FINITE ELEMENT RESOLUTION OF CONVECTION-DIFFUSION EQUATIONS WITH INTERIOR AND BOUNDARY LAYERS

1996

We present a new algorithm for the resolution of both interior and boundary layers present in the convection-diffusion equation in laminar regimes, based on the formulation of a family of polynomial-exponential elements. We have carried out an adaptation of the standard variational methods (finite element method and spectral element method), obtaining an algorithm which supplies non-oscillatory and accurate solutions. The algorithm consists of generating a coupled grid of polynomial standard elements and polynomial-exponential elements. The latter are able to represent the high gradients of the solution, while the standard elements represent the solution in the areas of smooth variation.

Changes in the expression of cation-Cl- cotransporters, NKCC1 and KCC2, during cortical malformation induced by neonatal freeze-lesion.

2007

Focal cortical malformations comprise a heterogeneous group of disturbances in brain development, often associated with intractable epilepsy. A focal freeze-lesion of cerebral cortex in newborn rat produces a cortical malformation that resembles human polymicrogyria, clinical conditions that results from abnormal neuronal migration. The change in GABAergic functions that occurs during early brain development is induced by an alteration in Cl(-) homeostasis and plays important roles in neocortical development by modulating such events as laminar organization and synaptogenesis. We therefore investigated the relationship between pathogenesis of polymicrogyria and ontogeny of Cl(-) homeostasis…

Numerical and experimental MHD studies of Lead-Lithium liquid metal flows in multichannel test-section at high magnetic fields

2018

Abstract Numerical simulation and experiments have been performed at high magnetic fields (1–3T) to study the MHD assisted molten Lead-Lithium (PbLi) flow in a model test-section which has typical features of multiple parallel channel flows as foreseen in various blanket module of ITER. The characteristics Hartmann number of the presented case study is up to 1557 which is relevant to typical fusion blanket conditions. Symbols B0, a, σ, μ in the definition of Hartmann number are strength of the applied magnetic field, characteristic length scale which is half the channel width parallel to the magnetic field, electrical conductivity and dynamic viscosity of PbLi respectively. Flow distributio…

A Wind Tunnel Study of Turbulence Effects on the Scavenging of Aerosol Particles by Water Drops

2001

Abstract Laboratory experiments are described where the effects of turbulence on the impaction scavenging of aerosol particles by water drops were investigated. During the experiments the drops were freely suspended at their terminal velocities in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel. Turbulence in the tunnel airstream was produced by placing a needle obstruction upstream of the floating drop. The energy dissipation rates e were between 0.03 and 0.5 m2 s−3. The power spectrum covered a range of k values between 102 and 3 × 103 m−1, agreeing with atmospheric observations within this range. Collector drops of 346-μm, 1.68-mm, and 2.88-mm radius were exposed to indium acetylacetonate aerosol particl…

Numerical simulation of nanofluids for improved cooling efficiency in a 3D copper microchannel heat sink (MCHS)

2017

ABSTRACTIn this paper, laminar nanofluid flow in 3D copper microchannel heat sink (MCHS) with rectangular cross section, and a constant heat flux, has been treated numerically using the computational fluid dynamics software (FLUENT). Results for the temperature and velocity distributions in the investigated MCHS are presented. In addition, experimental and numerical values are compared in terms of friction factors, convective heat transfer coefficients, wall temperature and pressure drops, for various particle volume concentrations and Reynolds numbers. The numerical results show that enhancing the heat flux has a very weak effect on the heat transfer coefficient for pure water, but an appr…

Influence of variable feeding on mesophilic and thermophilic co-digestion of Laminaria digitata and cattle manure

2014

Abstract In this study the effect of various feeding ratios on mesophilic (∼35 °C) and thermophilic (∼50 °C) co-digestion of brown algae Laminaria digitata and cattle manure was investigated. Algae input of 15% VS caused no influence on specific methane yield from mesophilic co-digester while deteriorated the process parameters such as the development of propionic acid in total volatile fatty acids (tVFA) pattern of the thermophilic co-digester. The accumulation of tVFA continued for the latter reactor as the feeding ratio of algae enhanced to 24% VS, but the specific methane yield improved dramatically. Same rise in feeding once again showed no improvement in specific methane yield from me…

PGC1α Regulates the Endothelial Response to Fluid Shear Stress via Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Control of Heme Oxygenase-1

2021

AbstractFluid shear stress (FSS) is known to mediate multiple phenotypic changes in the endothelium. Laminar FSS (undisturbed flow) is known to promote endothelial alignment to flow that is key to stabilizing the endothelium and rendering it resistant to atherosclerosis and thrombosis. The molecular pathways responsible for endothelial responses to FSS are only partially understood. Here we have identified peroxisome proliferator gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) as a flow-responsive gene required for endothelial flow alignment in vitro and in vivo. Compared to oscillatory FSS (disturbed flow) or static conditions, laminar FSS (undisturbed flow) increased PGC-1α expression and its transcription…

Linear instability of mixed convection of cold water in a porous layer induced by viscous dissipation

2009

Accepted version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Thermal Sciences, Elsevier Published version available on Science Direct: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijthermalsci.2008.06.012 An analysis of linear stability of the stationary laminar Darcy flow in a horizontal porous layer is performed. The porous layer is saturated with cold water. The upper plane boundary is assumed to be subject to heat transfer with finite conductance to an environment at the temperature of maximum density of cold water. The lower plane boundary is adiabatic. Convective instabilities are caused by flow viscous dissipation, inducing a basic temperature distribution that decreases in the u…

Characterization and Stage-Dependent Lineage Analysis of Intermediate Progenitors of Cortical GABAergic Interneurons

2021

Intermediate progenitors of both excitatory and inhibitory neurons, which can replenish neurons in the adult brain, were recently identified. However, the generation of intermediate progenitors of GABAergic inhibitory neurons (IPGNs) has not been studied in detail. Here, we characterized the spatiotemporal distribution of IPGNs in mouse cerebral cortex. IPGNs generated neurons during both embryonic and postnatal stages, but the embryonic IPGNs were more proliferative. Our lineage tracing analyses showed that the embryonically proliferating IPGNs tended to localize to the superficial layers rather than the deep cortical layers at 3 weeks after birth. We also found that embryonic IPGNs derive…

Testing a theoretical resistance law for overland flow on a stony hillslope

2020

Overland flow, sediments, and nutrients transported in runoff are important processes involved in soil erosion and water pollution. Modelling transport of sediments and chemicals requires accurate estimates of hydraulic resistance, which is one of the key variables characterizing runoff water depth and velocity. In this paper, a new theoretical power–velocity profile, originally deduced neglecting the impact effect of rainfall, was initially modified for taking into account the effect of rainfall intensity. Then a theoretical flow resistance law was obtained by integration of the new flow velocity distribution. This flow resistance law was tested using field measurements by Nearing for the …
