In line with recent Conversation Analytic work on language learning as situated practice, this article investigates how interactants can create language learning opportunities for themselves and others in and through social interaction. The study shows how the participants of BigBrother Finland, a reality TV show, whose main communication is in Finnish, take up resources provided by English and use them for learning in their interaction. Designing knowledge construction in pre-service teachers’ collaborative planning talk

In this paper, we report on a qualitative study of student teachers’ collaboration in planning and implementing a course that integrated physics and the Finnish language. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews were examined using qualitative content analysis, first, to discover what kind of space for knowledge construction student teachers designed for learners and, second, to identify the characteristics of their collaboration in developing a new cross-disciplinary pedagogical practice. Bilingual students in the United States are often diminished to their student status of “English Language Learner” (ELL). This chapter discusses opportunities for multilingual and social justice-based pedagogies in the context of teaching English in Finnish compulsory schools. Recent changes in Finland’s national curriculum (FNCCBE, Finnish National Core Curriculum for Basic Education. English version 2016. The aim of the study is to explore situational, cultural and pragmatic factors that might trigger code-switching during informal conversations outside of the classroom at school among bilingual adolescents in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. An attempt is made to clarify different functions of code-switching, i.e. why bilingual adolescents code-switch from Swedish to Finnish and vice versa. The conversational data, consisting of video-recorded group and pair conversations, was collected in 2014–2015 at six junior high schools in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. Tässä artikkelissa käsittelen kahdeksan Berliinissä asuneen suomalaislähtöisen kuvataiteilijan käsityksiä kielten merkityksestä identiteettiinsä ja taiteeseensa. Vastaan kolmeen tutkimuskysymykseen; ensinnäkin siihen, miten eri kielten käyttö on vaikuttanut taiteilijoiden identiteettiin, toisekseen siihen, miten he käyttävät kieliä visuaalisessa taiteessaan ja lopuksi siihen, mikä rooli kielellä, monikielisyydellä/limittäiskieleilyllä on heidän taiteessaan. Tematem artykułu jest zakreślenie ram pola badawczego tworzonego przez trzy tytułowe pojęcia: historia, pamięć, język. English in interpretation to Finnish Sign Language : the forms and functions of chaining sequences in educational interpreting

Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ketjutusta (chaining) kieleilyn (languaging) käytänteenä viittomakielen tulkkauksessa. Tutkimuskysymyksinä esitettiin, mitä semioottisia resursseja viittomakielen tulkit käyttivät englantia sisältävissä ketjutussekvensseissä sekä mitä funktioita em. sekvensseillä oli. Tutkimuksessa tuotettiin yksityiskohtaista kuvausta autenttisesta aineistosta. Tutkimuskohteena oli kolme englannin kielestä suomalaiselle viittomakielelle tulkattua korkeakoululuentoa. Luennot videoitiin ja niistä paikannettiin ne kohdat, joissa tulkkeessa esiintyi englantia. Nämä kohdat annotoitiin käyttäen ELAN-annotointiohjelmaa.
