Impact of ''off-label'' use of ivabradine on exercise capacity, gas exchange, functional class, quality of life, and neurohormonal modulation in pati…
2010
Background: Epidemiologic studies indicate that elevated heart rate (HR) is an independent risk factor for mortality and morbidity in patients (pts) with chronic heart failure (CHF). Clinical trials with b-blockers suggest that HR reduction is an important mechanism of their benefit in pts with stable CHF. Pharmacologic inhibition of the If current now provides the opportunity of pure HR reduction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of ‘‘Off-Label’’ use of ivabradine on exercise capacity, gas exchange, functional class, quality of life, and neurohormonal modulation in pts with ischemic CHF. Methods: Between January 2008 and June 2008, a graded maximal exercise test with re…
Spermatocyte chromosome analysis of Helicella virgata (Pulmonata: Helicidae): silver-stained and C-banded chromosomes.
1991
Chromosome numbers of the snail Helicella virgata from the fields of Castellammare del Golfo (Sicily) are n = 26 and 2n = 52. Silver-staining analyses of testicular cells suggest that both mitotic and meiotic chromosomes are involved in nucleolus organization. A within-individual variability in NOR-banding pattern is present in each of the 20 specimens analyzed.
Identification of calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) mRNA-expressing cells in normal and injured rat brain
2009
Calcium sensing receptor (CaSR), isolated for the first time from bovine and human parathyroid, is a G-protein-coupled receptors that has been involved in diverse physiological functions. At present a complete in vivo work on the identification of CaSR mRNA-expressing cells in the adult brain lacks and this investigation was undertaken in order to acquire more information on cell type expressing CaSR mRNA in the rat brain and to analyse for the first time its expression in different experimental models of brain injury. The expression of CaSR mRNAs was found mainly in scattered cells throughout almost all the brain regions. A double labeling analysis showed a colocalization of CaSR mRNA expr…
Systematic monitoring for detection of atrial fibrillation in patients with acute ischaemic stroke (MonDAFIS): a randomised, open-label, multicentre …
2021
Summary Background Systematic electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring improves detection of covert atrial fibrillation in stroke survivors but the effect on secondary prevention is unknown. We aimed to assess the effect of systematic ECG monitoring of patients in hospital on the rate of oral anticoagulant use after 12 months. Methods In this investigator-initiated, randomised, open-label, parallel-group multicentre study with masked endpoint adjudication, we recruited patients aged at least 18 years with acute ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack without known atrial fibrillation in 38 certified stroke units in Germany. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to usual diagnostic procedur…
Training-induced changes in daily energy expenditure: Methodological evaluation using wrist-worn accelerometer, heart rate monitor, and doubly labele…
2019
IntroductionWrist-mounted motion sensors can quantify the volume and intensity of physical activities, but little is known about their long-term validity. Our aim was to validate a wrist motion sensor in estimating daily energy expenditure, including any change induced by long-term participation in endurance and strength training. Supplemental heart rate monitoring during weekly exercise was also investigated.MethodsA 13-day doubly labeled water (DLW) measurement of total energy expenditure (TEE) was performed twice in healthy male subjects: during two last weeks of a 12-week Control period (n = 15) and during two last weeks of a 12-week combined strength and aerobic Training period (n = 13…
In vitro modeling of the ternary interaction in juvenile hormone metabolism
1996
The gradual decline in juvenile hormone (JH) titer followed by its complete clearance early in the last larval instar is required for the onset of the metamorphosis of lepidopterous larvae. JH titer is regulated by both biosynthesis and degradation. Two major pathways for JH metabolism, ester hydrolysis and epoxide hydration, are due to JH esterase (JHE) and JH epoxide hydrolase (JHEH), respectively. In vitro experiments designed to elucidate the molecular mechanism of JH metabolism are described. First, microsomal JHEH in Manduca sexta eggs was identified by using photoaffinity analogs of JH, and purified to homogeneity with ion exchange and hydroxylapatite columns. Purified JHEH from M. s…
Purification and reassessment of ligand binding by the recombinant, putative juvenile hormone receptor of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta
1996
The 29 kDa protein from the larval epidermis of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, that specifically bound photoaffinity analogs of JH I and JH II was produced by a recombinant baculovirus (rJP29). The higher of the two molecular weight forms made corresponded to a protein that could be formed by read‐through of the TGA termination codon to the following TAA. The previously reported, apparent high affinity binding of [methyl‐3H]‐JH I by rJP29 as measured by the dextran‐coated charcoal (DCC) assay [Palli et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 91:6191–6195 (1994)] was found to be artifactual due to endogenous cellular esterases that co‐purified with rJP29 through both DEAE cellulose and MonoQ chrom…
Dispacamide E and other bioactive bromopyrrole alkaloids from two Indonesian marine sponges of the genus Stylissa.
2014
Chemical investigation of methanolic extracts of the two Indonesian marine sponges Stylissa massa and Stylissa flabelliformis yielded 25 bromopyrrole alkaloids including 2 new metabolites. The structures of all isolated compounds were unambiguously elucidated based on extensive 1D and 2D NMR, LR-MS and HR-MS analyses. All isolated compounds were assayed for their antiproliferative and protein kinase inhibitory activities. Several of the tested compounds revealed selective activity(ies) which suggested preliminary SARs of the isolated bromopyrrole alkaloids.
Consumer perceptions of product packaging
2006
Purpose – This paper seeks to discuss the need to understand consumer perceptions in order to correctly design product packing and to achieve the desired position in the minds of consumers.Design/methodology/approach – Data collection was divided into two phases. The first, (based on designers' opinions), to determine the key graphic variables in the design of packaging. The second, (based on consumers' opinions), to associate each packaging with a positioning strategy. The seven product‐positioning strategies selected were represented from the consumers' standpoint using multidimensional scaling. Four maps were obtained related to: alternative packaging colours; alternative packaging typog…
eWOM on Travel Agency Selection: Specialized versus Private Label
2016
In the travel industry, electronic word of mouth (eWOM) elicits a major influence on consumers’ decision making. Travel retailers are facing the new challenges derived from the different nature of their competitors—big hypermarkets, for instance, are extending their brands to travel services—and the challenges derived from online comments that consumers have access to. With a sample of 263 tourists, and using a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis data analysis, this paper shows how the selection between a specialized travel agency and a private label (PL) agency is influenced by five factors: the usefulness attached to online reviews by users and the valence of those online reviews, …
