Nutraceutical Value of Pantelleria Capers (Capparis spinosa L.)

2019

Abstract: Unopened flower buds of Capparis spinosa L. (capers), generally used in the Mediterranean area as food flavoring, are known to be a good source of bioactive compounds. The aim of this work was to evaluate the nutraceutical value of salt-fermented capers collected from different areas of Pantelleria Island (Italy), testing their methylglyoxal and glyoxal trapping capacity and antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), [2,2-azinobis(3-ethylben- zothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] diammonium salt (ABTS), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Hydrophilic extracts were also characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization/ma…

Antibacterial activity of flavonoids and phenylpropanoids from Marrubium globosum ssp. libanoticum.

2006

Marrubium globosum Montbr. et Auch. ex Benth. ssp. libanoticum Boiss. (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, asthma, coughs and other pulmonary and urinary problems. The goal of our study was to assess the biological activity of M. globosum testing the methanol extract of aerial parts for its antibacterial activity against bacteria known to cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin and urinary disorders; the extract showed antibacterial effects against all the strains of bacteria used. A purification of this active extract showed the presence, as main constituents, of verbascoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-beta-D-rutinoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-rutinoside…

Effects of Kaempferol and Myricetin on Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression and Nitric Oxide Production in Rats

2010

Abstract:  When administered as drugs or consumed as food components, polyphenolic compounds synthesized in plants interfere with intracellular signal transduction pathways, including pathways of nitric oxide synthase expression. However, effects of these compounds in vivo do not always correlate with nitric oxide synthase-inhibiting activities revealed in experiments with cultured cells. The initial goal of this work was to compare effects of flavonoids kaempferol and myricetin on inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA and protein expression monitored by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry and to evaluate the impact of these effects on nitric oxide production in rat organs measured by …

New Diosgenin Glycosides from Costus afer

1997

Two new steroidal saponins, aferosides B (1) and C (2), together with the known saponins, dioscin (3) and paryphyllin C (4), were isolated from the roots of Costus afer. The known flavonoid glycoside, kaempferol 3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside (5), was obtained from the aerial parts. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated principally by 2D NMR spectral methods. A structural revision of the sugar sequence was made for the previously reported saponin aferoside A (6) on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis. Saponins 1−4 and 6 did not show any ability to potentiate in vitro cisplatin cytotoxicity in a human colon cancer cell line.

Antioxidant phenolic compounds recovery from Mangifera indica L. by-products by supercritical antisolvent extraction

2015

Abstract Supercritical Antisolvent Extraction (SAE) was used in the recovery of antioxidant compounds from mango by-products. The antioxidant extract was obtained by solid–liquid extraction using aqueous acetone (80% v/v) and subsequent adsorption/desorption in C18 cartridge. Recovery of antioxidants was performed by SAE using SC-CO 2 as antisolvent. The temperature and pressure parameters were varied in the range 35–45 °C and 8–15 MPa. The SAE process allowed the recovery of about 90% of the initial phenolic compounds, the best recovery was obtained at 40 °C and 10 MPa and the main compounds were mangiferin, isomangiferin, quercetin 3-O-galactoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-x…

Moringa oleifera Leaf Powder as Functional Additive in Cookies to Protect SH-SY5Y Cells

2021

The aim of this work is the evaluation of the addition of Moringa leaf powder (MLP) in cookies in terms of antioxidant properties, dough processability and sensorial properties of the cookies. The total content of biophenols and flavonoids in MLP was detected and the identification of the bioactive molecules was performed by HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS measurements, before and after oven treatment at 180 ◦C for 20 min. After a preliminary evaluation of the MLP water soluble fraction (MLPsf) cytotoxicity, its protective effect against an oxidative injury induced in the SH-SY5Y cells was assessed. Data evidence that the bioactive molecules present in MLPsf are effective in preventing ROS production and i…

Effect of leaf removal and ripening stage on the content of quercetin glycosides in Sangiovese grapes

2021

Quercetin haze has been observed over the last few years in some aged Sangiovese wines. This problem could be due to an excess of the quercetin in the wine. Leaf removal increases the exposition of clusters to sunlight, which may enhance flavonol synthesis in the grapes. In this study, we evaluated the dynamics related to extractable flavonols in grapes grown in three usually defoliated Vitis vinifera (L.) cv. Sangiovese vineyards, whose wines showed quercetin precipitates. The particular structure of the vineyards in which the leaf removal experiments were carried out allowed the influence of vineyard, biotype and rootstock on grape flavonol contents at mid-maturation and technological mat…

Flavonols and flavan-3-ols as modulators of xanthine oxidase and manganese superoxide dismutase activity.

2014

Experiments were performed to assess the dose-dependent effects of quercetin, kaempferol, (+) catechin, and (-) epicatechin on superoxide radical production through the modulation of manganese superoxide dismutase and xanthine oxidase activities. The experiments were carried out at flavanoid concentrations ranging from 1 µM to 100 µM. This investigation highlighted that flavonols induced opposite effects on superoxide radical production at different doses, i.e. pro-oxidant at the highest concentration (100 µM) and anti-oxidant at the lowest concentration (1 µM). Similar behaviors were observed for xanthine oxidase with flavan-3ols. The diastereoisomer (the catechin) acted as a stronger radi…

Impact of ultrasound-assisted extraction and solvent composition on bioactive compounds and in vitro biological activities of thyme and rosemary

2020

Mediterranean herbs, specially thyme and rosemary, are important ingredients in food preparation and more recently have been studied as natural sources of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to study the effect of matrix (thyme vs. rosemary), and extraction protocol (conventional extraction vs. ultrasound assisted extraction) solvent composition (water vs. 50:50 ethanol:water solution) on the extraction of high value compounds (phenolic compounds, flavonoids and carotenoids) and also explore the antioxidant, antimicrobial (Listeria innocua, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica), probiotic (Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium lactis), and anti-inflammatory activities. The phe…
