Touring the magical North : Borealism and the indigenous Sámi in contemporary English-language children’s fantasy literature

Discourses of exotic Lapland with its indigenous inhabitants, the Sámi, are widely circulated in the tourist industry and also surface in contemporary English-language children’s fantasy fiction. In contrast to the ‘self-orientalism’ of discourses of tourism, where places and people are represented as exotic to a tourist gaze, the portrayals of the North and its inhabitants gain different symbolic meanings in fictional texts produced by outsiders who rely on earlier texts – myths, fairy tales and anthropological accounts – rather than on their own lived experience of the North or indigeneity. Does reading a lot lead to better reading skills, or does reading a lot follow from high initial reading skills? The authors present a longitudinal study of how much children choose to read and how well they decode and comprehend texts. This is the first study to examine the codevelopment of print exposure with both fluency and comprehension throughout childhood using autocorrelations. Print exposure was operationalized as children’s amount of independent reading for pleasure. Two hundred children were followed from age 5 to age 15. Tutkimus tarkastelee lastenkirjojen kuvahahmoja esikouluikäisten lasten kertomana. Tutkimus selvittää, mitä esikouluikäiset lapset kertovat käsityksistään muumista, Peppi Pitkätossusta sekä Lumikista ja seitsemästä kääpiöstä ja kyseisten hahmojen erilaisista versioista. Lastenkirjat ovat osa lapsuutta ja aikuisten lapsille tuottamaa lastenkulttuuria. Lasten tiedetään yleisesti pitävän kuvista ja katselevan kuvia ennen kirjallisen lukutaidon kehittymistä. Augmented reality (AR) picturebooks combine printed children's literature with augmented reality. This study examines the shared reading of the Finnish AR picturebook Mur, eli karhu (2016) by Kaisa Happonen and Anne Vasko. The main aim of the study is to explore the playful reading experience of three Finnish families with children between the ages of 4 and 6. Three main categories of engagement with the book are discussed in the article: interpretation, negotiation, and play.
