Being Moved by Unfamiliar Sad Music Is Associated with High Empathy

The paradox of enjoying listening to music that evokes sadness is yet to be fully understood. Unlike prior studies that have explored potential explanations related to lyrics, memories, and mood regulation, we investigated the types of emotions induced by unfamiliar, instrumental sad music, and whether these responses are consistently associated with certain individual difference variables. The approximation of Banach space valued nonabsolutely integrable functions by step functions is studied. It is proved that a Henstock integrable function can be approximated by a sequence of step functions in the Alexiewicz norm, while a Henstock-Kurzweil-Pettis and a Denjoy-Khintchine-Pettis integrable function can be only scalarly approximate in the Alexiewicz norm by a sequence of step functions. In case of Henstock-Kurzweil-Pettis and Denjoy-Khintchine-Pettis integrals the full approximation can be done if and only if the range of the integral is norm relatively compact. We prove that several results of Talagrand proved for the Pettis integral hold true also for the Kurzweil--Henstock--Pettis integral. In particular the Kurzweil--Henstock--Pettis integrability can be characterized by suitable properties of the operators defined by the integrands and by cores of those functions.

BackgroundSelf-efficacy and enjoyment are two main constructs proposed within many motivational theories in any human endeavor, sport and physical activity included.MethodsThe purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of two pictorial scales measuring self-efficacy and enjoyment levels in a sample of 14,035 Italian schoolchildren (7,075 boys and 6,960 girls, 6- to 7-year-olds). An important feature of the two scales is that they are in a pictorial format in order to prompt a straightforward understanding in children. The recent surge of interest towards the paradoxical pleasure produced by sad music has generated a handful of theories and an array of empirical explorations on the topic. However, none of these have attempted to weigh the existing evidence in a systematic fashion. The present work puts forward an integrative framework laid out over three levels of explanation – biological, psycho-social, and cultural – to compare and integrate the existing findings in a meaningful way. Joy is one of the basic human feelings that express emotional, psychological, and spiritual state. Thus the biblical books and especially the Book of Psalms show various motifs of joy among numerous existential situations. Not only joy is the characteristic but its distinct reference to the relation with God as the One who is the source of joy even in the midst of worries and trials. It is exemplified by Psalm 126 which presents the motifs of joy included in the experience of sowing and harvesting. These motifs were raised accurately and meaningfully in the description of the situation of changing man’s lot from the state of sadness, caused by suffering, to joy and happiness of new life.
