Performing oxidative phosphorylation is the primary role of respiratory chain both in bacteria and eukaryotes. Yet, the branched respiratory chains of prokaryotes contain alternative, low energy-coupling electron pathways, which serve for functions other than oxidative ATP generation (like those of respiratory protection, adaptation to low-oxygen media, redox balancing, etc.), some of which are still poorly understood. We here demonstrate that withdrawal of reducing equivalents by the energetically uncoupled respiratory chain of the bacterium Zymomonas mobilis accelerates its fermentative catabolism, increasing the glucose consumption rate. The high bladder toxicity of the alkylating oxazaphosphorine anticancer drugs, cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide is effectively reduced by the concomitant administration of mesna (sodium 2-mercaptoethane sulphonate). International audience; n-Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), a plasticizer used in polyvinylchloride (PVC) and other polymers, has been orally administered to female Wistar rats with four doses (150, 475, 780 and 1500 mg/kg body weight/day) for 3 consecutive days. Metabolites recovered in urines were analysed by gas chromatography±mass spectrometry (GC±MS) after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Six metabolites were identi®ed. Mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBuP) and mono-n-benzyl phthalate (MBeP) represented respectively 29± 34% and 7±12 % of the total recovered metabolites. Dehydrogenation of 10-methyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (AcrH(2)) by dioxygen (O(2)) proceeds efficiently, accompanied by the two-electron and four-electron reduction of O(2) to produce H(2)O(2) and H(2)O, which are effectively catalyzed by monomeric cobalt porphyrins and cofacial dicobalt porphyrins in the presence of perchloric acid (HClO(4)) in acetonitrile (MeCN) and benzonitrile (PhCN), respectively. We studied in batch reactors the kinetics and characterization of 70 °C, volatile fatty acids (VFAs)-grown, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket granular sludge with 55 and 35 °C sludge as reference. The half-saturation constant (Ks), the inhibition constant (Ki), the maximum specific methane production rate (μCH4max), and the inhibition response coefficient (n) of the 70 °C sludge were 6.15 mM, 48.2 mM, 0.132 h−1, and 2.48, respectively, while no inhibition occurred at 55 and 35 °C, where the Ks was 3.67 and 3.82 mM, respectively. Agents inducing O(6)-methylguanine (O(6)MeG) in DNA, such as N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), are not only highly mutagenic and carcinogenic but also cytotoxic because of the induction of apoptosis. In CHO fibroblasts, apoptosis triggered by O(6)MeG requires cell proliferation and MutSalpha-dependent mismatch repair and is related to the induction of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). In the intensive care unit, sepsis is the main cause of acute renal failure, and treatment with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) has increased in recent years. Fluconazole concentrations in pulmonary tissue and pericardial fluid

In order to investigate the clinical efficacy of the triazole antifungal agent fluconazole (FCA) in the treatment of pulmonary mycosis, in the present study the concentrations of fluconazole in human pulmonary tissue, pericardial fluid and serum were determined at 1, 2, 12 and 13 h after intravenous administration of fluconazole 200 mg. The mean FCA concentrations in the serum were 4.04 mg/l (1 h), 3.82 mg/l (2 h), 2.35 mg/l (12 h) and 2.13 mg/l (13 h). The respective FCA levels in the pulmonary tissue were 4.64 mg/kg, 4.54 mg/kg; 3.50 mg/kg and 3.40 mg/kg and the concentrations in the pericardial fluid were 3.86 mg/l, 3.57 mg/l, 2.35 mg/l and 2.13 mg/l.
