La sociedad frente al espejo. Aproximaciones al capital social en Argentina
2015
Discussions of Fatherhood in Male Batterer Treatment Group
2013
The aim of this study was to examine how men who have perpetrated violence toward their partners and participated in batterer group talked about being a father and how they perceived their own fatherhood. The discussion in the group was analyzed qualitatively by using the methods of content analysis. In traditional fatherhood, they talked about avoidant, passiveness, distant, indifference, and authoritative controlling ways of acting. These men also created an image of themselves as active and caring fathers, thus including empathy and nurture in the concept of fatherhood. This new fatherhood was considered an achieved goal and an objective for the men as being a father. Talking about fath…
Early Immersion in Minority Language Contexts: Canada and Finland
2020
This chapter discusses early immersion in a minority language in two bilingual countries, Canada and Finland. In Canada, immersion in the minority language, French, has been implemented since the mid-1960s and Finland introduced immersion in Swedish in the mid-1980s. As the core features of immersion education evolve in tandem with second language education theorizing (particularly as it relates to the interdependence and hybridity between and within languages), so too does the need to revisit the relevance of these core features across different contexts. In this vein, this chapter compares how changing socio-political realities in the two contexts have influenced program development in re…
Motoristen taitojen arviointiin ja niihin liittyvien vaikeuksien tunnistamiseen käytettävän testin kehittäminen 4-6-vuotiaille lapsille
2015
The aim of the research was to develop a motor skills assessment tool for 4-6- year-old children that would include test items for body awareness and basic motor skills, therefore demonstrating the children’s motor performance and related problems and supporting the planning of training programs. First, the contents of nine existing motor skills assessment tools were analyzed. Then, a new pilot test was prepared to test a sample group of 906 children (the mean age 5.1 years, SD 0.41, 48% boys, 52% girls). For the reliability and validity analysis, 55 simultaneous coding by two testers (r=.844 -.992, p=.01), 30 retests (r=.823, p = .01), 38 video analyses (test-retest and inter-tester consta…

Children’s strategic participation in a bilingual Early Childhood Education and Care Centre
2020
This article considers children’s language learning experiences at an early childhood education and care centre (ECEC) in Central Finland. The article draws on data gathered as part of a Master’s thesis study (Holmila, 2019) which looked at the perspectives of staff, parents and children regarding the use of English as part of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology at the ECEC, with a view to future developments of CLIL provision. This article considers what can be learned from the children’s perspectives. Following a brief overview of the advantages of bilingual educational programmes and the educational context for this study, the main section of this article focu…

Colour alone matters : no predator generalization among morphs of an aposematic moth
2018
Local warning colour polymorphism, frequently observed in aposematic organisms, is evolutionarily puzzling. This is because variation in aposematic signals is expected to be selected against due to predators' difficulties associating several signals with a given unprofitable prey. One possible explanation for the existence of such variation is predator generalization, which occurs when predators learn to avoid one form and consequently avoid other sufficiently similar forms, relaxing selection for monomorphic signals. We tested this hypothesis by exposing the three different colour morphs of the aposematic wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, existing in Finland to local wild-caught predato…
