Compact Cell Imaging Device (CoCID) provides insights into the cellular origins of viral infections
2021
The overall CoCID concept is centred on providing virologists with a next-generation imaging device, which, through increased penetration and depth of focus, as well as through high natural contrast and sensitivity to organelle density (including virus-related organelles), will produce higher-fidelity ultrastructural images of whole intact cells. These insights will, in turn, help increase our understanding of the links between the structural reorganisation of cells and the mechanisms of viral entry, replication, assembly, and egress in cells. CoCID will provide this valuable imaging capability in the form of a compact lab-scale device that will greatly improve the accessibility of soft X-r…
Offline commissioning of a new gas cell for the MARA Low-Energy Branch
2023
Results of offline commissioning tests for a new dedicated gas cell for the Mass Analysing Recoil Apparatus (MARA) Low-Energy Branch are reported. Evacuation time, ion survival and transport efficiency in helium buffer gas were characterized with a radioactive 223Ra 𝛼-recoil source. Suppression of the ion signal, originating from non-neutralized species in the gas cell, was explored with 219Rn ions, the daughter recoil of 223Ra, as a function of voltage applied to one of the ion-collector electrodes. Two-step laser resonance ionization of stable tin isotopes produced inside the gas cell from a heated bronze filament was demonstrated, and broadening of the atomic resonances in argon buffer …

New exotic beams from the SPIRAL 1 upgrade
2018
Since 2001, the SPIRAL 1 facility has been one of the pioneering facilities in ISOL techniques for reaccelerating radioactive ion beams: the fragmentation of the heavy ion beams of GANIL on graphite targets and subsequent ionization in the Nanogan ECR ion source has permitted to deliver beams of gaseous elements (He, N, O, F, Ne, Ar, Kr) to numerous experiments. Thanks to the CIME cyclotron, energies up to 20 AMeV could be obtained. In 2014, the facility was stopped to undertake a major upgrade, with the aim to extend the production capabilities of SPIRAL 1 to a number of new elements. This upgrade, which is presently under commissioning, consists in the integration of an ECR booster in the…
Quantification of cortical proprioceptive processing through a wireless and miniaturized EEG amplifier.
2022
Corticokinematic coherence (CKC) is computed between limb kinematics and cortical activity (e.g. MEG, EEG), and it can be used to detect, quantify and localize the cortical processing of proprioceptive afference arising from the body. EEG-based studies on CKC have been limited to lab environments due to bulky, non-portable instrumentations. We recently proposed a wireless and miniaturized EEG acquisition system aimed at enabling EEG studies outside the laboratory. The purpose of this work is to compare the EEG-based CKC values obtained with this device with a conventional wired-EEG acquisition system to validate its use in the quantification of cortical proprioceptive processing. Eleven hea…
Relationship between mothers' enjoyment and sedentary behavior and physical activity of mother-child dyads using a movement-to-music video program : …
2020
Background: Parental support and participation in physical activity (PA) with children and parents' acting as a role model for less sedentary behaviors (SB) are critical factors for children's healthier lifestyle. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between mothers' enjoyment and participants' sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) as a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using data from Moving Sound RCT in the Pirkanmaa area of Finland. Methods: The participants were 108 mother-child dyads (child age 5-7 years) who completed the eight-week exercise intervention using a movement-to-music video program in their homes. Mothers' enjoyment w…
Manifestations of the tongue in Neurofibromatosis type 1
2006
Objective: The aim of this study is to analyse alterations of the tongue and the correlation between these lesions and different types of tumor. Subjects and methods: A total of 258 cases (131 females, 127 males) of neurofibromatosis type 1 were screened between 1994 and 2004 in our Dermatology Department. All patients included in this study have NF1, as defined by the NIH Consensus Conference. Three cases of neurofibromas of the tongue in patients with neurofibromatosis type were reported. Results: Our patients showed nodular lesions on the tongue, related to neurofibromas in two patients and plexiform neurofibroma in one patient, respectively. Clinical and hystopatological findings wer…

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disease with complete penetrance but high variable expressivity. NF1 is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the NF1 gene, a negative regulator of the RAS-MAPK pathway. The NF1 gene has one of the highest mutation rates in human disorders, which may explain the outbreak of independent de novo variants in the same family. Here, we report the co-occurrence of pathogenic variants in the NF1 and SPRED1 genes in six families with NF1 and Legius syndrome, using next-generation sequencing. In five of these families, we observed the co-occurrence of two independent NF1 variants. All NF1 variants were classified as pathogenic, according to t…
A novel NF1 mutation in a pediatric patient with renal artery aneurysm
2022
Abstract Background Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous syndrome, due to heterozygous pathogenic variants in NF1 gene. The main clinical manifestations are multiple café au lait spots, axillary and inguinal freckling, cutaneous and plexiform neurofibromas, optic glioma, Lisch nodules and osseous lesions, such as sphenoid and tibial dysplasia. Vasculopathy is another feature of NF1; it consists of stenosis, aneurysms, and arteriovenous malformations, frequently involving renal arteries. Case presentation We report on a 9-year-old girl with a novel mutation in NF1 gene and renal artery aneurysm, treated by coil embolization and complicated with hypertension. Conclusion Vasculop…
How adherence to the updated physical activity guidelines should be assessed with accelerometer?
2022
Abstract Background The aerobic part of the recently updated physical activity (PA) guidelines for adults recommends at least 150 min of moderate or at least 75 of vigorous-intensity PA or an equivalent combination of both. PA can be accumulated of any bout duration. On an absolute scale, moderate-intensity threshold is 3 metabolic equivalents (METs) and vigorous 6 METs. On a scale relative to individual’s personal capacity, moderate-intensity threshold is 40% and vigorous 60% of the oxygen uptake reserve. In this study, the adherence to the new guidelines was evaluated using both absolute and relative thresholds. Methods Totally, 1645 adults aged 20–64 years, participated in this populatio…
