Selective labelling of melittin with a fluorescent dansylcadaverine probe using guinea-pig liver transglutaminase

1991

Abstract Melittin, a C-terminal peptide, incorporated the fluorescent probe monodansylcadaverine (DNC) when catalysed by guinea-pig liver transglutaminase and Ca2+, as determined by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A 1:1 adduct DNC-melittin was identified in which a single glutamine residue out of two, i.e. Gln25, acts as acyl donor. Incubation of melittin with transglutaminase in the absence of DNC originated high molecular mass complexes indicative that the peptide lysine residue can act as an acyl acceptor. The DNC-melittin was about 3 times more active in the lysis of red cell membranes than native melittin. Fluorescence study of the lab…

Dietary Glycaemic Index Labelling: A Global Perspective

2021

The glycaemic index (GI) is a food metric that ranks the acute impact of available (digestible) carbohydrates on blood glucose. At present, few countries regulate the inclusion of GI on food labels even though the information may assist consumers to manage blood glucose levels. Australia and New Zealand regulate GI claims as nutrition content claims and also recognize the GI Foundation’s certified Low GI trademark as an endorsement. The GI Foundation of South Africa endorses foods with low, medium and high GI symbols. In Asia, Singapore’s Healthier Choice Symbol has specific provisions for low GI claims. Low GI claims are also permitted on food labels in India. In China, there are no nation…

What to show on the wine labels: a hedonic analysis of price drivers of Sicilian wines

2013

Unlike previous literature, we construct a hedonic model of wine price that incorporates all the main categories of variables simultaneously to enable a better evaluation of their importance on wine price formation. A comprehensive model has the advantage of providing more reliable estimates of the attributes' implicit prices thereby facilitating firms' pricing and improving effectiveness of wine production and marketing decisions. We utilize two different datasets of Sicilian wines collecting data from influential wine guides. Our results suggest that wine price strongly depends on objective features such as vintage, alcoholic content, geographical origin, grape variety, producer size and …

ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis of New Asymmetric Xanthene Dyes via Catalyst-Free SNAr with Sulfur Nucleophiles.

2014

Addition of a single functional handle to the tricyclic moiety of fluorescein results in asymmetric xanthene dyes. Our synthesis of a new class of asymmetric xanthenes proceeds via an unusual SNAr with sulfur nucleophiles on electron rich aromatic xanthenes scaffolds in the absence of a metal catalyst. The resulting 3′-thioethers exhibit high photostability and are conveniently converted into reactive dyes for macromolecule labelling.

Ex Ante evaluation of gene flow in oilseed rape with cropping system models

2013

Chapitre 4; Oilseed rape (OSR) genes can escape fields in space via pollen and seeds, and in time via volunteers resulting from seeds lost before or during oilseed rape harvest. When varieties co-exist, e.g. genetically-modified (GM) and non-GM varieties, this spatio-temporal gene flow can lead to the adventitious presence of GM seeds in non-GM harvests and thus cause financial losses for farmers and cooperatives. Gene flow depends on crop locations, succession, and management, as well as the location and management of semi-natural areas such as roadverges. The objective of this investigation was to present a simulation methodology using the spatially-explicit cropping system model GENESYS …

Monoclonal antibodies recognizing larval- and pupal-specific cuticular proteins of Tenebrio molitor (Insecta, Coleoptera)

1993

To study the sequential expression of insect epidermal cells during metamorphosis, a library of monoclonal antibodies (MABs) was prepared against the water-soluble proteins from preecdysial pupal cuticle of Tenebrio molitor. Six selected MABs recognizing only larval and pupal cuticular proteins (CPs) in immunoblot analysis were classified into three types. Type 1 recognized a 21.5 and a 22 kDa polypeptide, type 2, a 26 kDa polypeptide, and type 3, three polypeptides of 18.5, 19.5 and 21.5 kDa. They did not immunoreact with any protein of fat bodies or haemolymph from pharate pupae, suggesting that the antigens originate from the epidermis. The stage-specificity was confirmed by electron mic…

Co-expression and Functional Interaction of Silicatein with Galectin

2006

Sponges (phylum Porifera) of the class of Demospongiae are stabilized by a siliceous skeleton. It is composed of silica needles (spicules), which provide the morphogenetic scaffold of these metazoans. In the center of the spicules there is an axial filament that consists predominantly of silicatein, an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of biosilica. By differential display of transcripts we identified additional proteins involved in silica formation. Two genes were isolated from the marine demosponge Suberites domuncula; one codes for a galectin and the other for a fibrillar collagen. The galectin forms aggregates to which silicatein molecules bind. The extent of the silicatein-mediated s…

Syntheses of novelN-([18F]fluoroalkyl)-N-nitroso-4-methyl-benzenesulfonamides and decomposition studies of corresponding19F- and bromo-analogues: pot…

2003

N-([ 18 F]fluoroalkyl)-N-nitroso-4-methyl-benzensulfonamides [n-alkyl = (-CH 2 ) [ 18,19 F]F, n=2-4)] were synthesized in radiochemical yields ranging from 75-90% to provide new secondary labelling precursors for the syntheses of 18 F-labelled compounds. Preliminary decomposition studies utilizing the corresponding non-radioactive 19 F-compounds as well as the bromo containing analogous compounds were performed to evaluate their stability regarding temperature and basicity of the labelling medium. Furthermore, initial difficulties in labelling these compounds led to the development of a modified labelling procedure applying nearly solvent-free conditions. Extensive decomposition experiments…

The use of metallocenic esters of n-hydroxysuccinimide for metallohapten synthesis

1991

Different organometallic markers have been described in a new technique for the labelling of many drugs. Thus metallocenic esters of [M = (;CO)3CrC6H5; (;CO)3CrC6H5(;CH2)3; η-C5H5FeC5H4; (;CO)3MnηC5H4; (;CO)3MnηC5H4COCH2CH2; ηC5H4(;ηC5H5)Co+PF−6] react with primary or secondary amine drugs [DRUGNHR] for a psychostimulant drug: amphetamine; tricyclic antidepressants—desipramine and nortriptyline; a vasodilator—histamine; an adrenergic substance—norfenefrine; and for a central stimulant—meth-amphetamine, to give the metallohaptens MCON(;R)—DRUG. All these compounds have been fully characterized by different analytical methods and have potentialities for biological assays. This synthetic route…
