Two-dimensional dye crystals with controllable optical properties

The structure, molecular ordering and optical properties of single crystals of cyanine dyes grown by adsorption from a water subphase to a positively charged lipid monolayer are discussed. These crystals are one monolayer thick, of uniform dimensions between 10 and 100μm (depending on nucleation conditions) and of rectangular shape. Single crystals were studied by transmission electron diffraction and by polarized absorption and emission spectroscopy. We show that the crystals consist of two rows of densely stacked molecules with two different orientations of the long molecular axes. This leads to two perpendicularly polarized absorption bands. A Bayesian analysis of a queueing system with unlimited service

Abstract A queueing system occurs when “customers” arrive at some facility requiring a certain type of “service” provided by the “servers”. Both the arrival pattern and the service requirements are usually taken to be random. If all the servers are busy when customers arrive, they usually wait in line to get served. Queues possess a number of mathematical challenges and have been mainly approached from a probability point of view, and statistical analysis are very scarce. In this paper we present a Bayesian analysis of a Markovian queue in which customers are immediately served upon arrival, and hence no waiting lines form. Dynamics of Pattern Formation in Biomimetic Systems

This paper is an attempt to conceptualize pattern formation in self-organizing systems and, in particular, to understand how structures, oscillations or waves arise in a steady and homogenous environment, a phenomenon called symmetry breaking. The route followed to develop these ideas was to couple chemical oscillations produced by Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction with confined reaction environments, the latter being an essential requirement for any process of Life. Special focus was placed on systems showing organic or lipidic compartments, which represent more reliable biomimetic matrices.

Putative identification of an amphipathic alpha-helical sequence in hemolysin of Escherichia coli (HlyA) involved in transmembrane pore formation.

Abstract Escherichia coli hemolysin is a pore-forming protein belonging to the RTX toxin family. Cysteine scanning mutagenesis was performed to characterize the putative pore-forming domain of the molecule. A single cysteine residue was introduced at 48 positions within the sequence spanning residues 170–400 and labeled with the polarity-sensitive dye badan. Spectrofluorimetric analyses indicated that several amino acids in this domain are inserted into the lipid bilayer during pore formation. An amphipathic α-helix spanning residues 272–298 was identified that may line the aqueous pore. Three New Triterpene Saponins from Two Species of Carpolobia

Effect of self-assembled surfactant structures on ion transport across the liquid|liquid interface

In this paper, the effect of a coadsorbed polyanion–cationic surfactant system on the transport of tetraethylammonium ion across the water|1,2-dichloroethane interface is studied. It is shown that the change in double-layer structure due to the presence of adsorbed or coadsorbed surfactant can explain the experimental observations, thus concluding that no other effects on ion transfer (e.g., steric hindrance) are relevant under these experimental conditions. Electrostatic Contribution to the Surface Pressure of Charged Monolayers Containing Polyphosphoinositides

Structural and functional studies of lateral heterogeneity in biological membranes have underlined the importance of membrane organization in biological function. Most inquiries have focused on steric determinants of membrane organization, such as headgroup size and acyl-chain saturation. This manuscript reports a combination of theory and experiment that shows significant electrostatic contributions to surface pressures in monolayers of phospholipids where the charge spacing is smaller than the Bjerrum length. Studies of Molecular Orientation and Order in Self-Assembled Semifluorinated n-Alkanethiols:  Single and Dual Component Mixtures

The structure, orientation and morphology of self-assembled monolayers of a semifluorinated n-alkanethiol, F(CF2)8(CH2)11SH (F8H11SH), have been investigated by polarized IR, angular dependent XPS, ToF-SIMS, contact angle, and ellipsometric measurements. The orientation of the all trans hydrocarbon segment was found to be tilted much less from the surface normal than the 30° tilt found for octadecanethiol. This has been attributed to the steric constraints imposed by the larger cross section fluorocarbon helices that subsequently are tilted from the surface normal. Under physiological conditions, multicomponent biological membranes undergo structural changes which help define how the membrane functions. An understanding of biomembrane structure-function relations can be based on knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of pure phospholipid bilayers. Here, we have investigated phase transitions in dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) bilayers. We demonstrated the existence of several phase transitions in DPPC and DOPC mica-supported bilayers by both atomic force microscopy imaging and force measurements.
