Clustering of textual networks: analysing open-ended questions in text data of the perception of minerality in wine

2014

International audience; Open-ended questions are commonly used in sensory analyses, and are usually dealt with by correspondence analysis (CA) of the term-respondent matrix. CA is apt in detecting strong associations between terms and groups of respondents, but less so when the questions are interpreted differently among respondents and, thus, seem to open a polysemic space for the answers. Also, CA offers little flexibility in filtering out irrelevant textual structure, or in controlling the relative contribution of rare versus frequent terms in the overall analysis. This contribution presents methodological extensions of CA together with application on a survey of 1900 responses bearing u…

2015

In a postcolonial context, this research looks into the itineraries of French expatriates, from a former colonial empire, in Malaysia, a former British colony. The autobiographical discourses of the French expatriates, blogs, research writings and research interviews, are analyzed in terms of the articulation between individual experiences and collective representations, interrogating how experiencing alterity, as well as writing or speaking about it, participates in the construction of identities. The discourse analysis is dialogical and takes in consideration a larger field of discourses: the centuries‐long orientalist discourse as theorized by Bill Ashcroft, Tzvetan Todorov or Edward Sai…

A pragmatic study of nonsense, from Lewis Carroll to the Monty Python

2010

This dissertation consists in a study of verbal exchanges in nonsense literature, from the last quarter of the nineteenth century and one of the two fathers of the genre, Lewis Carroll, to the last quarter of the twentieth century and his glorious heirs, the Monty Python. The corpus is taken from the whole of English-speaking nonsense literature, be it English (Lewis Carroll, the Monty Python, N.F. Simpson), Canadian (Stephen Leacock), or American (Robert Benchley, Donald Ogden Stewart, Joseph Heller and the Marx Brothers). As the title indicates, the study of verbal exchanges will rely on pragmatic analysis, pragmatics being the study of how language works as a practice, in social context.…

2014

The communication of taste is a critical point to the professional of sensory analysis and to the food industry, but also to the consumers themselves, who sometimes need a tool to help them to make their food choices. Still, the taste is complex to study, as it is the product of the three dimensions sensory/sensitive/symbolic, which is the reason why its communication is difficult to set up. The sensitive dimension is a semiotic concept based on the human dimension of perception (emotion, memory, social…), and which study its influence on the construction of meaning in a communication context. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to embrace the global nature of taste, as it refers to soci…
