Pathways Through Peer Assessment: Implementing Peer Assessment in a Lower Secondary Physics Classroom

2020

AbstractPeer assessment has been shown to advance learning, for example, by improving one’s work, but the variance of learning benefits within or between studies has not been explained. The purpose of this case study was to examine what kinds of pathways students have through peer assessment and to study which factors affect them when peer assessment is implemented in the early stage of physics studies in the context of conducting and reporting inquiry. Data sources used include field notes, audio recordings of lessons, student lab reports, written peer feedback, and student interviews. We examined peer assessment from the perspective of individual students and found 3 profiles of peer asse…

Action simulation in the human brain: Twelve questions

2013

Although the idea of action simulation is nowadays popular in cognitive science, neuroscience and robotics, many aspects of the simulative processes remain unclear from empirical, computational, and neural perspectives. In the first part of the article, we provide a critical review and assessment of action simulation theories advanced so far in the wider literature of embodied and motor cognition. We focus our analysis on twelve key questions, and discuss them in the context of human and (occasionally) primate studies. In the second part of the article, we describe an integrative neuro-computational account of action simulation, which links the neural substrate (as revealed in neuroimaging …

Évolution du stress gélif et idéotypes de pois d'hiver dans le contexte de changement climatique, à une échelle régionale.

2017

11 pages; International audience; Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is an important crop in temperate regions for its high seed protein concentration that is particularly sensitive to abiotic stresses. The abrupt temperature increase known as the “1987/1988 temperature regime shift” that occurs over Europe is questioning how winter pea will perform in the changing climate. This study assessed the winter frost damage evolution along from 1961 to 2015 in Burgundy-Franche-Comté by using: (1) daily observed and gridded regional temperature data and (2) a validated crop winter frost stress model calibrated for pea. This study shows a global decrease of the frost stress nevertheless resulting from a subtle …

Reconstruction of human subsistence and husbandry strategies from the Iberian Early Neolithic: A stable isotope approach

2018

Objectives The Early Neolithic involved an important social and economic shift that can be tested not only with the material culture, but also through biomolecular approaches. The Iberian Peninsula presents few Early Neolithic sites where fauna and humans can be analyzed together from an isotopic perspective. Here we present an isotopic study on the site of Cueva de Chaves as an example for understanding the dietary and economical changes that took place during Early Neolithic in Iberia. Material and methods Here we apply carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis to bone collagen from 4 humans and 64 faunal samples from 14 different species. The large dataset belongs to the same unique ch…

2014

Morphogenesis in plants is usually reconstructed by scanning electron microscopy and histology of meristematic structures. These techniques are destructive and require many samples to obtain a consecutive series of states. Unfortunately, using this methodology the absolute timing of growth and complete relative initiation of organs remain obscure. To overcome this limitation, an in vivo observational method based on Epi-Illumination Light Microscopy (ELM) was developed and tested with a male inflorescence meristem (floral unit) of the handkerchief tree Davidia involucrata Baill. (Nyssaceae). We asked whether the most basal flowers of this floral unit arise in a basipetal sequence or, altern…

MATHEMATICS IN THE CONTEXT OF FUZZY SETS: BASIC IDEAS, CONCEPTS, AND SOME REMARKS ON THE HISTORY AND RECENT TRENDS OF DEVELOPMENT

2011

The main aim of this paper is to discuss the basic ideas and concepts of the so called ‘Fuzzy Mathematics’ and to give a brief survey of the history and of some trends in recent development of mathematics and its applications in the context of fuzzy sets. As a potential reader we imagine a mathematician, who is not working in the field of ‘fuzzy mathematics’, but wishes to have some idea about this vast field in modern science.

High-energy monitoring of NGC 4593 II. Broad-band spectral analysis: testing the two-corona model

2019

It is widely believed that the primary X-ray emission of AGN is due to the Comptonisation of optical-UV photons from a hot electron corona, while the origin of the 'soft-excess' is still uncertain and matter of debate. A second Comptonisation component, called warm corona, was therefore proposed to account for the soft-excess, and found in agreement with the optical-UV to X-ray emission of a sample of Seyfert galaxies. In this context, we exploit the broadband XMM-Newton and NuSTAR simultaneous observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4593 to further test the so called "two corona model". The NGC 4593 spectra are well reproduced by the model, from the optical/UV to the hard X-rays. Moreover, …

Game theory and contemporary conflicts

2019

GAME THEORY AND CONTEMPORARY CONFLICTSThe article presents the application of game theory in the context of civil and military security. Game theory is used to study conflict situations involving more than one decision-maker. Special emphasis was given to the significant role of information in modern military operations. The article contains examples illustrating similarities between civil and military problems.

2015

The combination of local orientation collinearity and spatial frequency contrast in contour integration was studied in two experiments using a 2AFC contour detection and discrimination task. Target contours were defined by local orientation collinearity, spatial frequency contrast between contour and background elements, or both cues. Experiments differed in the source of spatial frequency contrast by manipulating the spatial frequency of either contour or background elements. Cue summation gains, defined as the performance benefit of double cue conditions over single cue conditions, were evaluated and tested against the predictions derived from probability summation and linear summation. S…
