The global ranking game : narrowing academic excellence through numerical objectification
2018
The objective of this article is to study some of the intended and unintended effects on academe of the evolving global ranking game. I will start with some broader points on the global ranking game, the formal terms and economic interests it promotes, then continue with a presentation of the Shanghai ranking and its main rival the Times Higher Education. Through reversed engineering, I will bring out the main problems of the Shanghai ranking. I will finish with some of the key features of the demand side, the uses and effects of the tool: the psychosocial mechanisms that reproduce ranking and the lock-ins it creates. peerReviewed
The Dynamic Relationship between Response Processes and Self-Regulation in Critical Thinking Assessments
2021
Our aim was to explore higher education students’ response and self-regulatory processes plus the relationship between these, as evidenced in two types of performance-based critical thinking tasks included in the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) International instrument. The data collection consisted of 20 cognitive laboratories. The data were analyzed using a qualitative approach. The tasks were found to trigger different response and self-regulatory processes. Overall, the performance task evoked more holistic processes than the selected-response questions, in which students’ processes were more question-oriented. The results also indicated the entanglement of students’ response and …

Arjen ja tieteen välissä : sosiaalityön akatemisoitumisen tarkastelua
1990
Sosiaalityön akateeminen asema, tiedepohja ja kohteena oleva todellisuus eivät ole itsestäänselviä eikä samoja kaikkialla. Akateemisuuden erityishaasteena on oppiaineen ammatillinen orientaatio. Pyrin seuraavassa valaisema…

Yhteisöllinen argumentointi sosionomikoulutuksessa avoimia ongelmia ratkottaessa
2017
The aim of this study was to develop teaching methods for practising argumentative problem-solving in a degree program of social services. The purpose was to acquire knowledge about multiple (face-to-face, online, and integrated) learning environments for studying argumentative problem-solving. In addition, the typical features of collaborative argumentation in student discussions were identified. Two teaching experiments were arranged in courses on drug and alcohol abuse. Both experiments required students to solve open-ended problems through role-play regarding a fictive girl’s use of alcohol. The idea of blended learning was applied in the first teaching experiment. Students (n = 29) wro…
Transition to working life and benefits of education as experienced by the graduates of an international master's programme in sport management
2017
University graduates in today’s working life need various skills in addition to the subject specific knowledge of the academic discipline. There is need, for instance, for the ability to use, create and produce knowledge, integration of theory into practice and oral and written presentation skills. All of this challenges the contemporary higher education institutions to integrate these elements into the curriculum to meet the above-mentioned demands. The purpose of this study was to find out, how the graduates an international Master’s Programme in Sport Management have moved to working life and how the education meets its needs, as experienced by the graduates. The data was collected with …
Architecture of dissonance : a study on the strategic management process of higher education internationalization
2018
In this study I analyze the neglected notion of organizational architecture in the strategic process of internationalization in the context of higher education. I examine the internationalization process through the development and management of international master’s degree programmes and their relation to the broader strategy of one particular Finnish university. I interviewed acting coordinators and directors of the programmes regarding their view on the administrative work, as well as the structures and resources, related to the programmes. Strategy documents, internal evaluations, and statistics were also analyzed. The omission of an explicit strategy and strategic program for internat…
