Determination of consensus kQ values for megavoltage photon beams for the update of IAEA TRS-398
2020
The IAEA is currently coordinating a multi-year project to update the TRS-398 Code of Practice for the dosimetry of external beam radiotherapy based on standards of absorbed dose to water. One major aspect of the project is the determination of new beam quality correction factors, kQ, for megavoltage photon beams consistent with developments in radiotherapy dosimetry and technology since the publication of TRS-398 in 2000. Specifically, all values must be based on, or consistent with, the key data of ICRU Report 90. Data sets obtained from Monte Carlo (MC) calculations by advanced users and measurements at primary standards laboratories have been compiled for 23 cylindrical ionization chamb…
The infrared thermography control of the laser welding of amorphous polymers
2008
In laser welding technique, a real-time control of temperature distribution inside the irradiated materials is essential when attempting to optimize the process. For all laser welding methods that operate by the transmission principle, the difficulty of recording the developed temperature at the interface derives from the fact that materials to be welded are in contact throughout the entire process. In the present study, in order to overcome this issue, a contact-free method such the infrared thermography is used for surface temperature measurement. Corroborating this data with a numerical simulation of the temperature field evolution inside the components, an assessment of optimal process …
Comparison of laser and power bleaching techniques in tooth color change
2017
BACKGROUND Laser-assisted bleaching uses laser beam to accelerate release of free radicals within the bleaching gel to decrease time of whitening procedure. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of power bleaching using Opalescence Xtra Boost® and laser bleaching technique using LaserSmile gel and diode laser as an activator in their tooth whitening capacity. MATERIAL AND METHODS Student t test showed that the laser bleaching group significantly outperformed the power bleaching group in changing ∆E (p=0.977). RESULTS Similarly, while comparing the groups in changing ∆L, the laser bleaching group indicated significantly superior results (p=0.953). Statistical data from student t …
On the mechanisms involved in the tensile strength of a dissimilar Ti6Al4V/316L laser welded assembly
2021
International audience; The aim of the present work is to analyze the thermomechanical behavior of dissimilar laser seams by means of FE modeling. The case of a Ti6Al4V/316L assembly with vanadium insert was considered. Effective mechanical properties of the main materials and cords were first estimated from NHT measurements. Modeling of the double pass laser welding process was performed first by considering shrinking of the two weld seams during manufacturing, to get the residual stress state in the welded assembly. Modeling of the tensile test was performed in a second step to study the assembly behavior during loading. In these modeling results, the mesh was the cross-section of the mic…
Effect of gaseous impurities and the laser optics
2004
The impurities into the volume of a material appear while the elaboration process of the considered material. If a material is non-homogenous, even if we machine this material by means of a classical technology we could remark some differences in the machining process like cutting, drilling a.s.o. even in the process of welding. The impurities may be gaseous or solid. Each kind of impurity has another effect for the classical tool, or for a non-traditional tool i.e. a kind of concentrated energy. Each kind of medium has another reaction versus laser beam, because each medium has other physical characteristics. The modifications of characteristics require modifications of photon beam paramet…
Modelling of laser beam texturing process: experimental and numerical approaches
2007
The aim of this work is to reache a better control of the laser beam surface texturing process on three materials: 304L, TA6V and AA6056 alloys. For this purpose, two complementary methods, experimental and numerical modelling, have been used. As a result of the experimental design approach, it was observed that the laser surface texturing process of 304L and TA6V alloys is strongly influenced by the pulse energy and frequency. In order to obtain a surface roughness Sa < 5 µm for the highest possible productivity it is necessary to work with an energy of 5 mJ and a frequency ranging between 10 and 12 kHz. Unfortunately, for aluminium alloy AA6056, it is necessary to make a choice between ha…
Real time measurement of long parabolic optical similaritons
2008
International audience; Long optical similaritons using a Raman fibre amplifier are generated. These pulses, with a highly parabolic profile, are monitored in real time on a high speed oscilloscope. Tunability of both the temporal and spectral widths of the pulses is then investigated.
Comparison between 2 Different Composite Nd3+:YVO4 Crystals in a Fibre Coupled Diode Pumped Laser
2008
International audience; We detail the performances of two composite Nd3+YVO4crystals, realised with two different sticking techniques. We tested them inside a fibre coupled diode end pumped laser.
Multidimensional shaping of spatiotemporal waves in multimode nonlinear fibers
2019
Recent experiments have shown that nonlinear wave propagation in multimode optical fibers leads to complex spatio-temporal phenomena. In this talk, we introduce new approaches for the control and optimization of nonlinear beam reshaping in the spatial, temporal and spectral dimensions. The first approach applies to spatial beam self-cleaning the technique of transverse wavefront shaping, which permits to launch an optimized input mode combination, that results in the stable generation of a whole nonlinear mode alphabet at the fiber output. The second approach introduces a longitudinal tapering of the core diameter of multimode active and passive fibers, which permits to generate ultra-wideb…
Micron-precision in cleaving glass using ultrafast bessel beams with engineered transverse beam shapes
2017
International audience; Ultrafast lasers in association to beam shaping have shown to be excellent candidates for transparent material processing. Non-diffractive solutions such as Bessel beams allows for precise energy deposition since they are robust to undesired non-linear effects and as they do not distort along the propagation. This offers important opportunities in laser-assisted cleaving, i.e. mechanical medium separation after single-pass laser illumination. Here we break the Bessel beam cylindrical symmetry using a novel anisotropic and non-diffractive solutions to investigate both lateral intensity contributions on material response and induced processing effect for non-cylindrica…
