The Affective Geography of Paris in the 19th Century Romanian Novel: Between Admiration and Aversion

Based on “The Emotions of London”, a research project initiated at the Stanford Literary Lab, my article focuses on two relevant issues. First of all, I aim to demonstrate, as the “geography of emotions” experiment has already proved, that distant reading approaches and big data interpretation do not necessarily have to replace traditional methods of analysis. In other words, by using a corpus of 157 texts, I intend to outline the affective image of Paris as presented in the nineteenth century Romanian novel. Resum: L’obra del poeta alacantí del segle XVI Josep Gosalbes de Cunedo ha passat a l’oblit. Alguns aspectes de la seua vida i obra mereixen atenció, com a mínim, per haver tractat temes propis de la seua terra. Alguns dels seus poemes tracten l’antiga Governació d’Oriola, al sud del regne de València, i celebren la creació del bisbat d’Oriola, motiu pel qual l’autor descriu el territori amb gust renaixentista. Resumen: En los primitivos documentos romances el posesivo solo aparece antepuesto al sustantivo (“(el) nuestro padre”). La posposicion (“padre nuestro”) se empieza a registrar en el siglo XIII en aragones y en dialecto navarro. Considerando principalmente la documentacion de esta segunda variedad, el presente trabajo tiene como objetivo determinar el modo en que el posesivo adquirio la capacidad de aparecer pospuesto. Este cambio se vio impulsado por factores de naturaleza estructural. Resumen: De entre la galeria de personajes interesantes que nos ofrece el convento dominicano de Santa Catalina virgen y martir de Barcelona en el siglo XVIII destaca fray Josep Mercader (profesion 1720-1779). Un apartado importante aunque «intimo» de su obra lo constituyen las once breves exhortaciones que entre los anos 1740-1745 dirigio a las monjas dominicas del monasterio barcelones de Montesion con ocasion de las ceremonias de recepcion y profesion. En estos 20 folios podemos encontrar el discurso que un dominico cualificado dirigio a las monjas de clausura de su orden en dos momentos tan significativos de su trayectoria religiosa. Producing social mobility. Class and Travel in the Romanian Novel 1901-1932

The present article addresses the Romanian novelistic production between 1901 and 1932 in the attempt of identifying a series of patterns regarding the protagonists’ social mobility. Starting with the most mentioned destinations throughout the novels, I analyse how and why the different social classes travel and try to determine the landmarks between which they dispute their physical presence, on the one hand, and their aspirations, on the other. Combining critical perspectivation and personal account, I hope to offer a retrospective on my experience with the thought of Antonio Candido and a contribution to what we could consider his legacy. First I talk about my translation of a selection of his essays to German for an anthology published in 2005, about the translator’s readings and reflections, which serve as a starting point for rethinking some fundamental issues of Candido’s thought, such as the critical task of teaching and studying literature, also the question of literature’s social (ir)relevance in our days, as analyzed in the famous essay “O direito a literatura” (“The right to literature”, 1988).
Translation and Bilingualism in Monica Ali’s and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Marginalized Identities

This study, drawing upon contemporary theories in the field of migration, postcolonialism, and translation, offers an analysis of literary works by Monica Ali (of Bangladeshi origins) and Jhumpa Lahiri (of Bengali Indian parents). Ali and Lahiri epitomize second-generation immigrant literature, play with the linguistic concept of translating and interpreting as forms of hybrid connections, and are significant examples of how a text may become a space where multi-faceted identities co-habit in a process of deconstructing and reconstructing their own sense of emplacement in non-native places.
