The present paper reports on a qualitative study investigating how Iranian learners of English as a foreign language understand culture and the extent to which this understanding meets the needs of efficient intercultural communication. In order to gather data, in-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with eight participants. The interviews were designed and thematically analyzed using Baker’s (2011) model of intercultural awareness. Interpreting and managing a monolingual norm in an English-speaking class in Finland: When first and second graders contest the norm

This study explores the stances that multilingual learners adopt in the face of a monolingual, “English-only” norm in a primary English medium class in Finland. I examine classroom interaction focusing on three students and the ways in which they reinterpret, reformulate, and contest this norm. This research is informed by the perspective of language socialization and draws on methods of microethnographic discourse analysis. Kirjallisuuden hyödyntäminen kieltenopetuksessa Suomessa on ollut suhteellisen vähäistä. Kirjallisuuden käyttö kielten opetuksessa tarjoaa kuitenkin enemmän hyötyjä kuin haasteita. Kielen oppimisen lisäksi kirjallisuuden käytöllä voidaan edistää laajempia opetussuunnitelman mukaisia tavoitteita esimerkiksi ihmisenä kasvua. This study examines interpersonality and audience awareness of initial greetings and leave-taking formulae in 1,041 e-mails (523 Finnish, 518 Swedish) written by Finnish (n = 222) and Swedish (n = 174) language learners in basic education, secondary education and at university level in Finland. The results reveal that there are certain communicative differences between the two groups. The e-mails contain different levels of formality: Swedish learners use more initial greetings and their messages are slightly more coherent than those of Finnish learners. This paper examines learner beliefs from a dialogical point of view. Drawing on the writings of the Bakhtin circle, it sees beliefs as shared and recycled viewpoints that are multivoiced: they echo the voices of others as well as the voice of the speaker. A longitudinal interview study was conducted among a group of young Finnish learners of English. The analysis of the data focused on the voicework present in the learners’ answers: how they, on the one hand, echoed or even repeated the voices of authority, and, on the other hand, brought forward their own insights.
