Minorities' communication apprehension and conflict : an investigation of Kurds in Iran and Malays in Singapore
2017
This research project investigates the relationship between communication apprehension and conflict in the intergroup context of minority and majority relationships. Previous studies of communication apprehension have extensively examined its characteristics in the intercultural context of mostly the USA and Eastern Asians cultures. However, the minority-majority intergroup relationship represents distinctive yet understudied characteristics related to socioeconomic status of the groups, which potentially influence their intergroup conflicts. Furthermore, previous communication research called for more in- depth investigation of the various regions. In the light of such considerations, the …
Minority groups and communication apprehension: An investigation of Kurdistan
2017
This study explores communication apprehension among the Iranian Kurdish minority group. Based on a sample of 157 self-administered surveys, the study investigates the relative communication apprehension (CA) score of Iranian Kurds and the influence of sex, age, and education on CA. Results revealed Kurds are relatively less apprehensive than many other cultures. It was also revealed that women have significantly higher levels of dyadic, public, and total CA. Moreover, all CA contexts (dyadic, groups, meeting, and public) and total CA tended to increase after grade 9 and decrease after completing high school. Age however, only had a modest effect on meeting CA. The findings propose higher l…

Pots and places in the Late Chalcolithic period. A view from the Eastern Ḫabur Region
2019
This paper attempts to contextualise the preliminary results of a survey (EHAS) and excavation (KUGAMID) projects recently undertaken by a team of the University of Tübingen in the uppermost region of Iraqi Kurdistan as far as the Late Chalcolithic period is concerned. Settlement patterns and land use, stratigraphic sequences and pottery assemblages are considered here in order to shed light on the dynamics of the emergence of social complexity and the establishment of proto-urban trajectories along the river banks, riverine plains, foothills and mountain valleys of the foothills of Zagros. Preliminary results suggest that the process of urbanisation in this area seems to be connected with …
Family language policy among Kurdish–Persian speaking families in Kermanshah, Iran
2022
Abstract Minority language studies have received increasing attention over the last decade in Iran. Drawing on Spolsky’s (Spolsky, Bernard. 2004. Language policy. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) language policy theoretical framework, this inquiry reports on the language ideologies, practices, and management efforts of an under-explored group of Kurdish families residing in the city of Kermanshah. To this end, semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork guided the collection of data from 40 Kurdish–Persian bilingual parents. The thematic analysis of data revealed glaring inconsistencies among the three elements of family language policy (FLP). That is parents’ strong attachm…
Beyond subsistence? Settlement strategies of the Late Chalcolithic period in the Selevani Plain (Upper Iraqi Tigris)
2022
The aim of this paper is to provide an integrated overview of the settlement and social dynamics present in the upper sector of the Iraqi Tigris River Valley and its immediate hinterland during the Late Chalcolithic period. This has been achieved by processing and interpreting the results of two extensive regional survey projects, namely the Eastern Ḫabur Archaeological Survey (EHAS) and the Land of Nineveh Archaeological Project (LoNAP), recently undertaken along the eastern bank of the river. These results mark a significant advancement in the study of settlement patterns and cultural history compared to what was previously known of this region, which was mostly terra incognita prior to t…
Report on the first season of German-Kurdish excavations at Muqable in 2015
2017
In 2015, a new excavation project entitled “Kurdish-German Archaeological Mission in Dohuk” (KUGAMID) was launched. It is organized as a joint project between the University of Tübingen and the Department of Antiquities of Dohuk and is jointly directed by Peter Pfälzner (Tübingen) and Hassan Ahmad Qasim (Dohuk). Three sites were selected for excavation: Bassetki, Muqable I and Muqable III. The following report will summarize the results of the first season of excavations at the two neighbouring mounds of Muqable I and Muqable III, located approximately 5 km southeast of Bassetki and 23 km west of Dohuk in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan in Iraq. The first season of excavations at Muqable…
Pašnoteikšanās tiesību izmantošanas problemātika: Kurdu gadījuma analīze
2017
Social Inclusion and Exclusion in the Life Stories of Deported Asylum Seekers from Finland to Iraqi Kurdistan
2018
This study explores how social inclusion and exclusion manifest as a dynamic continuum in the everyday lived realities of irregular migrants. Based on narratives of Iraqi Kurdish asylum seekers, who were eventually deported from Finland, the analysis depicts the ways in which societal structures, personal negotiations as well as relationships and social networks interplay in lives characterized by multiple locations, transitions and positions. Establishing and maintaining social contacts, belonging to various networks and being able to decide and act are primary factors that help us understand how the narrators relate to the continuum. The participants construct narratives illustrating seve…
Järjestetty avioliitto – monta tapaa avioitua
2020
