Can Emotional Competence Be Taught in Higher Education? A Randomized Experimental Study of an Emotional Intelligence Training Program Using a Multime…

2018

Since the introduction of the Bologna Process, the goal of education has been not only to acquire technical skills but also to master other skills, such as teamwork, effective communication skills, time optimization, and the ability to manage one's emotions. The present work describes a program to develop emotional intelligence in higher education, the “Emotional Intelligence Training Program,” with a multimethodological approach that offers the opportunity for university students to develop their emotional intelligence. A total of 192 higher education students participated in this educational experience. Of the participants, 66% were women, and 34% were men; the average age of the sample w…

Promoting youth entrepreneurship and employability through non-formal and informal learning: the Latvia case

2019

This paper presents some results of the research on ‘Adult education resources to reduce youth unemployment’, which is a part of the project ‘Implementation of the European agenda for adult learning’. The research applies a mixed-method approach (quantitative and qualitative data analysis). The purpose of the paper is to identify the most/least-efficient non-formal and informal learning methods, forms, and initiatives to promote youth entrepreneurship and employability in Latvia as well as to show the relationship between the profile of young adults and their opinion on these methods, forms, and initiatives. The findings show that the young adults stressed the importance of cooperation with…

Machine learning approach for predicting Fusarium culmorum and F. proliferatum growth and mycotoxin production in treatments with ethylene-vinyl alco…

2020

Fusarium culmorum and F. proliferatum can grow and produce, respectively, zearalenone (ZEA) and fumonisins (FUM) in different points of the food chain. Application of antifungal chemicals to control these fungi and mycotoxins increases the risk of toxic residues in foods and feeds, and induces fungal resistances. In this study, a new and multidisciplinary approach based on the use of bioactive ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) films containing pure components of essential oils (EOCs) and machine learning (ML) methods is evaluated. Bioactive EVOH-EOC films were made incorporating cinnamaldehyde (CINHO), citral (CIT), isoeugenol (IEG) or linalool (LIN). Several ML methods (neural networ…

Online Metric Learning Methods Using Soft Margins and Least Squares Formulations

2012

Online metric learning using margin maximization has been introduced as a way to learn appropriate dissimilarity measures in an efficient way when information as pairs of examples is given to the learning system in a progressive way. These schemes have several practical advantages with regard to global ones in which a training set needs to be processed. On the other hand, they may suffer from a poor performance depending on the quality of the examples and the particular tuning or other implementation details. This paper formulates several online metric learning alternatives using a passive-aggressive schema. A new formulation of the online problem using least squares is also introduced. The…

Application of a self-learning methodology for the enhancement of the oral communication student outcome in International Business studies

2019

[EN] Effective oral communication is one of the most demanded student outcomes in the labour market, especially for degree students on International Business. Although this outcome is usually evaluated in several subjects along the curriculum, it is barely worked neither inside nor outside the classroom, mainly due to lack of time and to unavailability of proper learning methodologies. The PIMECOE project, an innovation and educational improvement project on this matter, has developed a self-learning methodology on the Effective Oral Communication student outcome, in which auto-diagnosis tests, selflearning tools and peer assessments are conveniently combined to enhance the proficiency leve…

Analysis of the main weaknesses of university students regarding the "effective oral communication" student outcome

2019

[EN] The "Effective oral communication" is one of the most demanded student outcomes in the workplace, since being a good communicator is essential in any field. Inefficient communication can lead to misinterpretations and erroneous conclusions. Therefore, it is a very important student outcome both in the university and in the workplace. The student or graduate must know how to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, appropriately using the necessary resources and adapting to the characteristics of the situation and the audience. However, despite its importance, the disparity in the mastery level of the oral communication student outcome by students makes it difficult to work …

Toward a Model of Workforce Training and Development

2019

In the modern, ever-changing world, both employers and employees are struggling in keeping their competitive advantage. Previous studies have recognised that both formal instruction and informal learning are needed to gain and maintain competence. The famous 70-20-10 model states that only 10 per cent of learning occurs during the formal instruction. The challenge for the organisations is how the formal instruction can and should be provided to employees. In this paper, we constructed a model of Workforce Training and Development (WOTRA), based on the current learning theories, modes, methods, and models. WOTRA can be used by both employers and employees to choose an adequate mix of learnin…

Abstract This paper reports on a teaching innovation using participant-generated drawings. Experienced managers were asked to produce a drawing to illustrate their work from an accounting perspective. The drawings were then used to make the managerial context of the participants the explicit starting point for personalized executive learning. This study is the first in the sphere of accounting education and research to take drawing seriously as a learning method. The results of the experiment show how drawing can be further used as a tool in management education by facilitating the visualization of the managerial contexts participants work within.

2019

[EN] During academic course 2017-2018 the Comunica't methodology was created to help students to self-learn all the skills needed to master the areas of domain of the general student outcome effective oral communication. After two academic years of implementation, the goal of this work is to analyse the degree of contribution of this methodology to development of the "Effective Oral Communication students outcome of students that followed the methodology during the subject Audits of Food Safety and Quality Systems, belonging to the Master in Food Safety and Quality Management. To this end, at the beginning of the subject, students were asked to present a topic related to the subject and eva…

Use the artificial Intelligent in order to Define Skills in Higher Education

2012

In order to increase the level of learning and the rate of success of students the educational policy tries to find a way to increase simultaneously the skills and the knowledge of students especially in higher education. Many approaches have aimed to find the solutions. To reach this goal normally the combination of the various sciences can be more effective than one branch. Then we interested to know how the other science can help us to be close to this goal. The artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of science that has a very wide domain of using. It can help us in various sciences like electronic, animation, medicine, banking, industries, exploitation, robotic, security and even spea…
