This chapter discusses migrant labour market integration policies and services in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Finland, Italy, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and thus we present a wide variety of different national contexts. In addition, it also details EU-specific policies and programmes. The empirical work underpinning this chapter emanates from two main research tasks: policy discourse analysis; and assessment of existing policies and their outcomes. David Hoffman tutki väitöstyössään suomalaisessa korkeakoulujärjestelmässä työskentelevien akateemisten siirtolaisten näkökulmia ja kokemuksia. Tutkimus toi esiin tärkeitä haasteita liittyen suomalaisen väestön nopeaan ikääntymiseen ja kansainväliseen muuttoliikkeeseen. Hoffmanin analyysi tunnisti tieteenaloja, joilla akateeminen liikkuvuus on vahvaa sekä aloja, joilla se on lähes olematonta. Lisäksi tutkimus osoittaa, että akateeminen liikkuvuus toimii hyvin joidenkin siirtolaisryhmien kohdalla, kun taas toisia siirtolaisryhmiä ei juuri löydy henkilöstölistoilta. ‘I’m a foreign teacher’: legitimate positionings in the stories of a migrant teacher

This qualitative study examines one migrant teacher’s identity positions in the context of a peer mentoring group setting in Finland. Combining theories of legitimacy and teacher narratives, this study asked which positions were available and legitimate for a migrant teacher. The analysis of three of the stories the teacher (‘Ji Yoo’) shared was inspired by Barkhuizen’s three-step framework for examining positioning in teacher narratives. Findings showed that Ji Yoo’s most legitimate positions were being ‘foreign’, novice teacher, cultural broker, and expert teacher, the latter two being the least frequent and least explicit ones. Motivaation yhteys luku- ja kirjoitustaitoon venäjää kotikielenään puhuvilla peruskoululaisilla

Motivaatiota on aiemmin tutkittu laajasti ja tiedetään, että sillä on merkitystä toisen ja vieraan kielen oppimisessa (Dörnyei 1994, 273). Kuitenkin maahanmuuttajien motivaatiota kotikieltään kohtaan on tutkittu melko vähän. Raportoimme tässä artikkelissa yhden pro gradu -tutkielman (Perikangas 2015) tuloksia. Tutkielmassa selvitettiin venäläistaustaisten koululaisten motivaatiota kotikieltään venäjää kohtaan sekä sitä, millainen yhteys motivaatiolla on venäjän kielen luku- ja kirjoitustaitoon. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin sitä, mitkä taustatekijät mahdollisesti ovat yhteydessä oppilaiden motivaatioon. nonPeerReviewed
Finns and the Indigenous People in the Great Lakes Region: Playing with Settler Myths in Late 20th- and Early 21st-Century Finnish American Fiction

This chapter explores the Finnish settler migration mythology through a selection of Finnish–American literature produced in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The idea is to shed light on the ways in which these texts create, spread, and perpetuate the settler myths. A close reading of literary texts can offer the opportunity to refocus, reframe, and reconceptualize Finnish experiences in North America. The chapter demonstrates that these texts can be approached as reinforcing the Finnish–Indigenous myth.
