The Literary Construction of Journalism Education: A Review of the Course Literature in the Nordic Academic Journalism Programmes
2019
This article investigates the course literature in the curricula of 12 major journalism schools at Northern European universities. This analysis of the course literature listed in documentation of bachelor programmes traces how journalism education institutions constitute their knowledge base on journalism. It is found that Nordic journalism students are required to read almost four books per study credit on average. Undergraduate academic journalism programmes are professionally oriented, and professional literature by non-scientific publishers occupies a major place in the course literature. A strong emphasis is placed on professional books written in the domestic language, with an averag…
Enhancing visual literacy through interpretation of photo-genres: toward a genre typology of journalistic photographs
2016
ABSTRACTAlthough genre is one of the most extensively employed concepts in various disciplines, only a few attempts have been made to classify images in the press, providing either a palette of thematic categories similar to those of photography competitions or theory-based classifications, which often ignore certain types of photographs. In addition, no studies have suggested the genre typology as a tool for the interpretation of journalistic photographs. Based on a literature review and visual material analysis from the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, this study compiles a typology that sets out four photo-genres: news photography, reportage photography, portrait photography and illustrativ…
Subjectivity in Russian and American media: an interpersonal discursive perspective
2021

Når flukten blir digital : Filmen Your phone is now a refugee's phone analysert fra et medieteknisk, narratologisk og retorisk perspektiv
2017
Materialet i oppgaven er BBC Media Action sin film Your phone is now a refu…

Meaningful lines : Social semiotic investigations of the graphical line, used as a connector in digital data visualizations
2020
The paper III is not published yet. The dissertation investigates the graphical line, used as a connector in digital data visualizations (DVs), from a social semiotic perspective. It explores the semiotic functions of connecting lines in digital DVs, building empirically on two corpus analyses. These analyses are concerned with how two key semiotic functions are graphically realized in the selected lines and whether graphical conventions regulating these realizations can be identified. In the dissertation the connecting line is researched as a central element of several different DV types – line graphs, timelines, route maps, connection maps, network diagrams, etc. Today, DVs are used in a …
