The European sTANDEM project for certification in medical English: standards, acceptability and transgression(s)

2014

In the global world of international communication, employers or institutions that wish to determine the language skills of non-native speakers of English usually turn to generalist proficiency tests such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the slightly more business-oriented TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). These tests enable test takers to certify that they have reached a certain level in skills needed in everyday life and, sometimes, workplace situations, but they do not assess language skills for specific purposes.Aware of this vacuum, a consortium of European teachers/researchers and international experts in the domain of medical English unde…

Implementation of the inclusive CICO Plus intervention for pupils at risk of severe behaviour problems in SWPBS schools

2020

Check in–check out (CICO) is a widely used and studied behavioural intervention. Although CICO is an effective way to support pupils’ behaviour in a school context, not all pupils benefit from basic CICO. A single-case experimental study was designed to evaluate the effects of CICO Plus support (CICO Plus) for participants whose behaviour was determined to be non-responsive to basic CICO. CICO Plus was planned and implemented with four pupils identified by school CICO teams as needing additional behavioural support. Individual CICO Plus support was planned by multiprofessional teams working on each pupil’s case. The CICO Plus support was based on teaching social skills and behaviour at leas…

Building natural science learning through youth science camps

2018

This study focuses on a youth science camp for pupils in sixth to ninth grades that is organized annually by the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The main idea of the science camp is to learn to do guided inquiry in nature. The study investigates the significance of science camp for encouraging young participants to learn science and how the camp supports their learning. The research method used was a survey. Altogether, 47 youth participated in the camp in 2012 and 2013. The results show that the participants wanted to learn more about science than secondary school could offer, and science camp had a positive impact on their interest in science. It was possible to introduce important conc…

Assembly and dichroism of a four-component halogen-bonded metal-organic cocrystal salt solvate involving dicyanoaurate(I) acceptors

2017

We describe the use of dicyanoaurate ions as linear ditopic metal–organic acceptors for the halogen bond-driven assembly of a dichroic metal–organic cocrystal based on azobenzene chromophores. Structural analysis by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the material is a four-component solid, consisting of anticipated anionic metal–organic halogen-bonded chains based on dicyanoaurate ions, as well as complex potassium-based cations and discrete molecules of the crown ether 15-crown-5. Importantly, the structural analysis revealed the parallel alignment of the halogen-bonded chains required for dichroic behaviour, confirming that crystal engineering principles developed for the desi…

Influence of nitrogen status in wine alcoholic fermentation

2019

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for yeast during alcoholic fermentation. Nitrogen is involved in the biosynthesis of protein, amino acids, nucleotides, and other metabolites, including volatile compounds. However, recent studies have called several mechanisms that regulate its role in biosynthesis into question. An initial focus on S. cerevisiae has highlighted that the concept of "preferred" versus "non-preferred" nitrogen sources is extremely variable and strain-dependent. Then, the direct involvement of amino acids consumed in the formation of proteins and volatile compounds has recently been reevaluated. Indeed, studies have highlighted the key role of lipids in nitrogen regulation in…

Rates of uptake and metabolism of indole-3-acetic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid by cultured leaf segments at different stages of developmen…

1987

Immature leaf tissue of Triticum timopheevi Zukh. responded to supplied auxin and showed cell division in culture. The rates of uptake and of metabolism of indole-3-acetic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid by such tissues were measured and compared with those of mature auxin-unresponsive tissue. The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether or not the concentration of auxin in cultured mature tissue was a factor limiting the cell division response to auxin. The data indicate that neither alterations in rates of uptake nor alterations in rates of metabolism could explain the loss of responsiveness to auxin which apparently occurs during cell differentiation. The results are…

Alkane dehydrogenation on defective BN quasi-molecular nanoflakes: DFT studies

2020

Lower alkanes are feedstocks readily available but relatively inert. The con- version of low cost alkanes to industrially relevant alkenes is usually carried out on metal-based heterogeneous catalysts. Considering both the cost and the potential harmfulness of the metal involved in the dehydrogenation cat- alysts (typically, platinum or chromium), the study of metal-free processes represents an important challenge for the industrial chemistry in order to address more sustainable protocols and different routes either to activate or transform alkanes. Framed in this context, it was investigated, using a den- sity functional theory approach, the potential dehydrogenation activity of de- fectiv…

Bioactive Components from Leaf Vegetable Products

2014

Abstract Traditionally, plant-based products have been used for different purposes. From ancient times, people on all continents have long applied poultices and imbibed infusions of indigenous plants. Numerous reports regarding the use of leaf vegetable products for the treatment of many human diseases have been made. Proven medicinal properties include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antibacterial, and antiviral effects. Most of these properties can be attributed to its high content in bioactive compounds. Bioactive compounds are secondary metabolites of plants, which are extra nutritional constituents that typically occur in small quantities in foods. They are being intensiv…

ChemInform Abstract: Review: Solution Equilibria of Ternary Complexes Formed from Copper(II), Aliphatic Amines, and Bioligands

2014

This review provides a summary of the coordination chemistry of ligands in the ternary system: copper(II)–aliphatic amine–bioligand, where amine = ethylenediamine – En, diethylenetriamine – Dien, or N, N, N′, N″, N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine – Me5dien, and bioligand = selected amino acid, aminohydroxamic acid, or aminophosphonic acid, in aqueous solution. We would like to show the specific interactions of copper(II) in ternary systems in the context of complex equilibria chemistry.

Downsizing of Nanocrystals While Retaining Bistable Spin Crossover Properties in Three-Dimensional Hofmann-Type {Fe(pz)[Pt(CN)4]}–Iodine Adducts

2021

Mastering nanostructuration of functional materials into electronic devices is presently an essential task in materials science. This is particularly relevant for spin crossover (SCO) compounds, whose properties are extremely sensitive to size reduction. Indeed, the search for materials displaying strong cooperative hysteretic SCO properties operative at the nanoscale close near room temperature is extremely challenging. In this context, we describe here the synthesis and characterization of 20-30 nm surfactant-free nanocrystals of the FeII Hofmann-type polymer {FeII(pz)[PtII,IVIx(CN)4]} (pz = pyrazine), which affords the first example of a robust three-dimensional coordination polymer, sub…
