status can affect the prevalence of maxillofacial injuries. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the maxillofacial fractures epidemiology and treatment plans in hospitalized patients (2012-2014) which would be useful for better policy making strategies. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the medical records of 386 hospitalized patients were evaluated from the department of maxillofacial surgery at Bahonar Hospital of Kerman, Iran. The type and cause of fractures and treatment plans were recorded in a…

Polymorphism of C'3 in German, Bulgarian, Iranian and Angola population

1973

Using agarose gel electrophoresis, C'3 was typed in 4 populations. The gene frequencies of the common allele C'3S in these 4 populations were Germans (0.8071), Bulgarians (0.8149), Iranians (0.7920) and Angola (0.9532). The results are discussed.

Chronic occupational noise exposure: Effects on DNA damage, blood pressure, and serum biochemistry

2019

Abstract Noise levels experienced by industrial workers may cause both auditory and non-auditory harmful effects. We have studied the effects of chronic industrial noise exposure on DNA damage, blood pressure, and serum biochemistry in factory workers. Male workers (109 individuals) in three parts of a food factory in Shahroud, Iran were enrolled as the exposed group and male office workers (123 individuals) were the unexposed control group. Noise exposure was measured (dosimetry) and the comet assay was used to evaluate DNA damage in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and ceruloplasmin (Cp) levels were measured in serum samples. GPx levels, systolic and diasto…
