Do good working conditions make you work longer? Analyzing retirement decisions using linked survey and register data
2020
We analyzed the role of adverse working conditions and new management practices in the determination of employees’ retirement behavior. The combined data contain both comprehensive information on perceived job disamenities, job satisfaction, and intentions to retire from two nationally representative cross-sectional surveys and information on employees’ actual retirement decisions from longitudinal register data that can be linked to the surveys. Using a trivariate ordered probit model, we find that job dissatisfaction arising from adverse working conditions is significantly related to intentions to retire and that this, in turn, is related to actual retirement during an extensive follow-up…
Is fatherhood allowed? : Media discourses of fatherhood in organizational life
2019
It has been claimed that in the context of organizations and management, fathers are invisible. One source of tension for fathers who work and who want to participate in family life is that even though involved fatherhood is emerging in many western societies, a family-oriented male identity is likely to be problematic for men in organizations. This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of a professional and managerial men's work-family relationship using discourse analysis on data from three different media sources in Finland, published during 1990-2015. We identified two competing discourses: one of stasis, the other of change. The stasis discourse is constructed around tra…
Collaborative Leadership in the Institution of Higher Education: A Sociocultural Context of Pakistan
2023
The need for collaborative leadership to advance knowledge sharing, novel ideas, inclusion and employee engagement has increased in modern organizations, with the aim being to make organizations more effective and responsible. Yet, an interesting question arises about how this kind of leadership model, which is arguably of Western origin, is understood and whether it can be applied in sociocultural contexts where top-down leadership tends to be exercised. This study addresses this question and explores the meaning of collaborative leadership from a cultural viewpoint in Pakistan, where collaborative relationships across hierarchical levels are not common. The applicability of collaborative…
Towards a routine-based view of interfirm rivalry
2022
Although organizational routines have attracted increasing attention in strategy and organization research, they have received surprisingly limited attention in competitive dynamics scholarship. Our essay seeks to advance a routine-based view of interfirm rivalry by bridging the competitive dynamics and routine literatures. We put forward a conceptual model of the routine-based view of interfirm rivalry that is centered on “competitive action routines.” The model clarifies the roles that managers play in driving a firm’s competitive behavior, challenges the assumption of routine-based rigidity in competitive behavior, and adds nuance to our understanding of managerial cognition in competiti…
The dynamic interaction between internal and external pressures for MNCs’ HR management practices: The case of Lidl Finland
2014
In this paper we build on the debates on cross-national transfer of management practices in MNCs, and especially examine how internal and external institutional pressures shape the way MNCs’ HRM practices evolve upon new market entry. In our longitudinal case study we examine the evolution of multinational hard discounter Lidl’s labour relations in Finland between 2002-2012. We show how Lidl Finland’s entry to Finnish markets was labelled by constant struggles between cross-border standardization and local adaptation of labour practices. We identify several tactics employed by Lidl management in order to weaken the effects of institutional pressures. Our analysis emphasises the dynamic inte…
