An Intra-Subject Approach Based on the Application of HMM to Predict Concentration in Educational Contexts from Nonintrusive Physiological Signals in…

2021

Previous research has proven the strong influence of emotions on student engagement and motivation. Therefore, emotion recognition is becoming very relevant in educational scenarios, but there is no standard method for predicting students’ affects. However, physiological signals have been widely used in educational contexts. Some physiological signals have shown a high accuracy in detecting emotions because they reflect spontaneous affect-related information, which is fresh and does not require additional control or interpretation. Most proposed works use measuring equipment for which applicability in real-world scenarios is limited because of its high cost and intrusiveness. To tackle this…

Emotions and Autonomy in Foreign Language Learning at University

2018

This article explores the role of emotions in foreign language learning at university level. Drawing on the recent literature regarding the affective dimension in language learning, it illustrates the ways in which students experience emotions in foreign language learning. Particular emphasis is given to the way in which students’ emotions, both positive and negative, emerge and change during their learning process. The article presents a study conducted among university students learning English in a co-directed and autonomy-inspired environment. Following a qualitative approach, students’ emotional expression was investigated, by means of individual advising sessions …

Learner-Centered Teaching and Teaching Statistics in Social Sciences

2018

Analysing Lexical Density and Lexical Diversity in University Students’ Written Discourse

2015

Abstract This study analyses both lexical density and lexical diversity in the written production of two groups of first year students at the Universitat de Valencia at the beginning and end of one-semester teaching period. These results were compared with those obtained by a third group of students aiming at level C2. Lexical density was tested using Textalyser ( http://textalyser.net ) and lexical frequency used the software RANGE (Nation and Heatly, 1994). Our results prove that the students from both groups at level B1 show the same progression between writing tasks 1 and 3. Furthermore, we can claim that it is possible to obtain a reliable measure of lexical richness which is stable ac…

Leksinių samplaikų sąrašo tikslinimas: bandymas taikyti "Formulex" metodą

2016

Pavyzdžiui, keturžodės anglų kalbos samplaikos at the same time, the same time it ir but at the same yra automatiškai generuojamos kompiuterio programa kaip tekstyne pasikartojančios sekos.

Vironkielisten osallistujien kielitaito Yleisten kielitutkintojen suomen kielen testissä

2021

Vaikka aiemman tutkimuksen valossa suomen kielen taidon tason onkin nähty riippuvan…

Yläkoulun S2-oppilaiden transitiivi-ilmausten käyttö Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen taitotasoilla

2014

Artikkelissa tarkastelen, miten transitiivi-ilmausten kaytto kehittyy ylakouluikaisten suomi toisena kielena -oppilaiden Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen (2003) taitotasoille arvioiduissa kirjoitelmissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittaa, miten nuoret kirjoittajat kayttavat yleista ja monikayttoista ilmaustyyppia, transitiivikonstruktiota, oppijansuomessa ja miten konstruktion toteutumat muuttuvat ja varioivat kielitaidon kehittyessa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu Jyvaskylan yliopiston Cefling-hankkeessa 7.–9.-luokkalaisilta S2-oppilailta keratyista kirjoitelmista, joita analysoin transitiivi-ilmausten taajuuden ja tarkkuuden kannalta. Exploring and Reshaping Learners’ Beliefs About the Usefulness of Corrective Feedback : A Sociocultural Perspective

2016

A number of studies have shown that learners’ beliefs about the usefulness of corrective feedback for improving their L2 (a second or a foreign language) use influences the extent to which learners can utilize that same feedback. It seems, then, that changing some of these beliefs could benefit the L2 learning process. The present article reports on two small-scale studies, both drawing on a sociocultural perspective on the development of beliefs. Changes in learners’ beliefs about corrective feedback were observed both within a period of six months (Case study) and over the course of one research interview (Group study). The studies exemplify how the interplay of one’s own and other’s expe…

An ethnographic study of language socialization and choice in a first and second grade English medium classroom in Finland

2013

In this ethnographic study of language socialization I investigate how a monolingual language norm is instituted, maintained, monitored, resisted, and subverted by participants in a first and second grade English medium class in Finland. In this setting language choice and use are an integral part of membership in this class. This study foregrounds the social implications of managing a monolingual norm by examining student agency, resistance, the achievement of voice, the uptake of a teacher-like discourse, and the practice of repair. The end result is a detailed exploration of peer-talk among students engaged in a variety of activities, highlighting the diverse trajectories of individuals,…
