Optimization model predictions for postural coordination modes

2003

International audience; This paper examines the ability of the dynamic optimization model to predict changes between in-phase and anti-phase postural modes of coordination and to evaluate influence of two particular environmental and intentional constraints on postural strategy. The task studied was based on an experimental paradigm that consisted in tracking a target motion with the head. An original optimal procedure was developed for cyclic problems to calculate hip and ankle angular trajectories during postural sway with a minimum torque change criterion. Optimization results give a good description of the sudden bifurcation phase between in-phase and anti-phase postural coordination mo…

Thermo-mechanical post-buckling analysis of variable angle tow composite plate assemblies

2017

peer-reviewed The increasing use of composite materials for lightweight structural applications and the extended tailoring capabilities offered by variable stiffness laminates requires rapid and robust analysis tools that adequately describe the mechanical behaviour of such structures. In this work, a Rayleigh–Ritz solution for generally restrained multilayered stiffened variable angle tow plates in the post-buckling regime is presented. The plate model is based on first-order shear deformation theory and accounts for geometrical nonlinearity through von Kármán’s assumptions. General symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequences are considered and Legendre orthogonal polynomials are employed…

Fire safety investigation for road tunnel ventilation systems – An overview

2014

Abstract In recent years, research activities about fire events in tunnel have received a significant impulse, especially after several accidents. The Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) has a fundamental role about. Researchers have spent resources on various topics involving numerical tools as the performance of a ventilation system, the influence of this on the air flow motion in the tunnel or the methods for fire schematization, fire-induced smoke characterization, turbulence models, etc. One of the main phenomena to consider for the safety when a fire occurs in a tunnel is the possibility of the fire-induced smoke to rise the tunnel (backlayering). A well-designed ventilation system shal…

Ubiquitous Co-Driver System and Its Effects on the Situation Awareness of the Driver

2008

The aim of this paper is to explore the effects of ubiquitous computing in cars on the situation awareness and expectations of the driver. In a driving simulation environment with participants using a co-driver system, we investigated how people took and recovered from misinformation provided by the system. The system presented safety-critical information about the upcoming curves on the road, but in the experiment part of the messages contained false information. The effects of this information on participants’ behavior were investigated. On the grounds of the experiment, we discuss two approaches for investigating drivers’ situational awareness, which are based on either mental workload o…

Theoretical approaches for modelling buckling effects in rebars of RC members

2017

Buckling of longitudinal bars in reinforced concrete (RC) members is definitely a critical issue in framed structures subjected to seismic loads. Second order effects can affect the compressive stress–strain law of steel bars, influencing ductility calculations of RC structures. Moreover, literature studies show that buckling can occur over a length wider than stirrups’ pitch (global buckling mode), involving more stirrups and inducing large deflections in the bar. If the critical length is not carefully estimated, stirrups’ failure can occur, causing also the sudden loss of confining effects in concrete. This paper presents the results of different approaches for calculating the crit…

Development of 3D Anti-Swing Control for Hydraulic Knuckle Boom Crane

2021

In this paper, 3D anti-swing control for a hydraulic loader crane is presented. The difference between hydraulic and electric cranes are discussed to show the challenges associated with hydraulic actuation. The hanging load dynamics and relevant kinematics of the crane are derived to model the system and create the 3D anti-swing controller. The anti-swing controller generates a set of tool point velocities which are added to the electro-hydraulic motion controller via feedforward. A dynamic simulation model of the crane is made, and the control system is evaluated in simulations with a path controller in actuator space. Simulation results show significant reduction in the load swing angles …

Comparing the efficiency of wastewater treatment technologies through a DEA metafrontier model

2011

Abstract The assessment of economic and technical efficiency is a useful tool to select the most appropriate technology for wastewater treatment. However, traditional models require that the units being assessed operate with the same technology. To overcome this limitation, we investigate the viability of using a non-concave metafrontier approach that is based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) to calculate the techno-economic efficiency and technological gap ratios (TGRs) of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operating with non-homogeneous technologies. The model is applied to a sample of 99 Spanish WWTPs, encompassing four alternative technologies: activated sludge; aerated lagoon; trick…

Lay-up optimization for the hull of a racing sailing yacht

2001

Abstract Deformability and buckling load of yacht hulls with fiber reinforced plastic sandwich structure depend on the stack sequence of the skins. In this work an optimization of fiber directions of the laminae for a racing yacht is proposed. This procedure has been divided into three parts (i.e. material characterization, surface model definition, lay-up optimization). First of all a set of unidirectional specimens has been realized, by using the same fibers and matrix (carbon/epoxy) used for the hull as well as the same procedure and workers, in order to characterize the material according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard D3039, employing strain gage techniqu…

RC column externally strengthened with RC jackets

2013

In this paper the behaviour in compression of RC columns externally strengthened with concrete jacketing is analysed and a cross-section analysis of the jacketed member under axial load and bending moment is developed. The focus was to study the effect of confinement of concrete jacket on concrete core and the behaviour of compressed bars with buckling effects. Some other important aspects such as shrinkage, creep, old to new concrete surfaces and bond split effects were not included in the model because: the use of thick non-shrink grout jacket and a well-roughened surface of old-to-new concrete was supposed; long term effects were included though corrective coefficients for monolithic beh…
