Dry chlorination of spent nickel metal hydride battery waste for water leaching of battery metals and rare earth elements

An efficient leaching process was developed for nickel, cobalt, and the rare earth elements (REEs) from spent nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery waste. The process involves dry chlorination with ammonium chloride in low temperature to produce water-soluble chlorinated compounds, followed by simple water leaching. The factors affecting the conversion and solubilization were studied, including the amount of ammonium chloride, residence time and temperature in dry chlorination, and solid to liquid ratio, time and temperature in water leaching. Two tetranuclear CoII clusters [Co4(L)2(µ3-Cl)2Cl2] have been prepared by using multidentate diaminobisphenolate ligands. The solid-state structures of the complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The cores of the cluster compounds can be defined as a two-vertex-deficient dicubane geometry (pseudo-dicubane). In the central unit, the cobalt(II) cations are linked through phenoxide oxygen (outer bridges) and chloride anions (inner bridges), previously unprecedented in this type of cobalt cluster. The cobalt (II) complexes have been synthesized from the reaction of the cationic entities (3,4-dimethylaniline (1) and histamine (2)) with metallic salt CoCl2⋅6H2O and thiocyanate ion (SCN−) as a ligand in H2O/ethanolic solution and processing by the evaporation crystal growth method at room temperature to get crystals. Giant octahedral M32 coordination cages were prepared via self-assembly of sulfonylcalix[4]arene-supported tetranuclear M(II) clusters (M = Co, Ni) with hybrid linker based on tris(dipyrrinato)cobalt(III) complexes appended with peripherical carboxylic groups. Strong Exchange Coupling in a Trimetallic Radical-Bridged Cobalt(II)-Hexaazatrinaphthylene Complex

: Reducing hexaazatrinaphthylene (HAN) with potassium in the presence of 18-c-6 produces [{K(18-c-6)}HAN], which contains the S = 1/2 radical [HAN]C ¢ . The [HAN]C ¢ radical can be transferred to the cobalt(II) amide [Co{N- (SiMe3 )2 }2 ], forming [K(18-c-6)][(HAN){Co(N’’)2 }3 ]; magnetic measurements on this compound reveal an S = 4 spin system with strong cobalt–ligand antiferromagnetic exchange and J ¢290 cm¢1 (¢2 J formalism). Ligand mediated evolution of size dependent magnetism in cobalt nanoclusters.

We use density functional theory to model the impact of a ligand shell on the magnetic properties of CoN (15 ≤ N ≤ 55) nanoclusters. We study three different ligand shells on each nanocluster core size, each known to have different electronic interactions with the surface: pure Cl ligand shells (X-type), pure PH3 ligand shells (L-type), and two component ligand shells with mixtures of Cl and PH3 ligands. The simulations show that the identity, arrangement, and total coverage of the ligand shell controls the distribution of local magnetic moments across the CoN core. Synthesis of isomorphous cobalt and nickel thiocyanate coordination compounds: Effect of metals on compound properties

The reaction of 2-methylpiperazine with the thiocyanate ligand and two transition metals leads to the production of two new isomorphous [ML2SCN4] where L is the 2-methylpiperazine and [M =Co (1), and Ni (2)], presenting an octahedral configuration. These compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography, TG-DTA analysis, as well as infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy and TG-DTA.
