Headmaster-teacher relationship in leading school

2013

The study explored principal-teacher relationships in four Junior High schools in the Sekyere South District of Ashanti in Ghana. One of the things that government, policy-makers and educators in Ghana rarely or never discuss is the value and significance of human connections - the relationships in schools. The focus of the study was to uncover the significance of developing and sustaining a high-quality relationship between principals and teachers for effective leadership and performance. Again, the study projects a broader conception of leadership, one that shifts away from the traditional thinking approach where the figure-head is seen as ultimately responsible for the school outcomes, t…

Dharmic Education - A Panacea for Social Evils in Emerging Economies

2014

Education is a tool of social change. The perceptions of people about the goals of education largely define the pattern of education structure. If the values of the society revolve around materialistic pursuits alone, it naturally promotes unbridled race for money. The products of that education system orient towards materialistic pursuits and the lofty ideals like Corporate Social Responsibility and business ethics that dominate the current managerial thought get lip sympathy in their hands. Realizing the need of ethical values in organizations, many universities of the West and certain prime institutions in India (ex- IIM, Bangalore) have introduced spiritual education in the course curri…

(De)Stigmatization of Political Leadership : The Case of a Right-Wing Populist Presidential Candidate in the Finnish Media

2020

In this article, we examine the discursive practices of (de)stigmatizing right-wing populist party leaders. We draw on a recent example from Finland by examining how the female presidential candidate of a right-wing populist party was portrayed in the Finnish media during the 2018 presidential campaign season. We examine the stigmatization by the press media and the stigma-management tactics used by the presidential candidate to resist stigmatization. The media representation of the right-wing party leader is highly tensioned, and the media positions her political leadership within the duality of charisma and stigma. In our analysis, we extend earlier literature by unveiling the emotional t…

Antecedent variables of innovation behaviors in organizations: Differences between men and women

2016

Abstract Introduction Relevance of innovation behaviors for organizational success led to study its main individual, job-related and organizational antecedents. Moreover, research on differences in innovation between men and women showed inconclusive results. Ambidexterity (Bledow, Frese, Anderson, Erez, & Farr, 2009) and Zhou and Hoever (2014) call for combining contextual and personal characteristics in innovation research suggest that pathways and variables leading to innovation between men and women could be different. Objective(s) This study aims to analyze if men and women differ in the main antecedents for innovative behaviors. Thus, a moderating effect of gender on the relationship …

Supervisor leadership style, employee regulatory focus, and leadership performance: A perspectivism approach

2019

[EN] Drawing on regulatory focus theory, this research proposes that transformational leadership performance depends on followers' circumstances. The analysis of 125 people from two Spanish service firms reveals that, apart from transformational leadership, the presence of academic education, intrinsic job satisfaction and high customer contact, and the absence of family responsibilities, are core conditions for the presence of high leadership performance. The first contribution of this study is the direct inference of follower's regulatory focus from the observation of individuals' circumstances. The second contribution is that leaders should consider followers' circumstances to adopt a su…

Co-Development of Personality and Friendships Across the Lifespan

2016

Abstract. This article examines changes in the co-development of personality characteristics and friendships across the lifespan. We address how personality traits shape friendship development (i.e., selection effects) and how friendships shape personality traits (i.e., socialization effects). By integrating separate empirical studies, we look at how selection and socialization effects change across the lifespan. A review of longitudinal research supports our hypothesis that selection effects on friendships intensify during adolescence, peak in young adulthood, and diminish throughout middle and late adulthood. Socialization effects through friendships seem to be moderately sized during ado…

Leadership and spirituality in business and public administration: a cross-cultural empirical study comparing the USA and France

2013

National audience; In this discussion we build on previous work on the role of ethics in shaping the behaviour of leaders in business and public administration to investigate the relationship between leadership spirituality, the environment springing from such leadership, and the resulting followers’ attributions of leader effectiveness in the USA and France. Survey data collected from the USA and France were used to test a composite construct of spiritual leadership including (a) accountability, (b) rationality, and (c) honesty. The results of hypothesis tested suggest followers’ attributions of leaders’ positive outcomes increase in proportion with increases in leader’s spirituality. Thes…
