PET Studies of d-Methamphetamine Pharmacokinetics in Primates: Comparison with l-Methamphetamine and (—)-Cocaine

2007

The methamphetamine molecule has a chiral center and exists as 2 enantiomers, d-methamphetamine (the more active enantiomer) and l-methamphetamine (the less active enantiomer). d-Methamphetamine is associated with more intense stimulant effects and higher abuse liability. The objective of this study was to measure the pharmacokinetics of d-methamphetamine for comparison with both l-methamphetamine and (-)-cocaine in the baboon brain and peripheral organs and to assess the saturability and pharmacologic specificity of binding.d- and l-methamphetamine and (-)-cocaine were labeled with (11)C via alkylation of the norprecursors with (11)C-methyl iodide using literature methods. Six different ba…

Distributions of the growth rate of the germ tubes and germination time of Penicillium chrysogenum conidia depend on water activity

2008

The effects of water activities for sporulation (a(wsp)) and germination (a(wge)) on the distributions of the growth rate of the germ tubes (mu) and the germination time (t(G)) of Penicillium chrysogenum conidia were determined by monitoring the length of the same germ tubes throughout the experiments automatically. No relationship between the individual t(G)'s and mu's could be established. Irrespective of the water activity for germination, mu was greater and t(G) was less for conidia produced at 0.95a(wsp) than that at 0.99a(wsp). At 0.99 a(wge) the mean and the standard deviation of t(G) were smaller than those obtained at 0.95a(wge). At 0.99a(wge), normal distributions for mu and t(G) …

Lag time for germination of Penicillium chrysogenum conidia is induced by temperature shifts.

2013

In the environment, fungal conidia are subject to transient conditions. In particular, temperature is varying according to day/night periods. All predictive models for germination assume that fungal spores can adapt instantaneously to changes of temperature. The only study that supports this assumption (Gougouli and Koutsoumanis, 2012, Modelling germination of fungal spores at constant and fluctuating temperature conditions. International Journal of Food Microbiology, 152: 153-161) was carried out on Penicillium expansum and Aspergillus niger conidia that, in most cases, already produced germ tubes. In contrast, the present study focuses on temperature shifts applied during the first stages…

Styrene polymerization using nickel(II) complexes as catalysts

2005

International audience; Styrene polymerization is investigated with neutral and cationic Ni(II) complexes, i.e. Ni(bipy)Me-2, 1, Ni(bipy)Br-2, 2, Ni(phen)Br-2, 3, or Ni(Me(2)phen)Br-2, 4, Ni(acac)(2), 5, (bipy = 2,2 '-bipyridine, phen = phenanthroline, Me,phen = 2,9-dimethyl-1, 10-phenanthroline, acac acetylacetonate), activated by [NHMe2Ph][B(C6F5)(4)] or B(C6F5)(3) as cocatalysts, in the presence of AlMe3. The influence on the polystyrene features and the reaction kinetics of the nickel complex and boron activator, the Al/Ni or B/Ni molar ratios as well as the monomer concentration are studied. Catalytic systems derived from 2, 3 or 5 and [NHMe2Ph][B(C6F5)(4)] at a Ni:B:Al ratio of 1: 1:5…

Co-adsorption processes, kinetics and quantum mechanical modelling of nanofilm semiconductor gas sensors

2010

A quantum mechanical model of co-adsorption on semiconductor surfaces is developed and successfully adopted towards exposure to several gases. It is related to nanofilms and thus allows the application of electric fields altering the electronic surface properties of adsorption centres (electro-adsorptive effect, EAE). The model is matched against experimental data with O 2 , NO 2 and CO measurements under the hypothesis of no direct interaction among the species. However the sequence of adsorption plays an important role where the adsorption of one gas species is opening up other sites that are filled by another sort of impinging molecules. Quantum mechanical modelling of co-adsorption: (a)…

Intravenous Use of Methadone: Efficacy and Safety

2013

Parenteral methadone could be helpful in specific conditions, particularly in unstable conditions of when the oral route is unavailable. Intravenous methadone should be the preferred parenteral route, due to concerns about the local toxicity of subcutaneous route. This chapter assesses aspects regarding the pharmacokinetic issues, the clinical use, the problems associated with the use of intravenous methadone for chronic pain, as well as the perioperative use of intravenous methadone.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of hydroxyethyl starch in hypovolemic pigs; a comparison of peripheral and intraosseous infusion.

1999

Intraosseous (i.o.) infusion is considered a useful technique for the administration of medications and fluids in emergency situations when peripheral intravascular access is not possible. This study investigated the effectiveness of i.o. versus intravenous (i.v.) infusion of hydroxyethyl starch (HES 200/0.5) in hypovolemic pigs. Twenty-three pigs (8- to 9-week-old) were anaesthesized, instrumented and blood was withdrawn (25-30 ml/kg) to50 mmHg mean arterial pressure (MAP). The animals were left untreated in haemorrhage for 30 min. Relevant haemodynamic parameters were monitored and blood samples were collected for blood gas and HES concentration analysis. Infusion of HES via i.v. or i.o. …

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanodots-Ionogels: Preparation, Characterization, and Radical Scavenging Activity

2018

Hybrid diimidazolium-based ionogels were obtained by dispersing nitrogen-doped carbon nanodots (NCNDs) in ionic liquid (IL) solutions and by using dicationic organic salts as gelators. The properties of the NCND-ionogels were studied in terms of thermal stability, mechanical strength, morphology, rheological, and microscopic analyses. Insights into the formation of the hybrid soft material were attained from kinetics of sol-gel phase transition and from estimating the size of the aggregates, obtained from opacity and resonance light-scattering measurements. We demonstrate that, on one hand, NCNDs were able to favor the gel formation both in the presence of gelating and nongelating ILs. On t…

The use of morphokinetics as a predictor of embryo implantation.

2011

Background Time-lapse observation presents an opportunity for optimizing embryo selection based on morphological grading as well as providing novel kinetic parameters, which may further improve accurate selection of viable embryos. The objective of this retrospective study was to identify the morphokinetic parameters specific to embryos that were capable of implanting. In order to compare a large number of embryos, with minimal variation in culture conditions, we have used an automatic embryo monitoring system. Methods Using a tri-gas IVF incubator with a built-in camera designed to automatically acquire images at defined time points, we have simultaneously monitored up to 72 individual emb…

The Boulton-Katritzky Reaction: A Kinetic Study of the Effect of 5-Nitrogen Substituents on the Rearrangement of Some (Z)-Phenylhydrazones of 3-Benzo…

2014

The kinetics of the ring-into-ring conversion of some new (Z)-phenylhydrazones of 3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole containing different nitrogen-substituents at C-5 (3b–d; X = NHMe, NMe2, and NHCOMe) into the relevant triazoles 4b–d have been examined in a wide range of pS+ (0.1–11.9) in 1:1 (v/v) dioxane/water solution. The obtained results have been compared with previous data concerning the (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 5-amino-3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (3a; X = NH2). All of the studied (Z)-phenylhydrazones rearrange through three different pathways (specific acid-catalysed, uncatalysed and general base-catalysed). The different effects of the substituents on the course of the rearrangement in the t…
