Vernacular budgeting and accounting routines – a longitudinal constructive case study
2022
PurposeThis case study aims to report a longitudinal analysis of the development and use of local “vernacular” accounting practice and a digital rolling-forecast system known as TeamBudget in a public sector organization.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs the constructive research approach which utilizes participative observation in the development of TeamBudget over the 15 years since 2004. The empirical data utilized includes eight interviews and documentary data for the system created.FindingsThe study demonstrates how the actions of employees responsible for developing a locally relevant financial planning system, TeamBudget, facilitated the emergence of new accounting routine…

Equilibrium measures for uniformly quasiregular dynamics
2012
We establish the existence and fundamental properties of the equilibrium measure in uniformly quasiregular dynamics. We show that a uniformly quasiregular endomorphism $f$ of degree at least 2 on a closed Riemannian manifold admits an equilibrium measure $\mu_f$, which is balanced and invariant under $f$ and non-atomic, and whose support agrees with the Julia set of $f$. Furthermore we show that $f$ is strongly mixing with respect to the measure $\mu_f$. We also characterize the measure $\mu_f$ using an approximation property by iterated pullbacks of points under $f$ up to a set of exceptional initial points of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-1$. These dynamical mixing and approximation resu…
Miksi kirjoittaa kirjallisuudentutkimusta kotimaisilla kielillä
2017
Niin, miksi kirjoittaa kirjallisuustieteellisiä tekstejä suomeksi nykyisessä kansainvälisyyttä hehkuttavassa akateemisessa ilmapiirissä? Miksi Avain antaa mahdollisuuden jul- kaista tutkimusartikkeleja (yleensä vain) suomeksi ja ruotsiksi – eikä englanniksi? Kun kerran nykyisiltä korkeasti koulutetuilta kirjallisuudentutkijoilta luonnistuu englanniksi kirjoittaminen siinä missä omalla äidinkielelläänkin. Ja kun nimenomaan englanniksi julkaiseminen helpottaa tieteellistä kommunikoimista kielirajojen yli, mikä tietysti on nykymaailmassa aikaisempaa tärkeämpää. Kansainvälistymispaineet puskevat päälle, mutta – ainakin toistaiseksi, toivottavasti jatkossakin – kansallisilla kielillä on tärkeä a…

Innovation through implementation of a quality improvement method : A finnish public-sector case
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the effectiveness of a quality improvement method in driving innovation in the public sector. The study expands on the concept of innovation and analyses the types and usefulness of the innovations observed. Design/methodology/approach The study utilizes an action research approach. The aim of the quality improvement method introduced is to generate innovations enhancing efficiency. An interventionist research method is required to produce the findings. Data collection methods include a preliminary question sheet, interview, workshops, observation and the examination of other material concerning the case organization. Findings The study suppo…
Spectral Shakespeares. Media Adaptations in the Twenty-First Century.
2013
The book is an exploration of recent, experimental adaptations of Shakespeare on film, TV, and the web. Drawing on adaptation studies and media theory as well as Jacques Derrida’s work, this book argues that these adaptations foreground a cluster of self-reflexive "themes" - from incorporation to reiteration, from migration to addiction, from silence to survival - that contribute to the redefinition of adaptation, and Shakespearean adaptation in particular, as an unfinished and interminable process. The "Shakespeare" that emerges from these adaptations is a fragmentary, mediatized, and heterogeneous presence, a spectral Shakespeare that leaves its mark on our contemporary mediascape.
An Activity Theory Perspective on Creating a New Digital Government Service in Finland
2019
Digitalization of government services is a central goal in many countries. At policy-making level, digital government services are often expected to simultaneously reduce cost and provide citizens with better and more versatile services. Development of new digital government services, however, often involves companies, which typically have differences in their approach to the development and implementation of new digital services compared to the public sector. This study applies activity theory as a lens to identify the similarities and differences between the private and public sector in the development and implementation of a new government digital service. The aim is to identify the cont…
