Does training in syllable recognition improve reading speed? A computer-based trial with poor readers from second and third grade.

Repeated reading of infrequent syllables has been shown to increase reading speed at the word level in a transparent orthography. This study confirms these results with a computer-based training method and extends them by comparing the training effects of short syllables and long frequent and infrequent syllables, controlling for rapid automatized naming. Our results, based on a sample of 150 poor readers of Finnish, showed clear gains in reading speed regarding all trained syllables, but a transfer effect to the word level was evident only in the case of long infrequent syllables. Mediated learning materials: visibility checks in telepresence robot mediated classroom interaction

Videoconferencing is increasingly used in education as a way to support distance learning. This article contributes to the emerging interactional literature on video-mediated educational interaction by exploring how a telepresence robot is used to facilitate remote participation in university-level foreign language teaching. A telepresence robot differs from commonly used videoconferencing set-ups in that it allows mobility and remote camera control. Grammars++ for modelling information in text

Abstract Grammars provide a convenient means to describe the set of valid instances in a text database. Flexibility in choosing a grammar can be exploited to provide information modelling capability by designing productions in the grammar to represent entities and relationships of interest to database applications. Additional constraints can be specified by attaching predicates to selected nonterminals in the grammar. When used for database definition, grammars can provide the functionality that users have come to expect of database schemas. Extended grammars can also be used to specify database manipulation, including query, update, view definition, and index specification.

Grammar is the heart of language : grammar and its role in language learning among Finnish university students

This article presents and discusses views on grammar and its role in formal language learning amongst Finnish university students. The results are based on a questionnaire which was distributed to students at the University of Jyväskylä as part of institutional action research. The background to the project was a feeling amongst some teachers of increased divergence between student respectively language teacher understandings of the role of grammar in language teaching. Knowledge-based verification of concatenative programming patterns inspired by natural language for resource-constrained embedded devices

We propose a methodology to verify applications developed following programming patterns inspired by natural language that interact with physical environments and run on resource-constrained interconnected devices. Natural language patterns allow for the reduction of intermediate abstraction layers to map physical domain concepts into executable code avoiding the recourse to ontologies, which would need to be shared, kept up to date, and synchronized across a set of devices. A Metamodeling Approach to Evolution

With the increasing complexity of systems being modeled, analysis & design move towards more and more abstract methodologies. Most of them rely on metamodeling tools that employ multi-view models and the four-layer metamodeling architecture. Our idea is to use the metamodeling approach to classify and to constraint the possible evolutions of an information system with the effect to improve both detection of evolution conflicts and disciplined reuse. Within the domain of UML metamodeling, a refinement of the metamodel-level classification is proposed that includes bases for defining a metric of the evolution (in terms of distance between metamodels).

Teaching online is a new challenge for every single teacher. Mathematics in particular remains the school subject that requires special teaching tools. This article describes Edgar Dale’s «Cone of experience» and Bruner’s learning approaches for synchronous and asynchronous teaching in Mathematics. It also describes the most important tools that can be used for online teaching in a combination of both formats, asynchronous and synchronous. These teaching methods are described not only in terms of digital tools, but also in terms of Jerome Bruner’s theories on information processing.

Iterative pairs and multitape automata

In this paper we prove that if every iterative k-tuple of a language L recognized by a k-tape automaton is very degenerate, then L is recognizable. Moreover, we prove that if L is an aperiodic langnage recognized by a deterministic k-tape automaton, then L is recognizable.
