Translanguaging as a Key to Socially Just English Teaching in Finland

This chapter discusses opportunities for multilingual and social justice-based pedagogies in the context of teaching English in Finnish compulsory schools. Recent changes in Finland’s national curriculum (FNCCBE, Finnish National Core Curriculum for Basic Education. English version 2016. Finnish National Board of Education Publications 2014/2016) promote a language-aware approach that is inclusive of students’ multilingual backgrounds. The document understands multilingualism as variation in any language system, including subject-specific languages, different modalities, and explicit language education. Vēsturiskā saskarsme starp kultūrām, tehnoloģisko inovāciju parādīšanās, globalizācija un internacionalizācija ir tikai daži no faktoriem, kas ir veicinājuši angļu valodas globālu lietojumu un leksisko aizgūšanu no angļu valodas. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir analizēt anglicismu lietojumu rakstos par uzņēmējdarbību Spānijas tiešsaistes laikrakstā „El País”. Kvantitatīvā un kvalitatīvā analīze tiek izmantota, lai klasificētu un analizētu apkopoto datu krājumu, kas sastāv no 164 anglicismiem. The aim of the study is to explore situational, cultural and pragmatic factors that might trigger code-switching during informal conversations outside of the classroom at school among bilingual adolescents in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. An attempt is made to clarify different functions of code-switching, i.e. why bilingual adolescents code-switch from Swedish to Finnish and vice versa. The conversational data, consisting of video-recorded group and pair conversations, was collected in 2014–2015 at six junior high schools in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia suomalaisten kaksikielisten perheiden kirjanlukutilanteita. Kielinä perheissä ovat suomi ja ruotsi. Kiinnostuksen pääasiallisina kohteina ovat vanhempien ja lasten kielenkäyttö, lukutilanteiden rakentuminen, lasten osallistaminen lukutilanteessa ja kieleen liittyvät keskustelut lukuhetken aikana. Tutkielman aineisto on kerätty Jyväskylän yliopiston Child2ling-tutkimusprojektin yhteydessä. Projektissa tutkitaan kaksikielisiä perheitä kolmella eri paikkakunnalla Suomessa, ja tutkimusta tehdään monitahoisin menetelmin. Designing knowledge construction in pre-service teachers’ collaborative planning talk

In this paper, we report on a qualitative study of student teachers’ collaboration in planning and implementing a course that integrated physics and the Finnish language. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews were examined using qualitative content analysis, first, to discover what kind of space for knowledge construction student teachers designed for learners and, second, to identify the characteristics of their collaboration in developing a new cross-disciplinary pedagogical practice. Monikielisyys on nykyisin arkipäivää monissa kouluissa. Myös Suomen kouluissa erikielisten oppilaiden määrä on kasvanut ja sen odotetaan yhä kasvavan tulevaisuudessa. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme, miten koulut voivat positiivisesti huomioida monikielisyyttä arjessaan. Käytämme esimerkkinä Utrechtin kansainvälistä koulua Alankomaissa ja kuvaamme, miten oppilaiden monipuoliset kielirepertuaarit nähdään siellä voimavarana ja miten niitä hyödynnetään tarkoituksenmukaisesti opetuksessa. This article examines L1 literacy practices and use of L1 from the perspective of students and teachers with migrant background. We focus particularly on the meaning making of literacy practices and use of L1 in both in-school and out-of-school contexts. The data consist of 13 teacher interviews and 10 student interviews and applied tasks completed by the students studying in a comprehensive school. The thesis explores bilingual adolescents’ language use, linguistic resources, and language practices in interaction at three junior high schools in Haparanda, a Swedish town on the country’s northeastern border with Finland. A comparison is also made with interaction among bilingual adolescents at two Sweden-Finnish junior high schools in Stockholm and at one Swedish-speaking junior high school in Helsinki.
