Nanotribological, nanomechanical and interfacial characterization of atomic layer deposited TiO2 on a silicon substrate

2015

Abstract For every coating it is critical that the coatings are sufficiently durable to withstand practical applications and that the films adhere well enough to the substrate. In this paper the nanotribological, nanomechanical and interfacial properties of 15–100 nm thick atomic layer deposited (ALD) TiO 2 coatings deposited at 110–300 °C were studied using a novel combination of nanoscratch and scanning nanowear testing. Thin film wear increased linearly with increasing scanning nanowear load. The film deposited at 300 °C was up to 58±11 %-points more wear-resistant compared to the films deposited at lower temperatures due to higher hardness and crystallinity of the film. Amorphous/nanocr…

Hybrid paper–TiO2 coupled with a Cu2O heterojunction: an efficient photocatalyst under sun-light irradiation

2016

Hybrid paper-TiO2, paper-Cu2O-TiO2 and paper-TiO2-Cu2O photocatalysts were prepared via a non-hydrolytic sol-gel process followed by mild hydrothermal treatment to generate the TiO2 layer, and a reduction process to form the Cu2O nanoparticles. The hybrid photocatalysts have been characterized by Raman, TGA, FE-SEM, UV-Vis and XPS. The immobilized TiO2 was found to form a homogeneous thin layer composed of nanoparticles with a size smaller than 10 nm. The Cu2O nanoparticles with sizes of 30-100 nm were generated either on the top of the TiO2 layer or by reduction of Cu2+ ions. All the prepared hybrid catalysts showed efficient photocatalytic properties for the degradation of toluidine when …

A new approach for actinic defect inspection of EUVL multilayer mask blanks: Standing wave photoemission electron microscopy

2006

Extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) at 13.5 nm is the next generation lithography technique capable of printing sub-50 nm structures. With decreasing feature sizes to be printed, the requirements for the lithography mask also become more stringent in terms of defect sizes and densities that are still acceptable and the development of lithography optics has to go along with the development of new mask defect inspection techniques that are fast and offer high resolution (preferable in the range of the minimum feature size) at the same time. We report on the development and experimental results of a new 'at wavelength' full-field imaging technique for defect inspection of multilayer mask bl…

Thermal atomic layer deposition of AlOxNy thin films for surface passivation of nano-textured flexible silicon

2019

Abstract Aluminum oxynitride (AlOxNy) films with different nitrogen concentration are prepared by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) for flexible nano-textured silicon (NT-Si) surface passivation. The AlOxNy films are shown to exhibit a homogeneous nitrogen-doping profile and the presence of an adequate amount of hydrogen, which is investigated by Time-of-Fight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ToF-ERDA). The effective minority carrier lifetimes are measured after the NT-Si surface passivation; the minimum surface recombination velocity (SRV) of 5 cm-s−1 is achieved with the AlOxNy film in comparison to the Al2O3 and AlN films (SRV of 7–9 cm-s−1). The better SRV with AlOxNy film is due …

Gold Nanowired: A Linear (Au25)n Polymer from Au25 Molecular Clusters

2014

Au25(SR)18 has provided fundamental insights into the properties of clusters protected by monolayers of thiolated ligands (SR). Because of its ultrasmall core, 1 nm, Au25(SR)18 displays molecular behavior. We prepared a Au25 cluster capped by n-butanethiolates (SBu), obtained its structure by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and studied its properties both experimentally and theoretically. Whereas in solution Au25(SBu)18(0) is a paramagnetic molecule, in the crystal it becomes a linear polymer of Au25 clusters connected via single Au-Au bonds and stabilized by proper orientation of clusters and interdigitation of ligands. At low temperature, [Au25(SBu)18(0)]n has a nonmagnetic ground s…

Two multilayered plate models with transverse shear warping functions issued from three dimensional elasticity equations

2014

Abstract A multilayered plate theory which uses transverse shear warping functions is presented. Two methods to obtain the transverse shear warping functions from three-dimensional elasticity equations are proposed. The warping functions are issued from the variations of transverse shear stresses computed at specific points of a simply supported plate. The first method considers an exact 3D solution of the problem. The second method uses the solution provided by the model itself: the transverse shear stresses are computed integrating equilibrium equations. Hence, an iterative process is applied, the model is updated with the new warping functions, and so on. Once the sets of warping functio…

Individual arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes probed with multiple measurement techniques

2020

Arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AD-MWNT), or related MWNTs, exhibit a good quality compared to the more common type of MWNT synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition methods. Yet experimental measurements on these are rather few and typically have not correlated data from different measurement techniques. Here, the authors report Raman spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, conductivity measurements, and force microscopy on single AD-MWNTs. The results demonstrate the high quality of AD-MWNTs and are compatible with the view of them as the best approximation of MWNTs as an assembly of defect-free concentric individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. The au…

2D photonic defect layers in 3D inverted opals on Si platforms

2006

Dielectric spheres synthesised for the fabrication of self-organized photonic crystals such as opals offer large opportunities for the design of novel nanophotonic devices. In this paper, we show a hexagonal superlattice monolayer of dielectric spheres inscribed on a 3D colloidal photonic crystal by e-beam lithography. The crystal is produced by a variation of the vertical drawing deposition method assisted by an acoustic field. The structures were chosen after simulations showed that a hexagonal super-lattice monolayer in air exhibits an even photonic band gap below the light cone if the refractive index of the spheres is higher than 1.93.

Atomic layer deposition of LixTiyOz thin films

2013

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was employed to deposit ternary films of LixTiyOz. The film growth at a deposition temperature of 225 °C was studied using both titanium tetra-isoropoxide (Ti(OiPr)4) and titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as titanium precursors. Lithium tert-butoxide (LiOtBu) was applied as the lithium source and water was used as the oxygen source for all metal precursors. The type of titanium precursor chosen strongly affected film growth: with TiCl4 the resulting LixTiyOz films were highly air-sensitive and the lithium concentration was low, whereas with Ti(OiPr)4 the films were relatively stable in air and with a lithium content which was easily controlled over a wide range. F…
