Outcomes of Patients With Advanced NSCLC From the Intergroupe Francophone de Cancérologie Thoracique Biomarkers France Study by KRAS Mutation Subtypes

Abstract Introduction KRAS mutations are detected in 20% to 30% of NSCLC. However, KRAS mutation subtypes may differently influence the outcome of patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods In the Biomarkers France study, 4894 KRAS mutations (26.2%) were detected in 4634 patients from the 17,664 enrolled patients with NSCLC. Survival and treatment data on noncurative stage III to IV NSCLC were available for 901 patients. First- and second-line treatment effects on progression-free survival and overall survival were analyzed according to the KRAS mutations subtype. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar las principales aportaciones de la Realidad Virtual (RV) en el tratamiento psicologico con pacientes oncologicos, y describir un programa de intervencion que utiliza esta tecnologia para promover bienestar emocional en pacientes hospitalizados. BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumour in childhood. The "two hit" theory, formulated by Knudson in 1971 to explain the variegated clinical expression of the disease, led to the discovery of the so called tumour suppressor genes and the identification of the Rb1 as the prototype of such genes. Mutations of the Rb1 gene are now commonly believed to be the "cause" retinoblastoma, although epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidences argue against it. Morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma: A risk analysis

Abstract Background The study was aimed to identify pre- and intraoperative risk factors that potentially influence morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma with particular emphasis on the predominant tumor types. Patients and methods Between September 1985 and March 2004, 424 patients underwent esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma. Of these, 186 (43.9%) patients had a transhiatal, and 231 (54.5%) patients underwent a transthoracic procedure with two-field lymphadenectomy. Optimizing Sequential Systemic Therapies for Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Decision Analysis

Background: An optimal sequential systemic therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been discovered. We developed a decision model based on available clinical trials to identify an optimal risk/benefit strategy for sequences of novel systemic agents. Glutathione (L-γ-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine; GSH) in cancer cells is particularly relevant in the regulation of carcinogenic mechanisms; sensitivity against cytotoxic drugs, ionizing radiations, and some cytokines; DNA synthesis; and cell proliferation and death. The intracellular thiol redox state (controlled by GSH) is one of the endogenous effectors involved in regulating the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex and, in consequence, thiol oxidation can be a causal factor in the mitochondrion-based mechanism that leads to cell death. Los objetivos del estudio fueron: 1) analizar la estructura factorial de la escala CAEPO mediante análisis factorial exploratorio y confirmatorio; 2) estimar la consistencia interna de los factores; 3) describir la distribución de los factores; 4) analizar las diferencias de medias de las estrategias de afrontamiento entre hombres y mujeres.
