Bene : Adverb or noun?

International audience; When Italian bene ‘good / well’ occurs with fare ‘do / make’, several constructs with remarkably different argument frames are involved. This paper deals with three of them: (a) Il latte fa bene ai bambini ‘Milk is good for children’; (b) Fa bene il suo lavoro ‘She does her job well’, and (c) Faresti bene a non dire niente ‘You would do well to say nothing about it’. We discuss dictionary discrepancies concerning the lexical category of 'bene' in (a), which we take to be a noun predicate, and draw a distinction between the adverbial uses in (b) and (c).

Inscription sur tige de plomb trouvée à Reims

Inscription on a lead rod found in Reims. The archaeological description of the find informs us that it was found in Reims, boulevard de la Paix, in 2001, behind a Gaulish wall, near dwellings of the Ist century AD. This lead rod has been cast under this form, possibly for the use of metal workers. The two names inscribed on the rod (GNATOS TASGEDO) are equivalent to a trade mark. These two names however probably refer to two different persons, for one has a Gaulish ending and the other, a Latin one.

The role of language skills in learning to read : The case of bilingualism in French overseas departments

ABSTRACTThis study aims to explain how the practice of two languages (French and Creole) in French overseas departments affects the first educational competencies acquired by children. The students’ performance in both languages was investigated at the beginning of kindergarten, and their reading capacities were measured at the end of Grade 1. The data analysis shows that the practice of Creole has no negative impact on success at reading in French. Furthermore, it appears that the students who performed the best in reading were those who were either more competent in French than in Creole, or those who were equally competent in both languages, according to their assessed reading competence…

Tradicionalment s'ha pensat que la traducció com a eina a l'aula de llengües estrangeres va quedar desaconsellada en el mètode directe. Així, des de llavors, molts docents han defensat la idea que la traducció és un recurs nociu per ensenyar idiomes, encara que, segons Cook (2010), no hi ha evidències que ho hagin provat científicament. Abans de continuar acceptant aquesta creença heretada del mètode directe, pensem que és necessari revaluar si la traducció va ser rebutjada per tots els seus exponents i si va ser realment possible excloure-la de les aules del moment.
