Rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing on blood cultures using MALDI-TOF MS

2018

International audience; Antibiotic resistance is a major public health problem requiring the early optimization of antibiotic prescriptions. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been shown to accurately identify bacteria from positive blood culture. Here, we developed a rapid detection of Escherichia coli resistance to amoxicillin (AMX) and cefotaxime (CTX) from positive blood culture based on MALDI-TOF MS. Potential sparing of broad-spectrum antibiotics was also evaluated. We tested 103 E. coli-positive blood cultures. Blood cultures were subculture 1-hour in antibiotic-free rich liquid media before further incubation with and with…

"Downward steps technique" with CO2 ultrapulsed laser for the treatment of rhinophyma: our protocol.

2013

Abstract BACKGROUND: The rhinophyma is an important soft-tissue hypertrophy of the nose. In literature a wide range of surgical approaches to rhinophyma has been described such as dermoabrasion, scalpel shave, cryosurgery, electrocautery, near total excision with skin grafting, and laser excision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors describe their experience with CO(2) ultrapulsed laser in 14 elderly male patients, using their personal approach, the Downward steps technique. With this technique they removed the pathological hypertrophic tissue using a progressive reduction of the laser power during the treatment. They obtained good results from morphological and aesthetic point of view, in a …

Surfactant self-assembling in gas phase: electrospray ionization- and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry of singly charged…

2005

The self-assembling of sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) in gas phase has been investigated by electrospray ionization- and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. Large surfactant clusters with an aggregation number close to that found in apolar media have been observed either as positive or negative ions. Moreover, the marked predominance of singly charged species as well as preliminary theoretical calculations strongly suggest an aggregate structure characterized by an internal hydrophilic core hosting the extra charge surrounded by an apolar shell constituted by the surfactant alkyl chains. This structure is similar to that of the more familiar revers…

Photonic-crystal silicon-nanocluster light-emitting device

2006

We report on enhanced light extraction from a light-emitting device based on amorphous silicon nanoclusters, suitable for very-large-scale integration, and operating at room temperature. Standard low-cost optical lithography is employed to fabricate a two-dimensional photonic crystal onto the device. We measured a vertical emission with the extracted radiation enhanced by over a factor of 4, without the aid of any buried reflector. These achievements demonstrate that a cost-effective exploitation of photonic crystals is indeed within the reach of semiconductor industry and open the way to a new generation of nanostructured silicon devices in which photonic and electronic functions are integ…

Processing of amorphous Si by pulsed laser irradiation at different wavelengths

2012

Amorphous Si thin films deposited on thermally oxidized Si wafers have been processed by the 2 nd and 3 rd harmonics of Nd:YAG laser. Surface modification of amorphous silicon layers have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy before and after chemical etching of processed silicon films. The super-lateral crystal growth regime was achieved with laser fluence of 280 mJ/cm 2 for the 2 nd harmonics and 155 mJ/cm 2 for the 3 rd harmonics. The grain size in polycrystalline Si samples prepared by successive crystallization in the lateral growth regime is about 0.5 - 1 μm.

High-efficiency silicon-compatible photodetectors based on Ge quantum dots

2011

We report on high responsivity, broadband metal/insulator/semiconductor photodetectors with amorphous Ge quantum dots (a-Ge QDs) as the active absorbers embedded in a silicon dioxide matrix. Spectral responsivities between 1-4 A/W are achieved in the 500-900 nm wavelength range with internal quantum efficiencies (IQEs) as high as ∼700%. We investigate the role of a-Ge QDs in the photocurrent generation and explain the high IQE as a result of transport mechanisms via photoexcited QDs. These results suggest that a-Ge QDs are promising for high-performance integrated optoelectronic devices that are fully compatible with silicon technology in terms of fabrication and thermal budget. © 2011 Amer…

Solution processable piperazine and triphenyl moiety containing non-symmetric bis-styryl-DWK type molecular glasses with light-emitting and amplified…

2018

A series of 2,6-bis-styryl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene fragment containing glassy organic compounds with chemically stable bonding of amorphous phase promoting bulky triphenyl moieties through piperazine structural fragment (DWK-T dyes) in a form of 2-(5,5,5-triphenylpentyl)piperazin-1-yl)styryl)-substituent have been synthesized and investigated as the potential gain medium component for organic solid state laser applications. Physical properties of the dyes vary and are mostly depending from the other styryl-substituent attached to the 4H-pyran-4-ylidene backbone fragment in 6-position. Thermal stability of synthesized dyes is above 312°C with the glass transitions from 97°C to 109°C. Obtained nea…

Gain lifetime measurement of a Ni-like Ag soft X-ray laser

2012

International audience; Experimental results of a two-stage Ni-like Ag soft X-ray laser operated in a seed-amplifier configuration are presented. Both targets were pumped applying the double-pulse grazing incidence technique with intrinsic travelling wave excitation. The injection of the seed X-ray laser into the amplifier target was realized by a spherical mirror. The results show amplification of the seed X-ray laser and allow for a direct measurement of the gain lifetime. The experimental configuration is suitable for providing valuable input for computational simulations. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Glass-forming derivatives of 2-cyano-2-(4H-pyran-4-ylidene) acetate for light-amplification systems

2019

Abstract A series of 2-cyano-2-(4H-pyran-4-ylidene) acetate derivatives with triphenyl and 9H-carbazole moieties were synthesized and investigated, mostly for potential applications in organic solid state lasers. Synthesized compounds show remarkable amorphous film formation ability, tunable thermal properties (thermal stability varies from 190 °C to 387 °C and glass transition temperature from 94 °C up to 141 °C) with light absorption from 400 nm to 600 nm and photoluminescence from 600 nm up to 800 nm. Dyes with incorporated mono-styryl- electron donating fragment (KTB, KTBC and KTB3K) showed higher photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) (from 16% up to 23%), significantly lower amplified…
