Protein-lipid interactions at the air-water interface.

International audience; Protein−lipid interactions play an important role in a variety of fields, for example in pharmaceutical research, biosensing, or food science. However, the underlying fundamental processes that govern the interplay of lipids and proteins are often very complex and are therefore studied using model systems. Here, Langmuir monolayers were used to probe the interaction of a model protein with lipid films at the air−water interface. The protein β-lactoglobulin (βlg) is the major component in bovine milk serum, where it coexists with the milk fat globular membrane. Nous avons etudie l'effet de revetements de chromine et d'alumine sur le comportement de l'acier inoxydable F17Ti. Les films ont ete formes a la surface de l'alliage par pyrolyse de la vapeur d'un precurseur organometallique (MOCVD). Cette technique permet egalement de preparer des oxydes d'elements de terres rares. Ceci nous a conduit a envisager la formation de couches barrieres dopees par un element actif, soit par depots successifs, soit par codeposition de chromine ou d'alumine et d'un oxyde de terre rare, suivi d'un traitement de recuit d'homogeneisation. AES and CEMS analysis of the formation of layers on Si steel under thermal treatment in a flux of H2/water vapour

The near surface diffusion and reaction processes in iron-silicon steel (3.1 wt.%Si) during 10 min decarburization in water vapour/hydrogen have been studied. The decarburization temperature has been varied between 506 and 714°C for the fixed partial pressure ratio pH2O/pH2=0.017. An outer layer of SiO2 forms on the surface with its thickness increasing with temperature. From 600°C upwards, the decarburization process is hindered and a cementite layer is formed below the SiO2 layer. The formation of fayalite at the surface has been studied at a fixed decarburization temperature with pH2O/pH2 ranging from 0.017 to 0.49. Anomalous surface diffusion of protons on lipid membranes.

AbstractThe cellular energy machinery depends on the presence and properties of protons at or in the vicinity of lipid membranes. To asses the energetics and mobility of a proton near a membrane, we simulated an excess proton near a solvated DMPC bilayer at 323 K, using a recently developed method to include the Grotthuss proton shuttling mechanism in classical molecular dynamics simulations. We obtained a proton surface affinity of −13.0 ± 0.5 kJ mol−1. The proton interacted strongly with both lipid headgroup and linker carbonyl oxygens. Competition between surface reaction and diffusion of gold deposited onto ZrTe3

Abstract Surface reaction and diffusion of gold, deposited onto the (0 0 1) ZrTe 3 van der Waals (vdW) surface, is studied by transmission electron and scanning tunneling microscopy. It is shown that both processes compete at temperatures as low as room temperature. In case of diffusion the deposited gold mostly disappears from the surface and intercalates into the vdW gaps of the substrate. Residual unreacted gold agglomerates are rather mobile and are often displaced by the scanning tip along the [1 0 0] direction of the substrate. Pump currents generated by the purified Na+K+-ATPase from kidney on black lipid membranes.

The transport activity of purified Na+K+-ATPase was investigated by measuring the electrical pump current induced on black lipid membranes. Discs containing purified Na+K+-ATPase from pig kidney were attached to planar lipid bilayers in a sandwich-like structure. After the addition of only microM concentrations of an inactive photolabile ATP derivative [P3-1-(2-nitro)phenylethyladenosine 5'-triphosphate, caged ATP] ATP was released after illumination with u.v.-light, which led to a transient current in the system. A number of energy balance models of variable complexity that use remotely sensed boundary conditions for producing spatially distributed maps of surface fluxes have been proposed. Validation typically involves comparing model output to flux tower observations at a handful of sites, and hence there is no way of evaluating the reliability of model output for the remaining pixels comprising a scene. Less than thirty years after the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect was described, GMR sensors are the preferred choice in many applications demanding the measurement of low magnetic fields in small volumes. This rapid deployment from theoretical basis to market and state-of-the-art applications can be explained by the combination of excellent inherent properties with the feasibility of fabrication, allowing the real integration with many other standard technologies.
