The case of literacy motivation : Playful 3D immersive learning environments and problem-focused education for blended digital storytelling
2018
The University of Patras' Library Services designed and offered to primary and secondary schools the pilot educational program “From the Ancient to the Modern Tablets”, featuring immersive multimedia learning experiences about the book history. The pilot program consisted of three stages: a playful library tour, followed by an interactive game-based digital storytelling activity with game elements, and a collaborative creative reflective hands-on activity. Utilizing the avatar psychology power, the visualization and simulation affordances of 3D immersive learning environments and the appeal of storytelling and game-based learning, the “gamified” blended narrative on the book evolution enabl…
The Early Bird gets the Word
2019
Success in an increasingly globalized world sets requirements for versatile communication skills and understanding about other cultures. One of the keys to success is versatile language skills, on which the European Commission spoke out as early as in 1995, recommending that every European citizen should learn two foreign languages in addition to their mother tongue. Now, more than twenty years later, the launch of early A1 language teaching that is to begin in the first grade in Finland, in January 2020, is a significant step towards this goal. Studies show that early foreign language learning needs to be carefully carried out in order to achieve positive effects and the effects that have …
Castron kastraatio : Pedro Juan Gutiérrezin proosa castrokommunistisen utopian romuttajana
2016
This dissertation explores how Pedro Juan Gutiérrez's fiction corresponds to the Castrocommunist utopia. The study has three goals: (1) to explain how Castro-communism has formed, altered and impacted on Cuban literature; (2) to investigate how Gutiérrez's fiction corresponds to the Castro-communist utopia and ideals; and (3) how his parodic (anti)detective story Nuestro GG en La Habana (2004) is based on and relates to Cuban socialist detective stories, Graham Greene's spy farce Our Man in Havana, Castro-communist historiography and the social, ideological and economic shifts in Cuban society during the 1990s. Previous studies on Gutiérrez's fiction have focused almost exclusively on the a…
National context and teacher characteristics : Exploring the critical non-cognitive attributes of novice teachers in four countries
2018
The purpose of this article was to examine what education professionals in four countries (England, Finland, Malawi, and Oman) deemed as the critical (i.e., most important for effective teaching) non-cognitive attributes of novice teachers. Results from an iterative comparative case study showed that participants consistently judged certain attributes of novice teachers as critical, i.e., empathy, organization, and resilience. However, there was also differential importance placed on teachers’ relationships with the community, reflecting theorized cultural differences. The findings provide new insight into how national and cultural context are associated with the perceptions of the critical…
Probabilistic foundations of contextuality
2017
Contextuality is usually defined as absence of a joint distribution for a set of measurements (random variables) with known joint distributions of some of its subsets. However, if these subsets of measurements are not disjoint, contextuality is mathematically impossible even if one generally allows (as one must) for random variables not to be jointly distributed. To avoid contradictions one has to adopt the Contextuality-by-Default approach: measurements made in different contexts are always distinct and stochastically unrelated to each other. Contextuality is reformulated then in terms of the (im)possibility of imposing on all the measurements in a system a joint distribution of a particul…
Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for an Extended Noncontextuality in a Broad Class of Quantum Mechanical Systems
2015
The notion of (non)contextuality pertains to sets of properties measured one subset (context) at a time. We extend this notion to include so-called inconsistently connected systems, in which the measurements of a given property in different contexts may have different distributions, due to contextual biases in experimental design or physical interactions (signaling): a system of measurements has a maximally noncontextual description if they can be imposed a joint distribution on in which the measurements of any one property in different contexts are equal to each other with the maximal probability allowed by their different distributions. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for th…
Using Contextual Action Theory for conceptualization and research on adolescent development
2019
Recently, scholars’ calls for psychology to move beyond traditional ways of conceptualizing and researching human behaviour have increased. Contextual Action Theory (CAT) is a conceptual, methodological, and practical framework that is consistent with these calls. In CAT action is conceptualized as a complex, dynamic, and multidimensional system that can be comprehended from multiple levels of organization and from multiple perspectives. The Action-Project Method (A-PM) is the research method that emerged from CAT. It is a qualitative, naturalistic, process-oriented, longitudinal methodology that has been used to study joint, goal-directed actions and projects. The focus of data gathering a…
La contextualisation de la grammaire française dans la série de manuels Escalier
2017
Tässä tutkimuksessa perehdytään kielioppisääntöjen esitystapaan uudessa b2/b3 -kielen ranskan oppikirjasarjassa Escalier. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, missä määrin siinä otetaan huomioon suo-menkielinen oppija sekä miten siinä peilautuvat ranskalaisten lähdekielioppien esitystavat. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena pohjana käytetään Sorbonnen yliopiston GRAC-tutkimusryhmän (2011) tekemää tutkimus-ta opetuskielioppien kontekstualisaatiosta. Kontekstualisaation käsitteellä viitataan tutkimuksessa siihen, kuinka yleisö, jolle kielioppi on suunnattu, otetaan huomioon sen sisältämissä esitystavoissa sekä sisällöissä, muun muassa mukauttamalla kielioppisääntöjä kohdeyleisölle ymmärrettävämmiksi.…
